LISMORE COLLEGE Learning Support Centre The Learning Support Centre is at the heart of our new school and encapsulates the school ethos of Lismore College Lismore is a school for all We are very proud that Lismore College is representative of the entire community We warmly welcome students with a wide range of physical learning and health and wellbeing needs from feeder schools and schools from the wider community Every student is an individual and we strive to meet their individual needs with a tailored transition plan that allows each child to settle in at their own pace with the support of staff and parents Preparation is key to a smooth transition for our new students LSC staff collaborate with primary school teachers and SENCO s support agencies and health and social care staff to make sure we create the best environment for our students The students in the Learning Support Centre benefit from the excellent facilities of our new college in mainstream and within the centre In the centre our spacious classrooms have access to a support room with ICT facilities a quiet room and outside space In addition the learning support centre has a kitchen area and utility area to allow students to develop their life skills A hygiene room with hoist and shower facilities individual toilets and cloakrooms and a medical room are also provided for our students The curriculum is balanced to provide a range of learning experiences that includes social skills life skills and health and wellbeing Exercise and movement is part of our daily routine All students in Key Stage 3 have access to weekly swimming lessons in South Lake Leisure Centre in addition to PE lessons in school We use structured spelling and reading programmes as well as developing numeracy skills through interactive lessons and online Maths games Trips and days outs are organised throughout the year to celebrate the success of our students for example this year we are visiting the W5 Halloween Workshops the Christmas Pantomime in the Grand Opera House in Belfast and Emerald Park for the end of year trip Our Key Stage 3 students will progress to Key Stage 4 and will have access to a range of qualifications from entry level OCN level and GCSE depending on their interests and abilities This year we also have a group of students who have progressed to Post 16 and who are taught both within the centre and mainstream They have the consistency of the supportive environment trained staff and access to the broad and balanced curriculum available within mainstream subjects Year 8 student places in the Key Stage 3 Learning Support Class and the Key Stage 3 Autism Specific Class are identified by the Education Authority and parents are informed of places by the EA at the same time as mainstream students and families Individual appointments can be made through the school office to visit the LSC A School that supports learning In Lismore College we are committed to meeting the individual learning needs of all students and aim to create an environment where every student can succeed academically We recognise the important relationship between high quality pastoral support and academic achievement Our Learning Support Department comprising of the Learning Support Coordinator Specialist Teacher for assessment of access arrangements and a team of highly committed classroom assistant staff work in collaboration with our supportive parents carers and the expert services provided by a variety of external agency staff such as Autism Advisory Intervention Services Vision Sensory Support Education Psychology Behaviour Support Team EA Transition Officer and EA Careers Service All students on the additional needs register have an Individual Education Plan put in place with reasonable adjustments made as appropriate to ensure that our students can overcome their barriers to learning Our students can also receive additional support from our Learning Mentor who provides emotional and academic support as appropriate Page 14 My form teacher is so helpful and is always there to help me out I thought it would be so hard to move from primary school to secondary school but it wasn t Everyone is so helpful Milaj Year 8 Drumgor PS Page 15 Page 7

LISMORE COLLEGE Peer Mentoring Each Year 8 form class will also be assigned two Post 16 peer mentors who will meet with the students every morning during registration Our excellent student peer mentors demonstrate empathy and actively listen to our new year 8 students to ensure a smooth transition from primary to secondary school Their aims are Be role models for our younger students Help them to make happy and caring relationships Assist them on finding their way around the school Build their confidence and self esteem Be an active listener about any concerns they may have Encourage them to take part in extracurricular activities Help with the organisation of their books and equipment Transition Lismore recognises that the transition from primary school to secondary school is a significant stage in the social emotional and educational life of each of our students and their families To ensure a smooth transition we have forged excellent relationships with the local feeder primary schools We understand the importance of managing this transition effectively so that the students can enjoy and make amazing memories during their time in school We place great importance on supporting every Year 8 student as they settle into life at Lismore College Key Stages in our Transition Programme December P7 Taster days which give students the opportunity to visit our school participate in a range of practical activities in different subject areas and also get to meet some of our students and staff In January of P7 our senior staff will visit partner primary schools with past students to answer any questions the P7 students might have In June of the P7 year members of the Year 8 pastoral team will visit our partner primary schools to meet with the teachers of the students transferring to Lismore We are provided with comprehensive information about each student s academic progress and any pastoral concerns In June of the P7 year we also invite Year 8 students who have gained a place in Lismore College and their parents into school for an induction evening Parents carers and students will receive key information and have the opportunity to meet with the Year 8 pastoral team and senior staff This is also an opportunity to meet other students who will be starting their Lismore journey In August of Year 8 students enjoy a phased entry into school without large numbers of students in other year groups During this time in August they will complete a fun induction programme where the focus is on building positive relationships and getting to know their classmates There will also be a face to face parent tutor meeting for parents to inform the college about anything that can help make the transition smoother Mr Gary Brennan Key Stage 3 Vice Principal who oversees transition Page 20 My form teacher is always there for me and my class when we need her She helped us all settle in so quickly Lismore looks really big from the outside but it isn t that big when you are inside I love the football and Gaelic teams and they have helped me make a lot of new friends Moving from primary school was not bad at all Diarmuid Year 8 St Patrick s PS Aghacommon Page 21 Page 11

LISMORE COLLEGE Admissions Criteria In the case of pupils who have special circumstances the Board of Governors will determine the merits of individual cases and may offer a place without regard to the Admissions Criteria Written evidence will be required to support any such request and must be given on or attached to the Transfer Form In the event of the number of pupils applying for places in Year 8 in September being greater than the Admissions number the Board of Governors will apply the following criteria in the order set down below 1 Pupils whose Transfer Application expresses Lismore as a first preference and whose normal place of residence is within the Parish of Moyraverty or Seagoe or the traditional catchment postcode of BT65 2 Pupils whose Transfer Application expresses Lismore as a first preference and who are the oldest child or currently have older siblings in attendance at Lismore College 3 Pupils whose Transfer Application expresses Lismore as a first preference and attended one the traditional primary schools below St Anthony s PS St Francis PS Lurgan St John the Baptist PS Portadown Presentation PS Portadown St Patrick s PS Aghacommon St Colman s PS Laurencetown St Brendan s PS St Teresa s PS Lurgan St Patrick s PS Magheralin Ballyoran PS Portadown Tannaghmore PS Lurgan Tullygally PS Portadown Integrated PS St Mary s PS Derrytrasna Carrick PS Drumgor PS St Mary s PS Derrymore Bleary PS Lurgan Model PS St John s PS Gilford St Patrick s PS Derrynaseer 4 Pupils whose Transfer Application expresses Lismore as a first preference and whose parent guardian is an employee of the school or who has been appointed to take up a post in the school 5 All other applicants In the event of oversubscription within any of the above categories the following sub criteria will be applied 1 Pupils whose Transfer Application expresses Lismore as a first preference and who are the oldest child or currently have older siblings in attendance at Lismore College 2 Pupils whose Transfer Application expresses Lismore as a first preference and who are the oldest child or have had siblings previously in attendance at Lismore College 3 Pupils whose Transfer Application expresses Lismore as a first preference and do not qualify in 1 or 2 above 4 Pupils whose Transfer application expresses a second preference for Lismore College 5 Pupils whose Transfer application expresses a third preference for Lismore College 6 Pupils whose Transfer application expresses a fourth preference for Lismore College 7 Pupils whose Transfer application expresses a fifth preference for Lismore College In the event that at any stage of the above sub criteria being applied there is more than one applicant for the final place priority will be determined according to application of a randomised computer selection of letters The use of the word sibling is defined as children who at the date of their application have a child of the family currently enrolled at the school The phrase child of the family covers children fostered adopted etc and avoids having to define all the various permutations of sibling Page 26 Photography Design by www coolforschoolcreative com I was the only one from my class to come to Lismore and didn t know anyone else I thought it was going to be hard to make new friends but it wasn t at all I have made lots of new friends I also thought I would get lost a lot but there are so many people to help you find your classes Jack Year 8 St Patrick s PS Magheralin
