A GOLF CLUB WITH HERITAGE2

Malden Golf Club was founded in 1893 as the Raynes Park Golf Club. The original course was required for development so the club moved to its present site in 1926. It was opened by the President of the day Colonel Sir Augustus Fitzgeorge and followed by an exhibition match between Abe Mitchell, Harry Vardon (famous for the Vardon grip), Alex Herd and Ted Ray, four of the great professionals of the time. Alex Herd had advised on the layout of the course. The land, which now forms the main areas of the course, was originally part of the Coombe Manor Estate which had been acquired from Queen Elizabeth I in 1579. In 1753 the land was bought by John Spencer who became the 1st Earl Spencer (the same Spencer family as Princess Diana). In 1837, the 3rd Earl Spencer sold the land to Prince Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge and the seventh son of George III. When he died in 1850, his son George inherited the estate. George subsequently married an actress, who as a commoner was not able to become a Duchess and her sons could not inherit the Duke's title. It was their younger son, Colonel Sir Augustus Fitzgeorge KCVO CB, who inherited the land in 1922 before turning it into a golf course and becoming President of the Club until his death in 1933. One of the distinguished members in the early 1900's was Wing Commander Frank Brock OBE RNAS. He was a member of the Brocks Fireworks family which had developed pyrotechnics for use in military raids. One such "raid" was at Zeebrugge in 1918. Wing Commander Brock went as an observer on HMS Vindictive to Zeebrugge, but was killed assisting seamen in an attempt to silence German guns. To this day the club plays for the Brock Cup each Armistice Sunday in commemoration. Some of the club's more famous sporting names include Jack Hobbs, the cricketer, Joe Davis, the snooker player, Mickey Stewart of Surrey & England cricket, Terry Mancini ex- Arsenal FC all of whom were keen members. Dai Rees, the nine times Ryder Cup player was an assistant for a short while as was Peter Coleman the long time caddy to Bernhard Langer. George Howard served as professional from 1953 until his retirement in 1990. During his career George Howard had numerous golfing achievements including a top 20 finish in the Open. He went on to captain Surrey PGA and became its President in 1991. His successor Robert Hunter was Head Professional for 26 years retiring in 2016. Robert, highly respected amongst his peers had been an ambassador for Calaway, Captain of the Surrey PGA and was awarded PGA ‘Professional of the Year’ in 2016. His assistant Ben Tebbs is now our Head Professional. THE HISTORY OF MALDEN GOLF CLUB3

Using the golf courseAs a member of Malden Golf Club, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the many golfing events and activities during the year. A list of all the month’s activities is available on our website and is posted on the notice-board in the Clubhouse foyer. This includes the dates for Club matches, competitions, societies, and the other events that make up the Club calendar. Playing at the weekendWe hope that you will find our Club a friendly place to play golf. We encourage members to mix, and hope that by not 'fixing-up' in advance on Saturday and Sunday mornings in particular you will quickly get involved in Club life. At weekends, when there isn’t a competition being played, members will often gather in the Clubhouse for coffee from 07.30 and then make up their four-balls before teeing off from the 1st and (if it’s busy) the 10th tees. Players who don’t wish to make such an early start will usually meet from 11.00 am (seasonal dependent) ready to play once the first groups are completing their rounds. CompetitionsFor knock-out competitions, a notice is put up in the locker-room and advertised on line inviting Full members to sign-up for each event. After the closing-date for entries, a draw is made and published on the same notice board. For One-Day Competitions, including the Monthly Medals, sign up is carried out on the Members website (Member’s Hub) two weeks before the event. These events have start-times for both the 1st and the 10th tees. For singles competitions there are 3 players per slot. The times range from 08.00 to about 09.30. You can play in the afternoon, without having to sign up, but check with the Professional for further details. Ladies can book into play on the start sheet on Men’s competition days which provides equal access at the weekends, and men can do this on Tuesday mornings in ladies competitions. However if doing this you MUST play the same groups size and format of the competition you are amongst. Competition fees are paid at the Pro Shop. For Knockout Competitions this must be paid before you play your first round, or you shall be disqualification. For one-day competitions the entrance fee is again paid at the Pro's Shop, with the optional addition of a small fee for a ball-sweep. Other than for the Monthly Medals, for which the results are posted on the notice board in the locker-room, each competition ends with a short presentation. This takes place in the 'Members' Bar at 18.30 on the evening of the event or the final. Everybody who plays in that competition is welcome to attend the celebration and help the competition sponsor toast the winners. PLAYING AT MALDEN GOLF CLUB7

If you cannot play in the Saturday Monthly Medals there are Mid-Week Medals which are held on a Wednesday each month. The dates for these are in the Club Diary, and the Pro Shop will have more details. These are very useful events for handicap purposes. Club MatchesIn the spring, members are invited to sign up for Inter-Club matches. A notice goes up on the board giving details of the opposition and the dates. You can sign up for as many matches as you like, and hopefully everyone will get a match somewhere. Our matches are played on a home and away basis, quite often for a trophy. If you play in one ‘leg’ you usually get invited to play in the return. The matches also include a ‘sit-down’ meal afterwards which is covered by the match-fee. The Roll-UpThis is an excellent way of meeting other members of the Club. It takes place on Tuesdays throughout the summer, usually from about 16.30 to 18.00. It is open to all members and played over 9 holes, with only 1 shot per hole for handicap. There is a small entry fee to cover prizes, and there are hot snacks on sale in the Bar area which should be pre ordered before play. Play is usually in 4’s, with a draw for partners on the 1st tee. Other Roll UpsThere are a number of extra casual roll ups throughout the week Mon-Sun at various times. No roll up has a booking or priority over anybody else who is looking to play. But if you are looking for a game you will be able to join these groups. Our Club Professional is happy to advise on the best group to join and the various timings. Club DaysThe Club also organises some major golfing days during the year that are open to all members, such as Members Invitation Days, Am-Ams and other Open Events. We hold an annual Charity Golf Day in July which raises money to support several local community projects. If you need any further information about the Club, and what is going on, our Club General Manager David Boyce, Administration Secretary Ann Beard in the Club office or our Golf Professional Ben Tebbs in the Professional’s Shop are always happy to answer any questions you may have.8

An important feature of the golfing tradition at Malden is not having to book a tee time to play social golf. Throughout the week, there are numerous opportunities to simply ‘roll up’ and get a game. This is a huge benefit to Members and a valuable attraction for new Members. If you’re looking for a game and would like to either fix-up and enjoy a social round of golf or participate in a draw for partners which offers a little more of a competitive edge, these are the best times to get to the Club when there isn’t a competition or organised event taking place. ‘FIX-UP’ TO PLAY IN A FOURBALL Come into the bar, help yourself to coffee and find out who is looking to make-up a four. Weekends, Saturday and Sunday morning from 7.30 – 8.15 am ‘ROLL-UP’ FOR A DRAW FOR PLAYING PARTNERS Join the group in the bar and ask if you can take-part in the roll-up. You are welcome to join in with any of these groups but if you’re unsure about who to approach just ask Ben or David in our Pro Shop and they’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. It is also worth noting that we are a golf club for all our Members. The roll-up groups do not have a pre-booked start time or priority access to the first or tenth tees and will always integrate with other Members wishing to play at the same time. We operate a ball chute system for the first tee and everyone is encouraged to put a ball in to signify when it’s their turn to be on the tee (all players in your group must be ready to play either on the tee or on the putting green before you place your ball in the chute). From time to time, the golf course may be closed or booked for an event and therefore the roll-up groups will move to a different time. Events and closures are advertised on the Club Diary (which can be found in the Member’s Hub on our website) so it’s always worth check-ing if you’re planning to play. There are, of course, other times during the week when Members arrive to be fixed-up into a group and whilst these are not regular roll-ups, it is still possible to get a gameSo, whatever your requirements, please speak with the Pro Shop staff to find out more about arranging a game with other Members. 12

HOW TO APPLY TO BECOME A MEMBER In completing the application form, you should be aware of a number of points re-garding our policy for accepting membership applications: All membership applications should be proposed and seconded by a current playing member of the club. If you do not have a proposer or seconder from the Club, applications should be sup-ported by a letter of recommendation from any golf club of which you were or are a member. If you have not been a member of a golf club before, we would ask you to provide the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two character references who you would be happy for the Club to contact. Your referees may be an employer, a repre-sentative of an established organisation that you have been involved with or a per-son with a recognisable status within the community. As long as you can satisfy the application criteria, you will then be invited to the Club to be interviewed by two members of the General Committee. This provides us with the opportunity to find out a little more about you, learn about your interest in golf, explain what the Club has to offer and answer any questions you may have. If you do not have a proposer or seconder from Malden Golf Club, or do not have a recognised handicap, we will also ask you to play nine holes with a member of the General Committee or our Golf Professional before we make a formal offer of mem-bership. While this is usually just a formality, it does offer us a chance to assess your golfing ability, knowledge of golfing etiquette and further introduce you to the Club. Once we have made you a formal offer of membership, playing rights will com-mence when you have paid the one-off entry fee and the subscription for the re-mainder of our financial year that runs up to 31st May (please see the cost break-down of these costs on page 8). For details of payment options please contact the Club’s office here. 15
