SISTER SPOTLIGHT:ANDREA BAYSINTERVIEWED BY JORDAN SAMMARCO15This newsletter’s Sister Spotlight features Andrea Bays. She and I had theopportunity to meet and talk about her involvement with Alpha SigmaKappa, career journey, hobbies, and everything in between.

Page 17

Q: What is your hometown?A: I grew up in Las Vegas before moving to Winter Haven, Florida.Q: Can you share a moment or experience in your STEM journey that madeyou especially proud?A: Joining AΣK! Before becoming a Member, I felt like I hadn't been fullyinvolved in STEM as much as I would have liked, because a lot of people tend toexclude architecture. I've tried to join other clubs in the past, but AΣK was thefirst technical group to truly welcome me.Q: How do you balance your academic workload with your involvement inAΣK and other activities? You had perfect attendance to your Chapterevents last semester!A: Yes! I try to get as much work done as I can before I go to any AΣK event. Thatway, I can just be present at the event and not have to worry about anythingelse. I go to study hall a lot. It's really nice to hang out with all my Sisters and domy work together. It feels really motivating.Q: How did you become interested in architecture?A: I was at a career fair in middle school, and one thing about me is that I lovefree stuff. I was basically just there to collect all the free things from the booths. Isaw a booth where they were designing Jenga structures, and it looked fun, so Igot in line. I made a cool Jenga design, and they told me, “You should go intoarchitecture!” That was the first time I had ever thought about it. As I keptlooking into it, I realized that I like math, I like art… this sounds like a great fit!Q: Do you have a favorite project or topic you're currently working on?A: I really enjoy my classes on models and graphics. I like doing the drafting, where you use rulers to really make sure everything's perfect. I am kind of aperfectionist. But I've also been enjoying my free-hand class, where you’re notallowed to use rulers. You just do what you can with your hands to come up withsomething. It's not as structured. It’s fun to make an idea come to life.Q: What’s something about the field of architecture that most people don’tknow or would be surprised to learn?16SISTER SPOTLIGHT:ANDREA BAYS

Page 18

17A: For one, students have to buy their own materials, which can get quiteexpensive! In terms of career, it takes a really long time, around 8 years, to getinto architecture. For example, I am not going to get a bachelor's degree, I just gostraight into the master's program. Then you intern so that you can take the testto get your license. It’s sort of like the process of becoming a doctor or lawyer, where there is a set amount of school and then the specialization that follows.Q: Which type of architectural styles do you tend to gravitate towards?A: I like the simplicity of modern architecture. But if I were able to, I think Iwould like to incorporate Roman and Renaissance elements in my design. Likethe old cathedrals. I love the detail in them and how everything has an artisticfeel. Even the ceilings have their own artwork.SISTER SPOTLIGHT:ANDREA BAYSRight: One of Andrea’s pieces.Find more of her artwork onInstagram: @andrea.art0830Q: How do you unwind after a busyweek of classes and AΣKcommitments?A: Playing video games and readingbooks! I also do a lot of art. I loveacrylic painting.Q: I have to ask, what video gameshave you been playing?A: I've fallen more into the cozy onesrecently, like Stardew Valley andAnimal Crossing. I also playMinecraft, some Mario games, someaction games… anything goes!Q: What advice would you give tosomeone considering a career inarchitecture?A: It’s important to save up beforestarting school. Also, it’s important tohave the right mindset. There’s so...

Page 19

A continued: ... much hard work and so many all-nighters. You should feel likearchitecture is what you want to do, no matter what.Q: What are some of your career goals?A: I’d like to own my own architecture firm one day. Also, I want to create freehousing for people who need it, so they have a place to sleep, to have food, andto get clean. Q: What do you enjoy most about being a part of the AΣK community?A: Definitely the Siblinghood! I can go into Chapter, and we can start talkingabout anything, like how spring break was, how their math class is going. It’s sonice to be able to talk to everybody so openly.Q: What makes the Rho Chapter special, in your opinion?A: We're all very close. If on our Discord, someone says, “Hey, can anybodywatch my goldfish?”, there are multiple people replying, “I can!” This actuallyhappened the other day! (Shoutout to Cracker the goldfish!)Q: What is something that’s been lighting up your life recently?A: The day that I was initiated, my boyfriend and I got a kitten! I've really beenappreciating having him around.18SISTER SPOTLIGHT:ANDREA BAYSQ: Can I please know the kitten’s name?A: Charlie! (right)Q: What was your favorite AΣK event thatyou’ve attended?A: Galentine's Day! We had a gift exchange anddid crafts. It was really fun. We even ended updoing a competition to see who could do thelongest plank.Q: This has been so fun. Any last thoughtsbefore we say goodbye?A: I loved this chat! And shoutout to my twin,Chandini!
