ANSEL ADAMS Waterfall Northern Cascades 1958 Gelatin silver photograph This photograph shows the Northern Cascades at the National Park in Washington USA from 1958 Adams captures the dynamism and relentless nature of flowing cascades while also staking a claim for their preservation which he has encapsulated in a timeless photograph When Chris Burden performed Velvet Water in 1974 it involved him submerging his head fully into water and attempting to breathe water During the performance he repeated Today I am going to breathe water which is the opposite of drowning because when you breathe water you believe water to be a richer thicker oxygen capable of sustaining life This performance resulted in him passing out which signalled the end of the recording 0 17 CHRIS BURDEN Velvet Water 1974 performance and video 0 18

water a colourless transparent odourless liquid that forms the seas lakes rivers and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms It is also crucial for our well being Survival instincts have been engrained in us on how to find and sustain ourselves with water as it will always be essential for the human body to function Therefore we have a very clear and set view of what water is which in all honestly sounds unbelievably boring I didn t want to move away from the basic form of water but wanted to experiment and see how I could use the same appearance and shape while changing its complete form into something magical and strange My piece consists of three edits of different photos of water layered on top of each other Without any change to the form or appearance I have been able to transform these photos into psychedelic textures and have changed the original viewpoint of what water is Seeing the bright colours that have occurred naturally via basic editing or even the different layers of water intertwining and creating new forms has now made me question is water really that boring colourless transparent odourless liquid Maybe we got it all wrong 0 21 0 22
