Page 2

Weaving is a unique multi-sensory experience that ignites curiosity and imagination. It helps open the minds of the young at an early age by making them work with their hands and create using their minds. They achieve a sense of satisfaction through every finished piece of fabric they weave, thereby increasing their self-esteem.It not only grounds the mind but also allows the child to spend moments productively and away from disruptive forces – peers and technology. The program focuses on them doing, and in doing, the learning will happen.WHY WEAVING?

Page 3

We propose a mix of 3 different looms for this program, each with a different concept of weaving to give a variety to the students. They can choose the type of loom they want to work with. For a class of 30, the following looms are recommended:> 10 numbers Rigid Heddle looms> 10 numbers Inkle looms> 10 numbers Tapestry weaving framesINFRASTRUCTUREREQUREMENTS

Little Weavers program focuses on making the children work hands-on creating beautiful pieces of fabric. They choose colours, touch and feel the yarn and work independently on small hand looms to create objects of their desire.Age appropriateness: Grade 4 or 5THE PROGRAMThe students will be exposed to weaving on 3 different looms and choose to work with 1 loom of their choice with mentorship from the teacher, based on their interests and abilities. Each student will work independently on his/her loom for about 8-10 sessions spread over 3 months to complete their projects. The next batch of 30 students can use the same looms for the subsequent 3-month period. Four batches of 30 students each will be able to complete their projects in a given academic year.STRUCTURE

The program head will be the art teacher / class teacher and technical support will be provided by the supporting staff at the school. The weaving class will be conducted by the art teacher/ class teacher. The role of the teacher will be to assess and help the student choose the loom appropriate for the student, guiding him/her through the process of colour selection and weaving.Looms will be warped up by the supporting staff and kept ready so that the children can weave on the looms. Once the weaving project is completed, they will remove the fabrics from the loom and make the looms ready for the next batch.PROGRAMIMPLEMENTATION

We recommend a 2-tier training program:SUPPORT STAFF TRAININGDetailed training in setting up the looms with warps, weaving, removing the fabrics off the looms and mending will be provided. The supporting staff can warp up the looms for each batch and ensure smooth operation. They will also be trained in troubleshooting as well.We recommend that 3 supporting staff be trained so that each can handle one type of loom.Training period: 4 days x 4 hours each day per loom-typeThe teachers will be trained in the basic functioning and weaving on allthree looms and mentor the students to choose the looms appropriate for the students in consultation with them, guiding them through the process of colour selection and weaving.Training period: 4-5 daysTRAININGTEACHER TRAINING
