TEACHER OF THE MONTH Cheri Preston 6th Grade White Pine Elementary Burley 10 Years in Education What is your favorite part about being a teacher My favorite part about teaching is that my students teach me just as much as I teach them They inspire me to be kinder more courageous and more inquisitive Something your students might not know about you My students might not know that I can say the alphabet backwards solve a Rubik s cube and juggle but not all at the same time A word of advice 1 Always believe in yourself 2 Spread goodness and kindness in the world 3 Just keep learning asking questions and growing 4 Act like a champion treat yourself like a champion and you will be a champion Nominated by Makenzie She cares so much for each of her students and goes above and beyond the call of duty She makes it seem effortless It seems so natural for her to give so much The kids all love her She teaches them to build each other up and cheer for one another with their different activities and accomplishments My son recently had to have surgery at Primary Children s and she had the class make cards She brought them as well as some books and treats all the way down to the hospital in Utah She also came over to our home a few times to check on him and bring more fun things to keep him occupied and happy during recovery I can t thank her enough she has been such a light Lorraine s 1 8 Page 208 678 1011 Horizontal STAYCONNECTED xxx 1 8 Page Horizontal WITH OUR ONLINE CALENDAR NEW EVENTS U P D AT E S REMINDERS WWW SOUTHERNIDAHOKIDS COM CALENDAR 10 www southernidahokids com

HEALTH WELLNESS sp ons o re d by HEALTHYHABITS Bold Bites Feeding Picky Eaters Feeding picky eaters can feel like a tough puzzle to solve Children might say no to foods for lots of reasons and it s normal for parents to feel unsure what to do But guess what Being a picky eater is normal Lots of kids go through phases where they re picky about food because they re learning to be independent and cautious about new things MILK invite a friend over for dinner who likes trying different foods Seeing their friend eat something might encourage your child to give it a try too Here are some helpful tips to encourage your picky eater to try new and healthy foods Stick to the Rotation Rule Mix things up by offering different foods each day For example if your child had carrots yesterday today they could have broccoli or carrots Keeping it varied helps them get used to trying new things without feeling overwhelmed Start Small Sometimes big portions can be intimidating Begin with tiny portions like one pea or a small piece of noodle and encourage your child by saying it s easy and you could be done in a second Ensure foods they enjoy eating are available during meals or snacks as well Then gradually increase the new food over time Perfect Your Timing It can take children up to 15 tries before a child may like a new food Instead of introducing new foods during big meals like lunch or dinner try offering them as snacks This takes off the pressure at lunch or dinner Keep Your Cool Some kids like the attention they get from avoiding certain foods To make trying new foods feel more casual offer them without making a big deal out of it This way your child may feel more relaxed and willing to give it a try Remember it s all about patience and having fun with food With these strategies you ll be helping your picky eater become more adventurous over time Makenzie Searle St Luke s Community Health Manager Sponsored by Invite an Adventurous Friend Sometimes kids are more willing to try new things when they see their friends doing it So March 2025 11

SCIENCE SPOT Dr Seuss Oobleck In classrooms throughout the country kids celebrate reading this month in honor of Dr Suess s birthday Whether we read classic stories in print or watch the animated versions Dr Seuss creates a perfect background for science learning that spans generations Through colorful imagery Dr Seuss invites us to explore fantastic worlds with memorable characters timeless rhyming patterns and stories with a lesson Two of my favorite Seuss stories to share during STEM lessons are Horton Hears a Who and Bartholomew and the Oobleck Horton the elephant reminds us there are microscopic organisms living just beyond our view and Bartholomew teaches us what happens when oobleck falls from the sky Oobleck is a mixture of cornstarch and water that behaves like either a solid or a liquid depending on how much pressure you apply We can introduce kids of all ages to tools like magnifying glasses and telescopes as we make observations and share new insights There likely isn t a kid who doesn t like to play with oobleck To make your own ooblek combine two parts corn starch with one part water and add green food coloring if you want to match the images in the Dr Seuss story Kids can stir the ingredients and notice a change in the consistency of the mixture They have successfully made a nonNewtonian substance which defies the rules of liquid and solid If they pour it slowly oobleck acts like a liquid But when they punch the mixture it is firm like a solid Oh the places you ll go as you combine reading and science this month xxx 1 2 Page Horizontal 14 www southernidahokids com Amy Christopherson Director CSI Mini Cassia Center and Idaho Science Mom
