2 FROM THE DIRECTOR Lake Washington High School Theatre acknowledges that the Southern Salish Sea region lies on the unceded and ancestral land of the Coast Salish Peoples: the Duwamish, Muckleshoot, Puyallup, Skykomish, Snoqualmie, Snohomish, Suquamish and Tulalip tribes and other tribes of the Puget Sound Salish people. The present day city of Kirkland is in the traditional heartland of the Lake People and the River People. We honor, with gratitude, the land itself, the First People—who have reserved treaty rights and continue to live here since time immemorial—and their ancestral heritage. LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT In 2003, Once Upon a Mattress was the last show I directed as a High School Drama teacher. It brings up so many fond memories of students from long ago before I reinvented myself as a technician. It’s remained a favorite show all these years. I love how it provides the opportunity for so many actors to have their own moment to shine. The music is great. The story is so much fun. On the technical side, there is that iconic bed which is a really fun thing to create. Going back to do it again has been a great experience. The set you see on stage is a loving homage to the original set we built 22 years ago, it actually includes one piece from the original set. While it is a little different, the original set inspired every choice of this set’s de-sign. It’s been especially fun going through old pictures and chatting with my former student carpenter about how we built things originally. I hope you enjoy this show and it builds great memories for you and every-one involved. To my former students, I hope seeing the world again takes you back to those warm fuzzy memories the way it has for me. Mark Staiff Tech Director, Performing Arts Center Manager FROM THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR Welcome, everyone, and thank you for joining us for our production of Once Upon a Mattress! This beloved tale, inspired by the classic fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea,” has entertained generations — but this version comes with a few delightful twists! Composer Mary Rodgers infused this modern story with a timeless, catchy sound, and the result is a playful and progressive musical that turns expectations up-side down. It explores what it truly means to be a princess, a man, and a woman, of-fering a refreshingly bold perspective for its time. In a world where many classic shows can feel a bit out of touch, Once Upon a Mattress remains refreshingly relevant. With sharp humor, clever commentary, and a playful poke at outdated norms, this musical continues to resonate. And let's not forget: who doesn't love a good tap number? It’s pure, joyful fun! I’ve been hearing about this show since I joined LWHS in 2017, when I first met Mark Staiff. It’s been his favorite musical ever since. Every year, he’d say, "What about Once Upon a Mattress?" And this year, I finally said, "Yes!" And I’m so glad I did. The students have truly made this production shine. Their creativity, enthusiasm, and hard work have made the rehearsal process smooth and the final product incredible. We've been able to give students opportunities to step into more leadership roles — from assistant directing, producing and choreography to set painting. And of course we have our student leaders backstage, in the booth, and in the orchestra pit. Even the actors themselves have added their own hilarious jokes and fun “bits,” making this a true team effort. It's been an absolute blast! Of course, none of this would be possible without our incredible team: Paul (music), Laura (dance), Mark and Armin (tech), and our amazing parent boosters. Eve-ry show is a new adventure, and this one has been one of the most enjoyable by far. Thank you all for being here to support us. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! Morgan Heetbrink Director, Theatre Club Advisor "[Art] is an agent of change…A film, a piece of theater, a piece of music, or a book can make a difference. It can change the world" -Alan Rickman

Ensemble MUSICAL NUMBERS Our story begins in a faraway kingdom long ago. Due to an unhappy curse, King Sex-timus is unable to speak. Meanwhile, his terror-of-a-wife, Queen Aggravain, has taken over control of the kingdom. Most importantly, in an attempt to keep Prince Dauntless single, she has decreed that only a princess who can pass her test may marry her son. Furthermore, no one else in the kingdom may marry until Prince Dauntless does. Lady Larken and Sir Harry are extremely disturbed by this fact since Lady Larken is now pregnant with Sir Harry's baby. Luckily, Sir Harry is able to find an amazing princess, Winnifred the Woebegone. She instantly catches the attention of Prince Dauntless and maybe she might be able to pass the Queen's supposedly impassable sensitivity test. Will the Queen still prevent Prince Dauntless from marrying? And what of the mute King? Will his curse be broken and how? Will he ever speak again? PLAY SYNOPSIS
