We’re not out of the woods yet, but there is light ahead. Hopefully we can get back to our recognized normal soon. Events are still tenta-tively being scheduled with hopes that we can soon gather in larger groups. So just bear with us - we will get there.PICTURES! PICTURES! PICTURES! I need your pictures for the Roundup. They don’t have to be from a LHR event. They can be single pictures of just your car in a cool location that I can use on the cover (portrait view is preferred but not mandatory) or can use within the issue. Doesn’t need to be from a big, fancy camera - most of the photos in our issues are from phones! You, of course, will get credit for the photo. Wouldn’t it be cool to see YOUR picture on the cover or in an issue? Send them to me - shelley.l.matthews@gmail.com.Make sure you sign up and attend Fiesta Challenge. It’s our biggest charity event of the year. The si-lent auction will feature a beautiful hand-made Porsche quilt from Sherry Sorbera, a Longhorn men’s jacket, a 16x20 picture from the Big Bend drive back in 2019, various Porsche shirts and much more. If you cannot make it but would like to contribute to our designated charities - SA Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, or SaMMinistries - just go on ClubRegistration.net to the Fiesta Challenge page.Want to be featured in the “Meet the Longhorn” column? Just answer the questions below and send to me - shelley.l.matthews@gmail.com - along with a few photos. Be sure to stay until the end for your chance to win some excellent rafe prizes! Team XPEL San Antonio looks forward to hosting the Longhorn PCA!As always, our best laid plans can go awry, and we are faced with new challenges. That certainly is the case with our Longhorn Porsche Club event plans. We have had to deal with a pandemic over the last year and cancel or postpone many of our cherished gatherings. No Fiesta Challenge, no monthly dinner meetings, no Christmas Party…as with most other things in our post-COVID life, we have had to deal with disappointments. This new year has already been an improvement (in spite of a record freeze) with a drive, a rally, a track day, and an autocross. More is to come soon as we have this year’s version of the Fiesta Challenge on April 17 with a concours and a rally for the benet of some local charities that need our support more than ever this year. Meals on Wheels, San Antonio Food Bank and SAMMinistries are all are struggling to meet the demands of this difcult time in our city. We are happy to make them the recipients of the proceeds of the Fiesta Challenge and we hope you will support them in addition to the club gifts. We have more challenges ahead with a requirement for a new autocross venue and the need for some important chairpersons. I encourage you to get involved with the committees that create and execute the fun events for our club. We need an insurance chairperson to interact with PCA National on covered events. We also need help in locating a ve-acre paved venue for Autocross we can rent. If you would like to get more involved, please contact me or any board member and we will nd a place for you to participate.LONGHORN PCA NEEDS YOU! Jud WalfordLH ROUNDUP 7

ZONE 5 NOTES CHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP It has been a busy few months in Zone 5. Most of the regions are getting out and conducting events. Things aren’t back to normal, but folks are being careful, and we haven’t caused any outbreaks that I am aware of! But that is not the case with all car clubs, so I encourage you to continue to be safe and get your COVID shot when you get a chance. There is clearly much demand for events. There has been a lot of participation in region events and PCA National events are lling up in record time. Even this Summer’s Porsche Parade lled all contracted housing in a few hours and the Parade team has been putting folks on a wait list while they try and nd additional housing. Organizing such a large parade while managing COVID restrictions presents other challenges. If are signed up for Parade and you have not seen the 30 March Region Focus on Parade Registration, I encourage you to go online at PCA.org and watch it prior to the Phase II registration on 7 April. Things will be a little different this time, and you need to be prepared. While I encourage you to get out and participate in the national events, including Parade which is practically in our backyard this year, there are a couple of zone-wide events scheduled which you might nd of interest: Boxstoberfest September 10-12 is becoming more of a zone event with more drives and social activities. Run out of Fredericksurg, TX for over 14 years, it is the closest multi-region event and open to all Porsches and PCA members. Stay tuned for additional details.Another popular event in Zone 5 is PCA Palooza. Run out of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, it is a fun event that has been held for over 19 years.I look forward to seeing you out on the road!ChuckZone 5 Rep10 LH ROUNDUP

MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELL Aging................Yes, we all are, but that is not the subject. I’m addressing aging elements in your car. In the past I have discussed tire aging. Our guidelines for track events indicate that no tire can be over 5 years old. You can find the manufacture date on the sidewall preceded by the DOT. Additionally, there can be no cord showing nor a cracking of the sidewall or tread area. Other aging issues would include brake lines and fuel lines. Brake lines are subjected to pres-sure as you apply your brakes and heat over time. They also are affected by weather as they are exposed to the elements. Fuel lines also age and since they are mostly hidden you don’t see them. Good rule of thumb is if your car is 15 years or older you should thoroughly inspect your fuel lines and strongly consider replacing them. Brake lines I would replace much sooner and if I tracked regu-larly, I would consider stainless steel lines. Now we come to the seat belts. They age also from stains, dirt, body oils and the sun. While there is no requirement to replace them, I would point out that seat belts in all race cars amateur and pro have a five-year life even if they were never subjected to stretching due to sudden stops. If you are going to track your car please inspect your seat belts for any wear, stains, etc. and consider replacing them. Should you have to use them you want them to work. There you have it and I did not mention aging drivers even once. That said there is one other item I would strongly suggest you inspect on a fre-quent basis and that is your wheels. Tracking puts significant side loads on wheels and can result is metal cracking. Forged wheels will bend under stress and cast wheels which most of Porsche OEM wheels are will crack The whole idea is to go on the track with a driver healthy and rested and a car inspected to insure it is as safe as possible to protect you …. just in case.Look forward seeing everyone at our next track day having a safe and enjoyable learning experience.LH ROUNDUP 11

Meet the Longhorn....Michael & Sherry SorberaTell us a bit about yourself/family/background. I’m a retired Air Force programmer working at Lackland AFB as a contractor. We were stationed in Germany for 9 years and while there got “Autobahn” fever! We never owned a Porsche while there, just admired them ying by us! We have seven kids, and nine grandkids. My wife Sherry is an amazing quilter! She made the fantastic Porsche quilt that will be auctioned off at this year’s Fiesta Challenge. We got started in the Porsche world with my father giving me a 1987 944. We enjoyed making many family memories with our kids strapped in the back seats. What year did you join PCA? My card says 2001 but we were doing things with the club for a year before we joined. I’ve been a Longhorn Region President, Vice President, Newsletter editor, and Tour Master. What other regions have you belonged to? None, but we’ve done quite a few events over the years with the Hill Country region. We’ve never been to a Porsche Parade, but hopefully will go this year. What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? 2003 Dark Blue Metallic C2 Coupe - current 1993 Amazon Green 968 Coupe - (sold) 2002 Speed-Yellow Boxster (sold) 1987 Slate Grey 944 Turbo (sold) 1987 Guards Red 944 (rst Porsche - sold)What’s your favorite Porsche memory? I have sooooo many! One of the most memorable was leading the combined Porsche/Corvette run out to the twisties near Leakey. What a hoot! I especially like ying through the twistiest in my 1993 968 and a brand new Corvette ZR-1 couldn’t keep up with me!!! Yeah Porsche! What LHR events do you enjoy most? Monthly dinner meetings, drives out in the Hill Country, Christmas dinner, and Fiesta Challenge. What’s your favorite Porsche? My current 2003 911 C2 CoupeWhat non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/participate in? Going to quilt shows and watching my wife Sherry win lots of awards!Michael and Sherry at Porsche-gressive dinner in 2004.Michael and George Haile on Porsche/Corvette drive in 2006Daniel taking pictures! Can Michael’s C2 Coupe keep up with the jet? Yep!!12 LH ROUNDUP

Track Day Photos by Mike Matthews & Amanda JonesTrack Day in February was post-poned to March 27 due to the Texas freeze. And even though it started out as a gloomy, foggy morning all drivers were itching to get out and run the repaved track at Harris Hill Raceway. So, after cars were teched to make sure all met safety require-ments, the driver’s meeting went over the new course and standard safety precautions. Cars lined up in their classes and off they went! Everyone had a great time!OOPS!HarrisHillRacewayLH ROUNDUP 13

Alpha-Numeric SoupThe Basics I have been asked more than once to explain all those Porsche model numbers to the new folks in the club. This is not an all exclusive list of every variaon, but rather a basic guide to the major dierences. I’ll refer to North American model years. A more detailed descripon of each generaon is available on the PCA website. Go to the search box and type “Model Guides:”- note the colon! So, when is a 911 actually a 964, 993 or ve other numbers that I will talk about later?Let’s go back to the beginning for a moment. The Begining Ferdinand Porsche (1875-1951) worked from 1898 through 1930 as an engineer and designer for many automove companies, including ones that would become Mercedes Benz and Auto Union (Audi). On April 25, 1931 he started his own company. “Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Gesellscha mit beschränkter Haung, Konstrukon und Beratung für Motoren- und Fahrzeugbau”, easy for him to say. (Construcon and consulng for engine and vehicle construcon). Their rst successful design was the Type 7 for automaker Wanderer, one of the four rings in the Auto Union/Audi emblem. Then as now, Porsche designed many things besides cars, and works with a variety of compa-nies. An example would be Harley-Davidson collaborang with Porsche Engineering to develop-ing the engine/drivetrain for their V-Rod motorcycle.Type Numbers The Porsche design type numbers connued in a basically chronolog-ical order for many years. Shortly aer World War 2 the rst car to carry the Porsche name, the Type 356, was built in Gmund Austria. Ferdinand Porsche was imprisoned in France at the me. His son, Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche (1909 –1998), beer known as Ferry Porsche was the man behind the 356 project.LH ROUNDUP 23

Page 24

356 Replacement First, a lile 911 history.Porsche started to work on a 356 replacement in 1959 under the name T-7 (Type 754) and it was to be a true four-seater. The front will look familiar, not so the back.Type 901 As the design progressed it was changed to a 2+2 fastback, and it became the Type 901. What happened to the rest of the numbers?Porsche type numbers were in the 800 series in the early 60’s when they decided to share VW’s parts computer system. The only number group available was the 900 series. So, the new car was to be the 901.French automaker Peugeot objected, claiming the rights to three-digit numbers with a zero in the mid-dle. Porsche had already built (but not delivered) around eighty 901’s. The easy x was to change 901 to 911. Porsche’s internal code numbers for the eight generaons of the 911 are used by the factory, automo-ve publicaons, and enthusiasts to disnguish them from each other. I’ll try to sck to US versions. In producon for over y-ve years at some point the markeng people took over from numbering designs in sequence.PorschePorsche24 LH ROUNDUP

Gen 1 1964-73. Just called the 911. Leers following “911” started appearing in 67, 911S. In 68 the 911L, then from 69 to 73 the 911T, 911E and 911S. These leers signied dierent horse-power and/or equipment. E was for Einspritzung (fuel injecon). These cars are now referred to as “Long Hoods”.Gen 2 1974-89. Commonly referred to as the “G” series. Yes, there’s a reason for the “G”, but not if I’m going to keep this simple! These are the “Impact bumper” cars. There are three major dierences in this group. 74-77 are referred to as the narrow bodies. 78-83 is the 911SC, a 3-li-ter engine and wider rear fenders. 84-89 was no longer labeled as a 911 but got the Carrera badge and another engine bump to 3.2 liters.PorscheNow is when it gets interesting, or complicatedPCA-David Wade1965 911G seriesG seriesLH ROUNDUP 25

Gen 3 1989-1994. The Type 964. Almost all mechanical’s and suspension were new, but the body stayed the same except for the bumpers, now more integrated without the rubber bellows on the corners. New 3.6 dual plug engines. Tip-tronic automac transmission available starng in 1991. Two or four-wheel drive models labeled Carrera 2 or Carrera 4.Gen 4 1995-98. Type 993. The last air cooled 911’s. Major redesigned rear suspension. Cleaner body design, especially the front. The air-cooled purists consider this the last “Real” 911.PCA-Brian McNamaraPCA-Eric Meyer964 964 99326 LH ROUNDUP

Gen 5 1999-04. Type 996, rst water cooled 911. The rst enrely new plaorm and engine, some would say the rst modern, 911.Gen 6 2005-2012. Type 997, mainly a re-design of the body, looking more like earlier 911’s (especially the 993). Frequently broken down into two groups as follows: 997.1, 2005-08, and 997.2, 2009-2012. The 997.2 got a completely new engine and the oponal PDK transmission. PDK stands for Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or Porsche “dual-clutch transmission.” GTS trim introduced in 2011.PCA-Christopher DryerPCA-RJ Wilmoth 996 997LH ROUNDUP 27

Gen 7 2012-2019. Type 991. Everyone knew a new 911 was coming in 2012 and expect-ed it to be called the 998. Porsche fooled every-one with the 991 designaon. The 991 was an enrely new plaorm, with just the basic engine and transmission carried over. Like the 997 above these are broken down into two groups, 991.1 and 991.2 because of a major engine change. 2017 brought all new, 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged at-six engines. The 991 revives the use of “911” on the rear of the car as well as Carrera.Late 997’s and early 991’s were sold side by side as 2012 models. The four-wheel drive and Turbo 991’s weren’t available unl later in 2012. So, you may see both 997 and 991’s correctly listed as 2012 models.Gen 8 2020 - present. Type 992. Another enrely new plaorm, but sll only the fourth since 1963. Just the basic engine and transmission carried over. Porsche began selling the 992 early in 2019 but listed them as 2020 models.PorschePorsche992 99128 LH ROUNDUP

Page 29

A lot changed over the yearsThere were turbo versions of the last seven generaons of 911’s. The early (1975-89) Turbo’s are referred to as Type 930. There are various “special” models among the 911 series. Some that you may see are Carrera RS, RS America, Speedster, GT-2, GT-3 and GT3RS.And just to add to the fun most (but not all) can be had as a coupe, Targa, or converble. A choice of rear wheel or four-wheel drive is and opon on many models. Porsche’s web site showed een dif-ferent 911 models available the last me I looked. When in doubt, just call it a 911PorscheLH ROUNDUP 29
