PASTORAL EXCELLENCE 5 PASTORAL MEMBER OF STAFF OF THE YEAR Malone College are delighted to announce another success as classroom assistant Ms Quinn won the Pastoral Member of Staff of the Year for all the UK schools at the National Awards held in England Ms Quinn attended the awards along with our SENCO Ms Mary Mc Caffrey who went on to say When you think of a classroom assistant you think of a supportive adult who works with one or two students under the direction of the teacher However at Malone Integrated College classroom assistants are so much more than this generic job description One such assistant is Ms Ita Quinn Ita has worked at Malone for 18 years and has supported many students over those years with a various range of needs Ita has worked with all age groups but has found herself most connected with our young adults as she navigates them through their post 16 studies She has built up a wealth of knowledge across the A level subject offerings as well as gotten to grips with the demands of the more coursework portfolio based BTEC qualifications Ita s academic superpower is maths And our students know this Ita supports small groups of junior students with their numeracy struggles during the school week however our busy GCSE students are only available for extra support sessions when school has ended This is when Ita begins her after school supports working over and above her contracted hours She recognises the need for one to one or very small group support in maths as many students are conscious of getting things wrong in front of others Ita has a rule however that there are no break or lunchtime classes yes this is because she feels the students need their downtime but it is also because Ita isn t available During these times Ita supports our students who have social and communication needs Many of our ASD students can experience sensory overload in the noisy and crowded canteen and play areas These students come to Ita in the Individual Needs area where there is a quieter vibe but certainly plenty of craic Over her mug of strong black coffee Ita hears about the students school day and their exciting weekend plans She pretends to know about Tik Tok and Roblox but heartily praises their football efforts when they reveal they saved a last minute goal from the best team in the league During a recent bout of illness when she was unfortunately hospitalised Ita rang in to school each day to have a speakerphone catch up with her lunchtime crew She knew how valuable that sense of routine is and it goes without saying that their voices were restorative for her too It is no doubt that Ita goes above and beyond to support our students academically and pastorally

9 STUDENT WELLBEING SCHOOL OF SANCTUARY STUDENT SUPPORT WELLBEING The integrated ethos of Malone College permeates all aspects of the curriculum and is integral to the programme of pastoral care Here at Malone we create a caring environment where children are supported and encouraged each day and this is crucial to the social and personal development of young people It is essential in helping them to develop as responsible and independent young adults with self esteem who can play a full role in the community AN ANTI BULLYING SCHOOL As part of our Child Protection and Safeguarding procedures within the College is our policy on bullying Throughout the education of our pupils we encourage students to accept tolerate and respect each other through trust support and care It is therefore obvious to state that any form of bullying which contravenes the ethos of the college will not be tolerated In September 2023 the school took a proactive approach when we became a member school of The Anti Bullying Alliance At Malone College we believe all children and young people have intrinsic value and worth and we embrace their uniqueness and autonomy Most bullying goes unreported for three reasons three barriers that a young person must jump over Firstly maybe the young person isn t sure who they should go to Next even if they know who to approach perhaps a teacher they may not feel confident enough to talk about their experiences Finally there is the fear of being seen to report bullying by their peers or the bullies themselves That s where CyberSyd comes in CyberSyd removes these barriers by providing a platform for young people to report bullying easily and confidentially from anywhere and at any time Our students also take part in workshops delivered by Cara Friend This training is designed to help young people understand and ensure they know that bullying behaviour and or inappropriate language toward LGBTQIA racial and religious minorities youth with disabilities and socially isolated young people is not acceptable The workshops build knowledge they develop understanding and promote respect and inclusivity for all which are core values of integrated education Our Anti Bullying Ambassadors team consists of pupils who have been trained to work proactively to support victims of bullying behaviour raise awareness of the effects of bullying and to work preventatively to stamp out all forms of bullying in Malone Integrated College The Anti Bullying Ambassadors are involved in The Hub and playground at lunchtimes They are extremely approachable and can be easily identified with their ABA badges throughout school and on school buses MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING AT MALONE The College works in conjunction with The Emotional Wellbeing Team in Schools EWTS to develop capacity knowledge confidence and relationships around emotional wellbeing issues through a whole school approach In line with the Children and Young People s Emotional Health and Wellbeing in Schools Framework the overall aim is for a reduction in the growth of longer term mental health difficulties EWTS work preventatively with young people school staff and parents to increase awareness and knowledge around key emotional wellbeing themes and the early intervention supports available in the community and voluntary sector as well as the thresholds of and support available within CAMHS As a result it is hoped that the universal wellbeing of young people in schools with whom EWTS has worked is supported The YeHa Project is a youth based educational programme that aims to give young people the skills and knowledge they need to safeguard their mental health and that of their peers We believe that there is a basic level of knowledge and skill that everyone needs around their own mental health By teaching every pupil about mental health we hope that they will be equipped to meet the challenges they and their friends will encounter in life Our 6th form students have been trained in mental health first aid in conjunction with TAMHI By training older pupils to deliver mental health lessons to younger pupils the project aims to bypass the walls many young people put up when dealing with adults We have several Teacher Counsellors available to students for referral We also have a visiting counsellor from Action Mental Health HOPE and other outside agencies who provides additional support
