GREETINGS FROM OUR EPISCOPAL LEADERS: “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NRSVue Greetings to our Beloved in Christ and Zion; The Judean exiles in Babylon found themselves attempting to navigate their lives and their faith in a strange place, spiritually perplexed and facing significant problems. For many, the future appeared frightening. Some became discouraged, while others were deceived by “Name it, Claim it” prophets promising them simple solutions to their challenges. Sound familiar? Jeremiah advises them to trust GOD’s plans for their lives and adjust to the new circumstances with confidence. He warns them about false prophets and manipulators who take advantage of their fears. The message he proclaimed was that in spite of appearances, the promises of GOD allowed them to move into their future with hope. One of the most overused phrases these days is, “we are living in unprecedented times.” However, just because it’s overused doesn’t make it untrue. At least during our lifetimes, we’ve not experienced the combination of challenges we face as individuals, as a nation, and as the Church. Living and leading through such seismic shifts has presented church leaders with significant difficulties, yet we also have some amazing opportunities. Change is hard, but change is necessary. Our 2023 MAED Leadership Training Institute 2023 will focus on the theme: “The Freedom Church: A Movement Empowered By The Holy Spirit; Securing Our Future.” Each one of the presenters and workshops were prayerfully and intentionally selected to enable us as leaders, clergy, and lay, to navigate these uncertain times with a certain hope in GOD’s promise for our future. We are confident that healthy, Spirit-filled leaders and congregations who live and demonstrate the love of Jesus will be used by GOD to offer a greater Christian witness, develop mature Christian Disciples, cultivate stronger fellowship, and be empowered for ministry in a rapidly changing world. Please join us in expressing gratitude to our very capable Dean, Rev. Dr. Evalina Huggins, Mr. Domo Turner and Rev. Dr. Timothy Freeman, our Co-Deans, the MAED Presiding Elders, and the incredible LTI Planning Team who have worked tirelessly to ensure that we have an impactful gathering. My wife and I enthusiastically welcome you to expect the unexpected and celebrate Christ together during this gathering. May you be equipped for greater leadership and may your passion for Jesus and His church be reignited as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit and our future is secured. Blessings and Love Always! Your Episcopal Servants, Bishop and Mrs. W. Darin Moore October 12, 2023

Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III Plenary Presenter and Preacher Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Ill., Dr. Otis Moss III, is a preacher, activist, and author. Over the last two decades, Dr. Moss has practiced and preached a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality. A third-generation warrior for civil and human rights, Dr. Moss is committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. These very touchstones are taken up in his latest book project, Dancing in the Darkness: Spiritual Lessons for Thriving in Turbulent Times, released in November 2022. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Moss is an honors graduate of Morehouse College and earned a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary. Dr. Moss has a passion for preaching and exercises his homiletical muscle as a professor of homiletics at McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University. In this role, Dr. Moss is positioned to help up-and-coming preachers build and strengthen their own preaching ministries. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the pastoral ministry of his father, Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, are fundamental in his spiritual formation.

Patrick Barrett, II The Church’s message is predicated upon HOPE. As we chart our course for the future, what must we retrieve, retain, release, or recycle in order to reach the masses and move the Church forward? 3) “Growing A Healthy Congregation Reaching A Hurting Community” Presenter: Rev. Alyce Walker Johnson It is possible for a church to get out of alignment and balance. We tend to either prioritize outreach and evangelism or mainly focus inwardly on discipleship and fellowship. However, a spiritually healthy and growing congregation will be intentional and passionate about both. 4) “Small Group Ministry: Rethinking and Reenergizing Our Class Leader Ministry” Presenter: PE Scot C. Moore John Wesley intended for the Class Leaders System to foster the spiritual development of those who called themselves Methodist. Julius Walls (AME Zion Chief Operating Officer) The socio-economic realities of local churches have shifted in the wake of COVID-19, while the demands for holistic ministries have increased. What additional or different forms of revenue can support the church’s ongoing mission and ministries? 2) “Reaching and Reclaiming Our Young Men” Presenters: Rev. Milton A. Williams, Mr. Reginald Chandler, Jr., Rev. Dexter Feely, Rev. David T. George William Smith-Whitfield and Ms. Pamela Valentine A vital, growing church requires being intentional about reaching youth and young adults while also valuing our senior members. While many focus on one demographic and neglect the other, this workshop will explore how we connect with the younger and value the older. 4)“The Church in a Post-Christian Culture” Presenter: PE William Hogans The Church now faces a post-modern, post-Christian culture. This means the future church will have to stand as an alternative to the culture, not an echo of it. Cool won’t cut it, hype won’t cut it, and imitating the culture is not the answer. Real biblical truths are the answer. 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. 2023 Leadership Training Fellowship Luncheon Celebrating Our Episcopal District Support Team Open to All Registered Attendees 1:45 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Devotional Period – Rev. HYMNS HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 1. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty. Early in the morning, our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy; Merciful and mighty God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. 2. Holy, holy, holy, All the saints adore thee. Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea. Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee; which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. 3. Holy, holy, holy, Though the darkness hide thee. Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see. Only thou art holy, there is none beside thee; Perfect in power, in love, and purity. 4. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty. All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy; Merciful and mighty God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS NAME 1. All hail the power of Jesus’ Name! Let angels prostrate fall; Let angels prostrate fall. Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him, crown Him. Crown Him, crown Him, crown him, and crown Him Lord of all! 2. Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race, Ye ransomed from the fall; Ye ransomed from the fall. Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, And crown Him, crown Him. Crown Him, crown Him, crown him, and crown Him Lord of all! 3. Let every kindred, every tribe, On this terrestrial ball, On this terrestrial ball. To Him all majesty ascribe, And crown Him, crown Him. Crown Him, crown Him, crown him, and crown Him Lord of all! 4. Oh, that with yonder sacred throng, We at His feet may fall; we at His feet may fall. We’ll join the everlasting song, And crown Him, crown Him. Crown Him, crown Him, crown him, and crown Him Lord of all!

HE’S SWEET I KNOW He's sweet, I know, He's sweet, I know. Storm clouds may rise, strong winds may blow… But I’ll tell the world, wherever I go… That I found a Savior, And He's sweet, I know. (repeat) GUIDE ME O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH 1. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more. Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more 2. Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing waters flow. Let the cloudy fiery pillar, lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield Strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield 3. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fear subside. Death of death and hell’s destruction land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee. Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee. WE OFFER CHRIST TO YOU We offer Christ to you, oh my brother. We offer Christ to you, oh my sister. He will give you a brand new life. New life abundantly Oh, come, come on to Christ. Come, ye who are weary and heavy-laden Oh come, come on, To Christ, To Christ

ORDINATION HYMN “I Am Thine, O Lord” 1. I am thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice, and it told thy love to me; but I long to rise in the arms of faith and be closer drawn to thee. 2. Consecrate me now to thy service Lord, by the power of grace divine; let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, and my will be lost in thine. 3. O, the pure delight of a single hour that before thy throne I spend, When I kneel in prayer, and with thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend! 4. There are depths of love that I cannot know till I cross the narrow sea; There are heights of joy that I may not reach till I rest in peace with thee. Refrain: Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died. Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

SERVICE OF ORDINATION THE PRESENTATION OF PERSON TO BE ORDAINED DEACONS Bishop W. Darin Moore, Presiding ORDER OF DEACONS - Rev. Dr. Joseph Lamb and Dr. Alvin T. Durant. The Elders shall present unto the Bishop the Persons to be ordained Deacons, their names being read aloud. Bishop W. Darin Moore: Brothers and Sisters: If there be any of you who know of any crime or impediment in any of these persons presented to be ordained Deacons, for which they should not be admitted to this Office, come forth in the name of God, and show what the crime or impediment is. THE COLLECT Rev. Dr. Audie V. Simon Almighty God, who by your divine providence has appointed various Orders of Ministers in your Church, and did inspire your Apostles to choose into the Order of Deacons your first martyr, St. Stephen, with others: mercifully behold these your servants now called to the same Office and Administration; replenish them so with the truth of your doctrine, and adorn them with innocence of life, that both by word and good example they may faithfully serve you in this office, to the glory of your name and the edification of your Church, through the merits of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost now and forever. THE EPISTLE 1 Timothy 3:8-13 (NRSV) Rev. T. Kenneth Venable Deacons, likewise, must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money; they must hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. And let them first be tested; then, if they prove themselves blameless, let them serve as deacons. Women likewise must be serious, not slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be faithful to one spouse, and let them manage their children and their households; for those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Page 26

Then the Bishop shall examine every one of those to be ordained, in the presence of the People, after the following manner: Bishop: Do you trust that you are inwardly moved by the Holy Spirit to take up the Office of the Ministry of Deacon in the Church of Christ, to serve God for the promoting of His glory and the edifying of His people? Answer: I trust so. Bishop: Do you inexhaustibly believe the entire Canon Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments? Answer: I do believe them. Bishop: Will you diligently read or expound the same to the people whom you shall be appointed to serve? Answer: I will. Bishop: It is the responsibility to the Office of a Deacon to assist the Elder in divine services. And especially when ministering the Holy Communion, to help in the distribution thereof, and to read and expound the Holy Scriptures, to instruct the youth, and to baptize. And furthermore, it is your office to search for the sick, poor, and impotent, that they may be visited and relieved. Will you do this gladly and willingly? Answer: I will do so, by the help of God. Bishop: Will you apply all your diligence to form and model your own lives and the lives of your families, according to the doctrine of Christ; and to make yourselves, with all that is within you, wholesome examples of the flock of Christ? Answer: I will do so, the Lord being my helper. Bishop: Will you reverently obey those to whom the charge and government over you is committed, following with a glad mind and will, their godly admonitions? Answer: I will endeavor to do so, the Lord being my helper.

Page 27

Then the Bishop, laying his hands severally upon the head of each of them, shall say: Take the authority to execute the Office of Deacon in the Church of God: in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Then shall the Bishop deliver to each of them the Holy Bible, saying: Take thou authority to read the Holy Scriptures in the Church of God and to preach the same. COLLECT Rev. Dr. Myrtle Bowen Almighty God, giver of all good things who of your great goodness has promised to accept and take these your servants into the Office of Deacons in your Church; make them, we ask you, Oh Lord, to be modest, humble, and constant in their ministration, and to have a ready will to observe all spiritual discipline; that they, having always the testimony of a good conscience, and continuing ever stable and strong in your Son Christ, may so well behave themselves in this inferior office that they may be found worthy to be called into the higher Ministries in the Church, through the same, your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ; to whom be glory and honor, world without end. Amen. COLLECT Rev. Kenneth W. Crowder Guide us, O Lord, in all our doings, with your most gracious favor, and further us with your continued help; that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally, by your mercy, obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SERVICE OF ORDINATION THE PRESENTATION OF PERSONS TO BE ORDAINED ELDERS ORDER OF ELDERS - Rev. Dr. Joseph Lamb and Dr. Alvin T. Durant. The Elders shall present unto the Bishop the Persons to be ordained Elders, their names being read aloud. I PRESENT unto you these persons to be ordained Elders: Bishop Moore: Brothers and Sisters, we present unto you, these whom we intend, by the help of God this day, to ordain Elders. For after due examination, we find not to the contrary, that they are lawfully called to this function and ministry, and are persons fit for the same. If, however, there be any crime or impediment in any of them, for which they ought not be received into this holy Ministry, let the accuser come forward in the name of God and show what the crime or impediment is. [If any crime or impediment be presented, the bishop shall cease from ordaining that person until such time as the party accused shall be found clear of the same.] Then shall be said the Collect, Epistle, and Gospel as follows: THE COLLECT Rev. Dr. William E. Kelly Almighty God, giver of all good things, who by the Holy Spirit has appointed various Orders of Ministers in your Church, mercifully behold these your servants now called to the Office of Elders, and so replenish them with the truth of the doctrine, and adorn them with the innocence of life, that both by word and good examples they may faithfully serve you in this office, to the honor and glory of your name and the edification of your Church through the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, world without end. AMEN. After which the Bishop shall say unto them as follows: You have heard, Brothers and Sisters, in your private examination, and in the holy lessons taken out of the Gospel and the writings of the Apostles, of what dignity and of how great importance this Office is into which you are called. And now again we exhort you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that you have in remembrance inquired into how high a dignity and to how

Page 29

weighty an Office you are called: that is to say, to be messengers, watchmen, and stewards of the Lord, to teach and forewarn, to feed and provide for the Lord's family, to gather the outcast, to seek the lost, and to be ever ready to spread abroad the Gospel, the glad tidings of reconciliation with God. Have always, therefore, printed in your remembrance how great a treasure is committed to your charge. For they are the Sheep of Christ, which He bought with His life, and for whom He shed His blood. The Church whom you must serve is His spouse and His body. And if it shall happen the same Church or any member thereof, do take any hurt or hindrance by reason of your negligence, you know the greatness of the fault and also the horrible punishment that will ensue. Therefore consider the end of the ministry toward the children of God, toward the spouse and body of Christ; and see that you never cease your labor, your care, and diligence, until you have done all that lies in you, according to your bounden duty, to bring all such as are or shall be committed to your charge unto that agreement in the faith and knowledge of God, and to that ripeness and perfectness of age in Christ, that there be no place left among you, either for error in religion or for viciousness in life. Rev. Scot C. Moore For as much then as your Office is both of so great excellency and of so great difficulty, you see with how great care and study you ought to apply yourselves, as well that you may show yourselves dutiful and thankful unto the Lord who has placed you in so high a dignity; as also to beware that neither you yourselves offend nor be occasion that others offend. Furthermore, you cannot have a mind and will of your own; for that will and ability is only given from God. Therefore, you have a need to pray earnestly for His Holy Spirit. And seeing that you cannot by any other means fully understand the full extent of doing so weighty a work, pertaining to the salvation of man, but with doctrine and exhortation taken out of the Holy Scriptures, and with a life agreeable to the same, consider how time you should spend in studying, reading or learning the Scriptures. And further, in determining these things, you must also determine with all of your ability, both regarding you and those especially committed to you, according to the rule of the Scriptures, how to forsake and set aside, all worldly cares and studies.

Page 30

Rev. Dr. Evalina Huggins We hope that you have all weighed and pondered these things with yourselves long before this time and that you have clearly determined, by God's grace, to give yourselves wholly unto this Office, with which it has pleased God to call you; so that as much as lies within you, you will apply yourselves wholly to this thing, and draw all your cares and studies this way. And that you will continually pray to God the Father, by the mediation of our only Savior Jesus Christ, for the heavenly assistance of the Holy Ghost; that by daily reading and weighing of the Scriptures, you may grow riper and stronger in your ministry. And further, that you may so endeavor to sanctify the lives of you and those you serve, in order to fashion them after the rule and doctrine of Christ, be wholesome and godly examples and models for the people to follow Bishop: And now, that this congregation of Christians here may also understand your minds and wills in these things, and that your promise may persuade you to do your duties even more, you shall answer plainly to these things which we in the name of God and His Church shall demand of you touching the same. Do you think in your heart that you are truly called, according to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the order of Elders? Answer: I think so. Bishop: Are you persuaded that the Holy Scriptures contain sufficiently all doctrine required of necessity for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? And that you are determined out of said Scriptures to instruct the people committed to your charge to teach them nothing as required of necessity to eternal salvation but that which you shall be persuaded that may also be concluded and proved by the same? Answer: I am so persuaded and have so determined by God's Grace. Bishop: Will you then give your faithful diligence always so to minister the Doctrine and Sacraments and Discipline of Christ as the Lord has commanded? Answer: I will do so, by the help of the Lord.

Page 31

Bishop: Will you be ready with all faithful diligence to banish and drive away all erroneous and strange doctrines contrary to God's Word? And will you use both public and private admonitions and exhortations to the sick, as well as to everyone within your charge, as need shall require and occasion shall be given? Answer: I will, the Lord being my Helper Bishop: Will you be diligent in praying and in reading the Holy Scriptures, and in such studies which will further provide the knowledge of the same, laying aside the study of the world and the flesh? Answer: I will endeavor to do so, the Lord being my Helper. Bishop: Will you be diligent to frame and fashion yourselves and your families according to the doctrine of Christ: and to make both yourselves and them, with all that is within you, wholesome examples and models to the people of Christ? Answer: I will apply myself to these things, the Lord being my Helper. Bishop: Will you maintain and set forward, with all that is within you, quietness, peace, and love among all Christian people and especially among them that are or shall be committed to your charge? Answer: I will so do, the Lord being my Helper. Bishop: Will you reverently obey your chief Ministers, who have been committed the charge and government over you? And will you follow with a glad mind and will their godly admonitions, and submit yourselves to their godly judgment? Answer: I will do so, the Lord being my Helper Then the Bishop shall say: Almighty God, who has given you this will to do all these things, also grant you strength and power to perform the same; that He may accomplish His work which He has begun in you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

After which shall be said by the Bishop (the persons to be ordained Elders all kneeling), the Bishop beginning and the Elders and others that are present answering, as follows: Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire. And lighten with celestial fire. Thou anointing Spirit art, Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart. Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soiled face With the abundance of thy grace. Keep far our foes, give peace at home: Where thou art Guide no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son And thee of both to be but ONE: That through the ages, all along, This may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Bishop: Let us pray: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of your infinite love and goodness toward us have given to us your only and most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ to be our Redeemer and the author of everlasting life; who after He had made perfect our redemption by His death, and was ascended into heaven, sent abroad into the world His Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Teachers, and Pastors, by whose labor and ministry He gathered together a great flock in all parts of the world, to set forth the eternal praise of your Holy Name: for these so great benefits of your eternal goodness and for that you have promised to call these here present to the same Office and Ministry appointed for the salvation of mankind, we render unto you heartfelt thanks: we praise and worship you; and we humbly beseech you by the same, your blessed Son, to grant unto all who either here or elsewhere call upon your name, that we may continue to show ourselves thankful unto

Page 33

you for these and all of your many benefits, and that we may daily increase and go forward in the knowledge and faith of you and your Son, by the Holy Spirit. So that in your Ministers, may ever glorify you holy name, and cause your blessed kingdom to be enlarged, through the same, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the same Holy Spirit world without end. Amen. When the prayer is done the Bishop, with Elders present, shall lay their hands severally upon the head of every one that receiveth the Order of Elders, the Receivers humbly kneeling upon their knees. Bishop saying: The Lord pour upon you the Holy Ghost for the Office and work of an Elder in the Church of God, now committed unto you by the authority of the Church through the imposition of our hands. And be a faithful dispenser of the Word of God and of His holy Sacraments: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen Then the Bishop shall deliver to every one of them, kneeling, the Bible into his/her hands saying: Take thou authority as an Elder in the Church, to preach the Word of God and to administer the holy Sacraments in the Congregation. The Bishop shall say: Most Merciful Father, we ask you to send upon these your servants your heavenly blessings, that they may be clothed with righteousness, and that your word spoken by their mouths may have such success that it may never be spoken in vain. Grant also that we may have the grace to hear and receive what they shall deliver out of your most Holy Word, or agreeable to the same, and the means of our salvation; and that in all our words and deeds we may seek your glory and the increase of your kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Guide us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favor, and further us with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally by your mercy, obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Closing Hymn "Hold to God's Unchanging Hands" l . Time is filled with swift transition, naught on earth unmoved can stand, build your hopes on things eternal, hold to God's unchanging hand. 2. Trust in Him who will not leave you, whatsoever years may bring; if my earthly friends forsake me, still more closely to him cling. 3. Covet not this world's vain riches that so rapidly decay. Seek to gain the heavenly treasures, they will never pass away. 4. When your journey is completed, if to God you have been true, fair, and bright, the home in glory your enraptured soul will view. Refrain: Hold to his hands, God's unchanging hand; hold to his hands, God's unchanging hand; Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God's unchanging hand. Closing Remarks Bishop W.
