In a quiet forest, a tiny tree sproutedfrom the ground. It was the smallest tree in the wholeforest. All around it were big, tall trees withthick trunks and wide branches.Little Tree looked up at them andsighed. “I want to be tall like them,” it said.

g y ,the wind whispered. “But it takes time.”Each day, Little Tree tried hard. Itstretched its leaves toward thesun. It soaked up the rain. It heldon tight when the wind blewstrong.

But still, it stayed small.One day, a rabbit hopped by. “You’re very tiny,” said Rabbit.“Are you sure you’re a tree?”“I’m growing,” said Little Tree.

A few days later, a squirrel ranup a nearby tree. “You don’t have any branchesto climb,” Squirrel laughed.“I’m growing,” said Little Treeagain.

Winter came. Snow covered the forest. Little Tree felt cold and bare. It had no leaves left.It thought, Maybe I won’t growbig after all.But the ground held LittleTree’s roots.

The sun still rose. Deep below, water still reachedthe roots.When spring came, green budsappeared on Little Tree’sbranches. Tiny, but new.

Then came summer. The sun was warm. Rain fell often. Little Tree’s trunk got a littlethicker. A few small branches spreadout. Birds began to land on them.“Wow!” said the rabbit. “You’vegrown!”

“I have,” said Little Tree.Years passed. Little Tree grew taller. Its roots grew deeper. Now, children came to theforest and played in its shade.

One day, a new sproutpopped up near Little Tree’sroots.The little sprout looked up. “I want to be tall like you.”Little Tree smiled andwhispered, “You will. Just keepgrowing.”
