MANGONUI SCHOOL Mangonui School is a great school of which the Community is very proud. Mangonui School has managed to utilise available funding to enhance and develop the school grounds and environment. The school is situated in one of Mangonui’s prime real estate positions, sitting in a bush setting with beautiful harbour views. The school has a swimming pool, two tennis courts, field area, 2 playgrounds, 2 concreted court areas, a seating area which has been designed to include a stage, the bush area is also available as a play area for the children. We also have a wonderful sandpit which has been shaded. Mangonui School opened in 1858 on this site. Part of the original school is still in use today as the Kotuku Classroom. It has a lovely view past neighbouring historic St. Andrews church and over the upper reaches of the Mangonui Harbour. The roll at Mangonui School is 140. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds. We have a strong emphasis on ‘Kaitiaki of Kind and Caring’ - Kaitiaki of Ourselves, Others and the Environment. We have a zero tolerance to bullying. We know that what school you send your child to is a big decision. Our classroom environments have a mixture of traditional and new approaches to learning. We have iPads for all our junior students and Chromebooks for all our senior students BUT we also place value on pencil and paper! Our Mangonui School curriculum is based on our local context. We learn a lot about the land and sea from both a Maori and Non Maori perspective. We place importance on our students knowing who they are and where they come from. Your child will have a rich learning experiences. We place a high value on Outside the Classroom experiences from learning to paddleboard, going on school camps and doing lots of school trips. Sport is also a big priority. We want our students to be the leaders of tomorrow. The local iwi is Ngati Kahu. Children from this iwi make up 38% of the school roll. 60% of our student population identify themselves as Maori. The whole school do Kapa Haka each week (Juniors .30min Seniors .60min). Te Ao Maori has a special status at Mangonui School. Learning the stories and histories of our area is part of knowing who you are and where you come from. We want our students to carry these with them. There are at present seven learning spaces. The Team at Mangonui School are expert teachers who are constantly challenged and provided with the very best professional development opportunities available in New Zealand. They are innovative, intelligent and passionate. We currently have 7 classroom teachers, and 4 Teacher Aides working in our classrooms.

LUCKY BOOK CLUB:Twice a term the school offers the opportunity for pupils to purchase paper backed books from the Scholastic Book Club. There is no obligation to purchase these books. WE ARE A “DUFFY” SCHOOL:This means that three times a year all pupils are given books of their choice to encourage and develop good reading habits. There is also a Kids at Home scheme run by the Duffy Trust which provides books for our pre-schoolers on their birthdays. The Duffy scheme at Mangonui School is sponsored by Pokaka Timber. ENROLMENT PROCEDURE:Parents please call at the office when enrolling a new student. The Education Act requires parents enrolling a student for the first time, at five years of age to produce their birth certificate as suitable evidence of the child’s date of birth. We also require a copy of your child’s immunisation papers. You may also pre-enrol your 4 year olds. Pre-enrolment means that we have the process complete, and your child may go straight to his/her class on their birthday. The information on the enrolment form is collated for enrolment, school business and emergency procedures. You are welcome to check the information at any time. If you have any queries contact the Principal who is the privacy officer. Please give details of any allergies or health conditions your child may have. We also encourage children to have visits before they start at school. SOME WAYS YOU CAN PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR SCHOOL: • Talk with them at every opportunity. So much of later learning is based on being able to speak well and understand when others are speaking. Value their opinion and encourage them to give it.• Read to them as often as you can. Expose them to books. The Kaitaia library is excellent and you can also join our school library and borrow books from here. This is a great way to introduce you child to our school.• Do lots of counting. Anywhere and everywhere and everything. Packs of playing cards are really good for introducing numbers. You can play game to match and order numbers with these.• Help them to learn to write their name. Knowing the alphabet is always helpful - try to match each letter with its sound. Learn and use lower case letters (little letters) rather than capitals.• Give them pencils and colouring in felts and crayons. Let them draw and colour in. Colouring in books are great for developing fine motor skills. Even little boys will happily colour in pictures of Batman!• Encourage them to be more independent. Things like carrying their own gear, tidying away after themselves and solving simple problems by themselves helps to develop their independence.• Make sure they are familiar with the school environment. Bring them to play in the playground at the weekend. School visits can start FOUR weeks before they turn five and this is a good opportunity to get to know the teacher and class routines.• If you are positive and happy about school, your child will be too.• Visit our website www.mangonui.school.nz Go to classroom ‘Google sites’.

We do not let anyone else pick up your child without your permission, so if you would like someone else to do this, PLEASE ring the school. The Principal should be advised of any custody orders involving legal guardianship or access limitations and we treat such information in confidence. TELEPHONING THE SCHOOL:Whenever possible it would be appreciated if parents could contact the school before 9am, during intervals or after school. The School Directory can be found near the front of this booklet. It contains contact numbers for the school. The office is not always manned so please leave a message, these are checked regularly. NB. Please arrange your child's home travelling arrangements before school OR please phone before 2.00pm NOT at the last minute as this causes confusion. ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL:By regulation, once enrolled, children are required to attend school unless prevented by illness, special home circumstances or other similar reasons. If your child is going to be away PLEASE RING to let the school know they will be away and for how long. The school undertakes a daily morning check on the whereabouts of all students. This ensures the safety of students for both parents and the school. The school is required to inform the School Board of unexplained absences or irregular attendance. TRANSPORT TO SCHOOL BUSES:4 runs are contracted by Ritchies Buses to serve our school. KOHUMARU and HIHI runs arrive at 8.10am approximately and BACK RIVER soon after 8.20am. Finally the bulk of our pupils arrive at 8.45am when the start bell goes. In the afternoon the reverse happens. The MANGONUI/TAIPA bus leaves promptly at 2.25pm and pupils wait 30 minutes for HIHI runs which leave at 3.00pm. NB. Some pupils transfer at TAIPA to PARAPARA and FERN FLAT runs. Pupils are not strictly eligible on these runs, however, they may travel on these buses as long as no over-crowding exists. Any bus problems contact the school. BUS RULES:To travel on the bus is a privilege, not a right. Children are expected to behave sensibly, protecting the safety of themselves and others. In the interest of safety, the following bus rules must be observed:• Remain seated until bus stops.• When getting off the bus, stand back from the road and wait until the bus has left before walking on.• If your child has a change of destination, (is catching a different bus home) a note to the teacher is expected. This avoids confusion.• If unsocial or dangerous behaviour occurs, then the child in question receives one verbal warning. If further discipline is required, a written warning is received by the parent/caregiver. Repeated offenders could be banned from travelling on buses. Parents/Caregivers would have to make their own arrangements for their child’s transport to school. We are required to treat bad bus behaviour very seriously because of the potential danger to all children on our busy roads.
