March again – this time last year saw the start of reactions to the pandemic in the UK. Hopefully this year it signals the beginning of the long road out of it and the end of the fi nal lockdown. Who would have believed where we stand today? As I write this, 16 million people have currently been vaccinated at least once and when you read this it will be a lot more. I think it is fair to say that this episode in history has changed the way we both live and work, not just in the short term but more long term. Let me give you an example of that, twelve months ago I had never heard of Zoom and had only attended a couple of virtual conferences, which had a great deal of novelty value. Now, however, I regularly use Zoom and other platforms to talk to others and have attended many conferences, workshops and webinars online, it has become normal for me. For those of you who are unaware, Congress 2021 is also going to be online this year – see page 34, unlike 2019, as shown on the front cover. I am really looking forward to it, there are a big range of different topics – something to suit everyone. Something else to bear in mind this year – if you are an IAT member, Congress is completely free! Not only is it Congress this month, but as usual it is also Tech month – see page 4, another virtual event and I am led to believe there are many prizes up for grabs. Registration for Bingo is already open, see page 17.I started this column talking about some of the changes that have been brought about by COVID-19 and I want to end thinking of a really negative impact of social distancing, isolation and loneliness. The IAT recognises the issues and has created Coffee Catch Up, an opportunity to meet up with other like-minded people every Wednesday at 3.30, see page 30.I hope to see you at Congress, hear about your prize-winning efforts at Tech Month and speak to you for a Coffee and a Chat. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Bulletin10 • March 2021 Changes to How we Deliver 2020 saw us adapt and change our delivery method for End Point Assessments for apprentices. Throughout 2020, we have delivered remote assessments through a secure system, which allows us to continue being an Ofqual-recognised organisation and has led us to be regarded as one of the most innovative assessors by both Ofqual and the Home Office.During the pandemic we have worked closely with training providers to ensure that the disruption learners have experienced has been kept to a minimum. At times this has been a learning experience for all, but as a result, we believe we are entering 2021 in a stronger position than ever before.New Website We have set up IAT Education, whose website iateducation.co.uk was launched on January 18th. The website will be having monthly updates on all educational matters. Please visit the website and bookmark for your education information.IAT MAR21 BULLETIN20.indd 10 04/03/2021 12:03

Bulletin18 • March 2021 Assessment and Treatment of Animal Welfare through TelemedicineThe coronavirus pandemic has had a major impact on society with many industries closed and people either out of work or working from home due to lockdowns. Our dedicated Animal Technicians continue to work through the pandemic, providing care to animals and ensuring their needs are met. Animal welfare is critical and technologists have responded and continue to adapt to the crisis ensuring that husbandry is prioritised. One adaptation has been in the ways of communicating with AWERBS, researchers, vets, Animal Technologists and other animal husbandry related staff is by virtual meetings using platforms such as Zoom rather than face to face meetings. When dealing with welfare issues, technicians have looked at new ways of communicating, one of which is the use of Telemedicine. Telemedicine Telemedicine is a tool that makes healthcare more accessible, cost-effective and increases patient engagement. Since its debut in the late 1950s, advances in telemedicine have contributed to older people being given the choice to have medical advice delivered to them in their own homes. Additionally, patients that reside in rural areas that previously had difficulties accessing a doctor, can now reach them virtually. Physicians and patients can share information in real time. Healthcare workers can see and capture readings from medical devices at faraway locations. Using telemedicine software, patients can see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment without having to wait for an appointment and can do so from the comfort of their own home. This use of electronic communication and information technology to provide clinical healthcare remotely, is also an emerging area of practice in the veterinary sector. Telemedicine extends to the provision of services by video-link, text, instant messaging, telephone or by any other remote means. The technology has greatly improved and several animal research facilities had successfully been using this technology before the pandemic. It has now been taken up and is being used more widely, so welfare staff, researchers and vets can review health and husbandry issues with animals from a distance, allowing work to continue within social distancing and lockdown restrictions. IAT MAR21 BULLETIN20.indd 18 04/03/2021 12:03
BulletinMarch 2021 • 19 The Animal Technician seeing an animal that they have concerns about, reviews the animal and takes a video and / or photo. These are emailed to the researcher in question, the vet and welfare officer, with a detailed description of what is being seen. A photo of the cage label is also included, as this is important information which will aid all concerned to make an informed decision on the welfare of the animal. This technology is a major benefit with the current social distancing and lockdown rules in place. It gives staff and researchers easy access to the NVS. All that is required is a laptop or tablet with a decent internet connection and a way of taking photos or video. It is ideal for minor issues but caution should be exercised when used for more complex matters. It is always important to include good descriptions and view of the animal, so that assessment and treatment options can be delivered in a safe and responsible manner. This technology, while keeping everyone informed also gives an electronic record of the issue and the agreed treatment plan. Animal Technologist’s view:In both my current and previous facilities, I have been using this technology to aid animal care and welfare. When staff had concerns over an animal’s welfare, I would take videos and photos of the animal/s and email these with a detailed description of what I was seeing, with a photo of the cage label. This would be emailed to the following:VetPersonal Licence Holder or researcher in charge of the studyNACWO Including a photo of the cage label informed the researcher, vet and NACWO if it was a stock or experimental animal. A detailed description of what is seen and a personal opinion of the animal helps the vet to know what the issue was, before seeing the animal and informs the researcher that there is an issue with the animal. Thereby opening channels of communication between the vet, researcher and NACWO on the condition of the animal and determining the next steps needed. BulletinMarch 2021 • 27iMAD Award – Recognition to those that have made a differenceLooking to recognise and reward those everyday actions that staff do that are typically met with the reply of ‘it’s just part of my job’ but actually impacts on the animals in their care or their colleagues?Something that allows timely recognition, with a small reward as a token of gratitude? As almost everyone runs on a combination of caffeine and sugar, how about a free fresh ground coffee and freshly made cake? But once consumed the recognition could easily be ‘forgotten’ so how about a keepsake to serve as a (daily) reminder? The Commemorative Mug is born The recipient receives a mug with their name, date and the slogan “I made a difference to a mouse’’.IAT MAR21 BULLETIN20.indd 27 04/03/2021 12:03

To ensure impartiality and non-biased judging, one of our Senior Group Leaders who heads the Biological Steering Committee judges all the nominations and decides on the monthly winner. The photo is of our first month’s winners, where Nimesh (Scientist) was recognised for the initial idea and both Michael (BRU) and Jack (Property Services) were jointly recognised for the effort that they both put in to tracing and remedying a lighting concern within a holding room. There was an open invitation to all other Branches and it was nice to see Robin and Zoe joining us from the London Branch and North East Branch.
