sponsored by sponsored by HEALTH WELLNESS Urinary Tract Infections SPOTLIGHT What is the urinary tract The urinary tract includes the kidneys ureters bladder and urethra or all of the parts in the body that play a role in producing and excreting urine more commonly known as pee The upper urinary tract includes the kidneys and the ureters The lower urinary tract includes the bladder and urethra What is a urinary tract infection A urinary tract infection is an overgrowth of a bacteria that should not be there It can occur at any part of the urinary tract but most commonly begins as a lower urinary tract infection Additionally it is most frequently caused by an overgrowth of the bacteria Escherichia coli or E coli This bacteria typically lives in our gastrointestinal tract and does not cause problems However when it gets into our urinary system it can and frequently does lead to problems Typically when you are young it gets in through your urethra or the hole you pee out of after you use the bathroom This is one of the main reasons why your parents may ask you to wipe from front to back when you poop What are common symptoms problems of a urinary tract infection Pain or burning while urinating Frequent urination Feeling the need to urinate despite having an empty bladder Bloody urine may just look slightly pink Pressure or cramping in the groin or lower abdomen If you start to have back pain nausea vomiting and fevers this could mean the infection is spreading to your kidneys and this could require more intense medical treatment How common are urinary tract infections It is estimated that 7 8 of girls and 1 7 of boys have at least one episode by seven years of age The peak of UTIs was observed in the first year of life and another peak between two and four years of age which corresponds to the toilet training age If you get frequent recurrent urinary tract infections you may have a condition known as vesicoureteral reflux VUR and should talk with your provider about additional testing It s estimated that about 30 to 40 of infants and toddlers with urinary tract infection have VUR How do we treat a urinary tract infection Urinary tract infections are diagnosed by a healthcare professional and they will likely have you pee in a cup to test for bacteria and other things in your urine that indicate an infection If you are found to have an infection your medical provider will prescribe antibiotics that should help your body get rid of the troublesome bacteria In severe cases you may need to go to the hospital for treatment and monitoring Evan Johnson PAC Sources www cdc gov antibiotic use uti html www ncbi nlm nih gov www merckmanuals com 208 736 7422 OPEN 8AM TO 7PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK www picctf com We ve moved across from Walmart in Twin Falls 25 M a r c h 2 0 2 4
