Hindsight is always 20-20. When we make adecision on the golf course, it’s easy to secondguess ourselves when the execution does notmatch the expectation. I have discussed whylaying up is not usually the best plan, but I thinkthe greater golfing population still needsconvincing. A common argument in favor oflaying up is that the average player struggles tohit longer clubs, so he will be less accurate.Consequently, the golfer would have had abetter chance from 100 yards in the fairwaythan in a greenside bunker or 20-50 yards fromthe green in the rough. The statistics illustratethat it is almost always better to be closer to thegreen rather than laying up to 100 yards in thefairway. We will examine the median distance left to thehole from a 100-yard shot in the fairway andhow close a golfer would need to be to thegreen to outperform that expectation fromother lies and distances. From 100 yards in thefairway, the average tour pro will leave himselfabout 16 feet to the hole. Amateur golfers willbe considerably farther away with an 80-golferat 28 feet left to the hole, a 90-golfer at 37 feetleft to the hole, and a 100-golfer at 46 feet leftto the hole. To outperform their shot from 100yards in the fairway, all three segments ofamateur golfers can be up to 70 yards away inthe rough and 30 yards away in the sand. Undernormal conditions and circumstances, beingcloser to the green is almost always a betteroption. The other consideration is that your lay-up shotis not a guaranteed fairway-finder. Many times, golfers will lay up into the rough, whichdramatically changes their expected outcomefrom that distance.Excluding circumstances that your ball ends upin a severely sloped lie or behind a tree, it’salmost always easier to hit your shot onto thegreen from a closer distance. Stack the deck inyour favor and commit to your shot knowingthat you have made the correct decision. THE DIVOT | BOARD NEWSRemembering Wrangler:A Tribute to Our BelovedBorder CollieWith sad news Wrangler, the club’s border collie dog, passed away around Christmas. Hewas quite the force when he was younger. I picked him up from the border collie rescuein Hollister, California. He was a problem child. He would break out and try to herdhorses. He was rescued three times and brought back each time. Until I picked him up, Iknew we needed a dog with an over-the-top drive to work the coots, as most dogs getbored easily doing this. He was the right choice, and once we gave him a job every day allhis bad habits went away. He wanted and needed to work every day as a problem solver. One story to share about him. The first time the lake went dry, there were lots of fish thathad to be harvested and disposed of. So me and the staff went around the lake andpicked up fish. I then placed them in dug holes. He watched us, then went out and pickedup fish and put them in the excavated holes. That’s when I knew this dog was a superproblem solver. This is what Border Collies are known to be.Thanks for the work and good times RIP Wrangler. WaynePAGE 07

Men's Live ball is shifting to a new time slot on Monday evenings, from 5:30 pm to7:00 pm. This change promises a fresh and energetic start to the week for our players. During the construction period, if you have any questions or inquiries, please don'thesitate to stop by the pro shop for assistance. We're here to help make thistransition as smooth as possible for you. Register Here In tennis, tension and tightness can hinder your game, especially when moving backward on the court. This observation comes from watching many of our team matches in February. This tension canprevent you from transferring your weight effectively into your shots, leading to less power andcontrol. To counter this, focus on staying relaxed and loose, especially in your upper body and grip. When youfeel tense, take a moment to breathe deeply and consciously release any tension. As you move backward, concentrate on transferring your weight smoothly from your back foot to yourfront foot as you prepare to hit the ball. This will help you generate more power and accuracy in yourshots. Remember, relaxation is key to fluid and powerful movement on the tennis court. So, take a deepbreath, relax, and let your shots flow. racquets project planTennis Tip: Relaxing to Improve Shot Power

It was a solid month for the La Cumbre Ladies Interclub teams. The A2s, Bs, and Cscontinue to hold onto first place in their respective leagues after delivering someoutstanding tennis performances against their rivals in February. One of the standout matches was when the C team triumphed over SBTC, securingvictory with two third-set tiebreakers. The team showed remarkable resilience, bouncing back after losing the first set on three lines. With the finish line in sight, onlya couple more matches remain in what promises to be a nail-biting conclusion to anamazing season. I had a conversation with a friend last month, and they were seeking someadvice on their eating habits. The conversation reminded me of the importanceof how we frame and implement changes to our routines when we are looking tobetter ourselves. The first question we tend to ask ourselves is, “What do I needto cut out of my diet or lifestyle to make the changes I want to see?”. It isextremely natural to think this way, and I am guilty of this myself. It isn’t evennecessarily a bad thing to ask yourself, depending on the type of person you areand how you motivate. My only concern about this thought is that it immediatelytakes you to a restrictive mindset. When we only focus on what we need toeliminate or restrict, it is easy to get the feeling that you are trapped and not freeto make your own choices. This ultimately leads to regression and bingeing ofthe things we want to get rid of or limit.Let’s make the first question we ask ourselves, “What positive behavior can I addto my diet or lifestyle to achieve the change I want to see?”. This questionempowers us rather than traps us. When we focus on adding the “good,” wehave less time to worry about the “bad,” and those undesirable habits tend todecrease and diminish naturally on their own. Let’s say my goal is to lose weight. There are a handful of ways (good and bad) toachieve this, and most of us will immediately gravitate to something along thelines of cutting calories or carbs as the solution. These solutions very much can and would work to some extent, but this is wheremy challenge to you kicks in. I am not going to worry about what I shouldn’thave, but instead, I am going to prioritize my protein and water intake. If I focuson those two things, I will be significantly more satiated throughout the day. If Iam not as hungry, I will naturally eat fewer calories. If I hit my protein goal, mymuscles are less likely to cannibalize themselves for energy. The more musclemass on my body, the faster my metabolism is. The faster my metabolism, themore calories my body burns. If I hit my water goal, then I will be more hydrated. If I am more hydrated, my body is more open to making changes, such as fatloss, because it’s less likely to be in preservation mode. I know I just blabbed on for a while there, but I wanted to make a point. I verywell could have achieved my goal, and not once did I have to tell myself I couldn’teat or drink something. A life without pizza and cookies is not a reality I want tolive in. Next time you make a goal for yourself, take a step back and notice how you areframing the main challenges. If your goal only includes eliminating “bad” things, rework it to focus on adding the “good” things. With love,Jarratt Rouse
