Bulletin4 • March 2023 Agenda’s #TopTech of 2022 is...Emily Harris!Want to be our next #TopTech?Get in touch today!03456 44 55 45 | 01964 671 791hello@agendalifesciences.co.ukwww.agendalifesciences.comEach year we like to recognise technicians who have gone the extra mile, whose achievements, attitude towards work and overall support to research has been fantastic. This year we are proud to announce our Tech of the Year award goes to Emily Harris, who is currently working at a clients’ facility in Cambridge.Emily commenced work with us over a year ago and from the outset she has always gone that extra mile. Her first placement was in Edinburgh, she then transferred down to Birmingham and then onto Cambridge where she has been for the past 5 months.Client feedback:“Emily joined Birmingham University as a trainee technician from Agenda in July 2022– during her placement we could immediately see her potential to become an excellent animal technician. During her time with us Emily worked on the breeding floor learning the husbandry required for GA strains of mice. Emily quickly fitted in as part of the team and showed herself to be a quick learner and great team player. We wish her all the best in establishing a career in the industry.Since Emily started with us, her confidence has flourished; she is able to speak to users about issues and communicates well with her fellow team members. Emily is a very quick learner, which helped her complete all her core husbandry assessments in the first few months of being with us. Emily is a very reliable technician and is a great team player as she helps others to make sure things are all complete for the day. I think Emily has worked hard over the last six months and can see why she has won the Tech of the Year for Agenda. Keep up the good work.” We all celebrate Emily’s achievement of this award and congratulate her for her hard work and support to her peers with a ‘Technician of the year’ trophy, £100 in vouchers and an extra day off work!Well done, Emily, Keep up the good work!Agenda’s #TopTech of 2022 is...Emily Harris!Want to be our next #TopTech?Get in touch today!03456 44 55 45 | 01964 671 791hello@agendalifesciences.co.ukwww.agendalifesciences.comEach year we like to recognise technicians who have gone the extra mile, whose achievements, attitude towards work and overall support to research has been fantastic. This year we are proud to announce our Tech of the Year award goes to Emily Harris, who is currently working at a clients’ facility in Cambridge.Emily commenced work with us over a year ago and from the outset she has always gone that extra mile. BulletinJuly 2020• 5Dear ReadersTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. See page 16 to see if you areeligible – even if you are not, please pass the information on to thosewho are.Make sure you take care and …Keep Reading!CarolePoverty IAT LAUNCHES EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY GenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAME BUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 10/7/20 10:01 Page 5March 2023• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole As I write this, Congress looms close and as usual I cannot believe another year has passed. I think this is the twenty- rst time I have attended, or maybe the twentieth, as we missed one due to COVID and another was held online. I suppose I did not miss the online event, but it is not really the same, attending in my home of ce. In any case, I look forward, as always, to seeing lots of you there and the programme looks packed and interesting. I have noticed from previous years that both the February and March editions of the Bulletin contain details of the Branch AGMs and talks that usually accompany them. This year is no different – we have two branch reports, one from Edinburgh and one from Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex. They both had really interesting presentations. In Edinburgh they now have a colony of Cairo Spiny Mice which seem really cute, if not dif cult to handle! See pages 16 – 18 for that report. Down in Southampton, the SH&S were treated to a presentation on developments in monoclonal antibody for cancer therapies. You can read about this important research on pages 19 – 20. On a different subject but still in the same report, what a shame to read about nancial losses arising from their beer tour, it has been reported on in a previous issue and looked really good. Elsewhere, if you have ever wanted to become a RAnTech, then see Dispatches – page 8, which describes the entry requirements for becoming one. Also in the same piece there is information about the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body – the RSPCA have created an online resource called the AWERB Directory, which is very useful if you sit on an AWERB and even if you do not it is de nitely worth bringing to the attention of those who do.I hope to see many of you at Congress andAgenda’s #TopTech of 2022 is...Emily Harris!Want to be our next #TopTech?Get in touch today!03456 44 55 45 | 01964 671 791hello@agendalifesciences.co.ukwww.agendalifesciences.comEach year we like to recognise technicians who have gone the extra mile, whose achievements, attitude towards work and overall support to research has been fantastic. This year we are proud to announce our Tech of the Year award goes to Emily Harris, who is currently working at a clients’ facility in Cambridge.Emily commenced work with us over a year ago and from the outset she has always gone that extra mile. Let’s Talk about ... Menopause at workwww.iat.org.ukInstitute of Animal TechnologyCOUNCILEDI GroupEquity, Diversity and InclusionIt’s OK … NOT TO BE OKAY …Let’s Talk about ... Menopause at workManaging the effects of the menopause at work is important for employers and employees.Menopause can have a huge impact on your life, including relationships and work. For those experiencing symptoms it can be a difficult and stressful time. Everyone will experience the menopause differently and for some, symptoms can be quite severe and can affect people both physically and mentally. The menopause is a natural stage of life which affects most women and other people who have a menstrual cycle. This can include:l trans people – ‘trans’ is an umbrella term used to describe people whose gender is not the same as the sex they were assigned at birthl people with ‘variations of sex development’ (VSD) – some people might prefer to identify as intersex or use the term ‘differences in sex development’ (DSD)It is important for employers to be aware of all of the people who might go through the menopause and menopause symptoms and to support them all equally. The menopause usually happens between 45 and 55 years of age but it can also happen earlier or later in someone’s life. For many people symptoms last about 4 years, but in some cases symptoms can last a lot longer. Symptoms typically include:Mental health symptoms- changes to mood, low mood, anxiety, mood swings, low self-esteem, problems with memory , or concentration ( brain fog)Physical symptoms include:l hot flushes, when you have sudden feelings of hot or cold in your face, neck and chest which can make you dizzyl difficulty sleeping, which may be a result of night sweats and make you feel tired and irritable during the dayl palpitations, when your heartbeats suddenly become more noticeablel headaches and migraines that are worse than usuall muscle aches and joint pains l changed body shape and weight gain l skin changes including dry and itchy skinl reduced sex drivel vaginal dryness and pain, itching or discomfort during sexl recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)There are 3 different stages to the menopause:- Perimenopause (around menopause- the time taken for the whole process).- Menopause (the actual process).- Post menopause (the term to describe when someone has gone through the menopause). Some people might also experience early menopause or go through medical menopause earlier in their lives. These types of menopause can be medically complicated, so employers should consider this when supporting their staff. All stages and types of the menopause are different and symptoms can vary from person to person, and range from very mild to severe. It is important that the menopause need to be handled sensitively and confidentially. What can we do?It is important for employers to be aware that the menopause and its symptoms can affect staff at any time. Being aware of this can help staff continue to do their job confidently and effectively. The menopause can also have an impact on those supporting someone going through the menopause, for example a relative, partner, colleague or carer.Although the menopause will only be experienced by women and other people who have a menstrual cycle, men should also be included in conversations and training. This is because they might be supporting others going through it.Supporting and creating a positive and open environment between an employer and someone affected by the menopause can help prevent the person from:l losing confidence in their skills and abilitiesl feeling like they need to take time off work and hide the reasons for itl having increased mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety and depressionl leaving their jobIf someone is discriminated against at workIf an employee or worker is put at a disadvantage or treated less favourably because of their menopause symptoms, this could be discriminatory if connected to a protected characteristic.References and further support can be found at:https://www.acas.org.uk/menopause-at-work/menopause-and-the-lawhttps://www.nhs.uk/conditions/menopause/help-and-support/https://www.themenopausecharity.org/https://www.balance-menopause.com/IAT BULLETIN MAR23.indd 10 28/02/2023 11:39

This is because they might be supporting others going through it.Supporting and creating a positive and open environment between an employer and someone affected by the menopause can help prevent the person from:l losing confidence in their skills and abilitiesl feeling like they need to take time off work and hide the reasons for itl having increased mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety and depressionl leaving their jobIf someone is discriminated against at workIf an employee or worker is put at a disadvantage or treated less favourably because of their menopause symptoms, this could be discriminatory if connected to a protected characteristic.References and further support can be found at:https://www.acas.org.uk/menopause-at-work/menopause-and-the-lawhttps://www.nhs.uk/conditions/menopause/help-and-support/https://www.themenopausecharity.org/https://www.balance-menopause.com/IAT BULLETIN MAR23.indd 11 28/02/2023 11:39

This was given by Craig Watt one of the facility managers at Edinburgh University. They have the only colony of Spiny mice in the UK, acquired when a facility in Germany no longer required them. The Cairo Spiny Mouse (Acomys cahirinus) is mainly found in northern Africa. They closely resemble gerbils and are a fascinating species. They have a lifespan of about 4 years, a body length between 95-127 mm (3-5 inches) with a tail of similar length and weigh 43-85 grammes as adults. They are omnivores and fed on SDS RM1 maintenance diet and a scattered hamster food. Though they like nothing better than getting their weekly treat of dried mealworms!Edinburgh Branch Presentation and Annual General Meeting (AGM) CAIRO SPINY MOUSE The Edinburgh branch held a talk on the Cairo Spiny Mouse on 8th February 2023 before our Annual General Meeting. The spiny mouse has the remarkable defence mechanism of being able to slough off its skin and undergo a scar less regeneration of skin wounds. They are also sensitive to developing diabetes when fed with high-fat or high-sugar diets. In addition the females undergo a menstrual cycle which is very close to that of humans. This makes then a useful model for a number of fields of research including tissue repair and regeneration, diabetic studies and reproduction studies. Now for a drawback, the spines which give the mouse its name run all along the back are very sharp which can make handling a problem. Craig has found that a good pair of gardening gloves is essential The females give birth to litters of up to five pups. He also suggests using a mob cap to assist with restraint when required as you can both see through this and inject through it as well.Craig hopes that now the colony is established the research groups will begin to do work with them. This talk was very well received and very informative.Reporter: Keith ChalmersSITUATIONS VACANTVisit the Careers pages on the IAT Website for the latest vacancieshttps://www.iat.org.uk/vacanciesRecruitment advertising details from mail@prcassoc.co.ukIAT BULLETIN MAR23.indd 18 28/02/2023 11:39
BulletinMarch 2023 • 19 Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex BranchAnnual General Meeting (AGM) Report and MeetingThe SH&S Branch AGM took place at the Institute of Developmental Sciences Building at Southampton University on Tuesday 7th February. A big thank you to Lesley and Caroline for hosting and to Sharon Sears from Tecniplast for agreeing to sponsor the event. The evening started with a talk by Professor Stephen Beers from the University of Southampton’s School of Medicine, entitled ‘Developing monoclonal antibodies (mAb) for anti-cancer therapies’. He detailed how using mouse models allowed his team to investigate the mechanisms, actions and efficacy requirements for anti-cancer antibody therapy. He explained how different transgenic mouse models were used in his work which targeted cancer via three different classes of mAb, which either blocked or directly targeted the tumours. Over a hundred of these types of therapies have now been approved of by the FDA, some were so effective that they removed the need to test in primates prior to approval. After the talk we turned to AGM. The first order of business was apologies from Jas Barley, Sharon Sears and Andy Domone. The minutes of the previous AGM and matters arising were then covered. Fran presented her Secretaries Report which covered our 2022 activities including the AGM, committee meetings and our social event, the Hogsback Brewery tour. Plus, correspondence and attendance at Branch Liaison Group meetings. Marc’s Treasurer Report showed that Branch has £2295 in its account, with an excess of expenditure of £491 over the 2021 accounts. This additional expenditure was, in part due to the loss of £230 spent on the brewery tour tickets that were not sold. The election of Officers resulted in the following appointment: Chairman: Stuart Mackrell. Secretary: Fran Whitmore. Treasurer: Marc Lind.
