Life and Death of Beethoven

>Beethoven’s House of birth located on 515 Bonngasse [Picture was drawn R. Beissel in 1889, about 58 years after Beethoven died]

-Beethoven was born in the attic room of the family house. He had a very difficult life as a child. He died in Vienna, Austria of March 26, 1827 at age 56 because of a post-hepatitic cirrhosis of the liver. This autopsy provided clues to the origins of his deafness as well.

-His father, Johann van Beethoven, was a musician and a heavy drinker and treated him harshly. His mother, Maria Magdalena Keverich, was kind but did not mitigate her father’s behavior. He also had two younger siblings. Though Beethoven never married or had children, it is said that he had sent a plethora of letters to a diplomat’s daughter, Antonie Brentano.

  • -He worked as a composer, a violinist, a pianist, a songwriter and a lyricist.

Music Story

>Ludwig van Beethoven’s grandfather, Ludwig van Beethoven

-He inherited his grandfather’s [Ludwig van Beethoven] talent and started composing by the time he was twelve. His first work at  age 11, published in 1782, was named 9 Variations in C minor on piano on a march by Earnst Christoph Dressler, WoO 63. His teacher in those years was Christian Gottlob Neefe.

-He studied piano with the famous composer Haydn, vocal composition with Antonio Salieri, and counterpoint with Johann Albrechtsberger.

Facts about Beethoven

-Beethoven started to lose his hearing around 1801. The cause of his deafness is unknown, but there are many theories of it being syphilis, lead poisoning, typhus, or even his habit of sticking his head in cold to stay awake.

-Beethoven had been said to have a mental disease called bipolar disorder or manic-depression.

-Beethoven was best known for his nine symphonies, the Fifth and the Ninth Symphony in particular because of their grandeur. The bars of the Fifth Symphony are supposed to represent Fate knocking at the door.

-At age 7 ½  on March 26th, 1778 he gave his first public performance at Cologne.

-Beethoven’s father, taught him to play the piano and violin.

-It is said that Beethoven’s last words were “Plaudite, amici, comedia finita est”. (“Applaud, my friends, the comedy is over.”)

-By March 1783 his first teacher Neefe helped him compose his first published composition: a set of keyboard variations.
