LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 An Award Winning Year Someone once said that the only time you should ever look back is to see how far you ve come Never has a truer word been spoken A lot has happened in Limavady High School since September 2022 when our new Year 8s walked through those doors From the death of Queen Elizabeth II to the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla the intervening months have earned their rightful place in the history books of our wonderful school It has been a year of awards and I am so pleased that the commitment of all the staff pupils and the LHS community has justifiably been recognised not only at local regional but also at national level It all started back in mid October when I had the pleasure of attending the Royal British Legion awards ceremony The school received a Certificate of Appreciation for the generosity and support shown to the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal over so many years 4

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 hellos Mr Murdoch Vice Principal I am the Vice Principal Pastoral Care here in Limavady High School Prior to taking up my post here I spent 8 years as Head of Centre in Sunlea Educational Guidance Centre and 17 years in Ballee Community High School as Youth Tutor and Head of Key Stage 4 I feel incredibly privileged to have been given this opportunity in such a fantastic awardwinning school which I have discovered means so much to the people of the Roe Valley Having worked in my previous school for 8 years I felt quite nervous about the prospect of starting a new school I have also been referred to this year as a blow in as I am a born and bred Ballymena man However I have been given the warmest welcome by staff pupils and the people of Limavady It s hard to believe that I have been here for 8 months already but the highlights so far this year have to be the visit to our new Shared Campus by former US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and the beautiful poem of welcome which was written for me by 9H Although I am looking forward to the summer holidays I also can t wait to get back in September to continue my LHS journey Mrs Sarah Wilson Receptionist We were very pleased to welcome Mrs Sarah Wilson to our office team in the autumn term Sarah has been kept very busy in reception and we would like to thank her for doing such a great job 8

Page 12

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 Mrs Calvin Science and teacher in charge of Careers Education When I got my job in Limavady High I was delighted because it was a 10 minute drive from home rather than the 50 minute commute I had been doing before I couldn t believe my luck It was only when I started working here that I realised just how lucky I had been My fellow teachers in the Science department were lovely and committed to doing the best for the pupils Although there s been a few changes in personnel over the years new staff coming in have been every bit as lovely and easy to work with After a few years I took over responsibility for careers education in school which was a different challenge entirely Instead of helping pupils gain their qualifications the focus moved to helping them to understand and appreciate how those qualifications opened the doors to their future careers It always reminded me of teaching them how to do a dot to dot puzzle and hoping that they emerged with the correct picture at the end of it all My contribution was small compared to that of Mr Mornin Mrs Rosborough and Mr Murdoch and their predecessors and all credit to them for their hard work Apart from working with a great bunch of staff I have always enjoyed building relationships with the pupils I taught and love it when past pupils greet me when I m out and about Working with young people certainly kept me up to date with new trends and technology In that respect they definitely taught me more than I taught them My thanks to all those who kept me right on the workings of my Smartboard I couldn t have done it without you In fact I probably couldn t even have switched it on Being on Leadership allowed me to see the other side of school life It made me aware of the amount of time and effort which goes into the strategic planning which has made our school so successful and keeps it evolving to meet new challenges effectively As I retire or as I prefer undertake a change in direction I wish everyone in Limavady High all the best as the shared campus becomes operational Remember to look out for each other and move forward with mutual respect integrity and kindness 12

Page 13

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL Mr Marshall McAleese Building supervisor Everyone in the LHS school community would like thank Marshall for all of his work here over the past 20 years We wish him a long healthy and happy retirement It seemed that my twentieth year of being a building supervisor was the perfect time to hang up my school keys and start retirement I started my job in Limavady High School after a long time in retail and vaguely knew the other school caretaker Ian McIllmoyle I was soon to learn that Ian has a great sense of humour this was confirmed by the fact that he supports Leeds United and therefore has no idea about football I would say that the camaraderie is without doubt the best thing about working here It is true that I consider the staff of Limavady High School to be friends rather than just colleagues Even though my wife and I have been married for 47 years I can honestly say that the thing I am looking forward to most is spending more time with her and the rest of our family I will miss the banter in school but look forward to the challenge of keeping fit and staying active I know that if I get stuck on a crossword clue any lunchtime then Dee and Ian are only a phonecall away The staff of Limavady High are dedicated to what they do and I m sure the school will continue to go from strength to strength I know that I am leaving the building in good hands and wish everyone every success for the future Miss Shannon McDermott Receptionist At the start of September Mr Mornin and the office staff said farewell to Miss Shannon McDermott who is leaving to study at NWRC We wish her every success for the future and thank her for her contribution to LHS 13

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 Mr Robert McManus 1964 2023 Every pupil who has passed through the library of Limavady High School over the past 27 years will have been greeted by our librarian Robert McManus Robert had been a member of our school staff for 30 years so it was with great sadness that we learnt of his death at the start of June Robert had worked in the library until October when he had to leave due to poor health He officially retired from his post at the end of March Those of us who knew and worked with Robert will always remember him as a softly spoken man who had a quick wit and gentle sense of humour Robert had a love of all kinds of music and an eclectic mix of European and American rock could often be heard coming from his computer Kind and unassuming Robert was a listening ear who offered a calm environment to many pupils over the years Robert kept the library neat and tidy and was quick to point out when a pupil was not adhering to the library rules However this was always delivered with patience and fairness Robert was well known to pupils who attended the Homework club after school and enjoyed sharing a joke or two with them More than anything Robert was a friend to all A quiet gentleman Robert would have been surprised and amused by the outpouring of affection when he passed away He will be greatly missed Keith from Autism NI attended our Year 8 assembly to receive a cheque for 500 raised during a festive clothing day in December Well done to everyone who took part on the day 14

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL A Goodbye Message from our Head Boy After 7 years of my journey at Limavady High School I am gutted to say it s finally coming to an end When reflecting on how the last 7 years have been for me there is no way I will ever be able to truly put into words and explain what this amazing school has done for me but I m going to give it my best shot For me Limavady High School has become a way of life and has given me the opportunity to develop myself into the person that I am today If you had told me in Year 8 that I would have 9 GCSEs completed my A levels and had the privilege of being Head Boy I would never have believed you The past year especially will be something that I will never forget and it s safe to say that I ve had many once in a lifetime opportunities The year in which I had the sad but honoured role in taking part in an assembly to mark the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II to then having my last duty taking part in an assembly to celebrate the coronation of HM King Charles III it s certainly has been a year to remember When trying to pinpoint an overall highlight of the year it s definitely one that I ve had to think about When our school won Secondary School of the year it was without a doubt a very proud moment for the whole LHS family However for myself and Madison it sparked a series of interviews and moments in front of the camera Amongst those was a trip to Stormont along with Mr Mornin and JACK McCORKELL Mrs Rosborough After a tour with Alan Robinson MLA we were then treated to a three course meal to celebrate the monumental achievement of the school To represent the school in this way was something I will always remember A few months later we again had the honour to attend a reception hosted by Mayor Ivor Wallace with the LHS senior leadership in attendance In November it was not only a privilege but a humbling experience to stand alongside Madison and lay the school s poppy wreath on Remembrance Sunday It would be remiss of me not mention the school s own Service of Remembrance which our very own Mr Dallas takes the time to organise year after year Just being able to take part in this was another moment I will remember Over the last number of years Limavady High School along with our neighbours St Mary s have clearly led the way in Shared Education in Northern Ireland Such a unique project which is reflected in our stunning Shared Campus which is now 17

Page 18

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 very near completion I feel it s only right I acknowledge the endless work that Mr Mornin and Mrs Moore as well as those who have come before them have put in to ensuring that our partnership has been the success that it has been To meet and talk to people like the Permanent Secretary for Education and put forward the case for what is happening here in Limavady was a very easy but proud thing for me to be able to do With the different duties I completed based around the Shared Campus I think it s only fair to say that my highlight of the year was the day Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came to the two schools as part of Queens University s celebration of the shared campus To have the opportunity to talk to Secretary Clinton about shared education was amazing but to be able to present her with a piece of memorabilia on the stage topped off the event in a very special way Whilst I am gutted that I won t be at LHS to witness the opening of the final completed campus I wish the two schools all the best in the future and look forward to seeing what the future holds for shared education in Limavady Anyone who has ever completed A Levels will know that it is an extremely challenging year but having the guidance of my teachers throughout made things much easier To my ICT and Business teachers thank you for two years of patience and for all your hard work in guiding us to the grades that we deserved and of course the laughs we ve had on the way To our form tutors Mrs Calvin and Mrs Watkin thank you for all your help over the last two years and also to Mrs Mornin whose door in G6 has always been open for a few wise words of advice Finally I can t finish without singling out my history teacher Mr Linton He is a prime example of the many teachers in LHS who genuinely care and go out of their way to take the time to help their pupils Thank you for making History that bit more enjoyable and always having an open door anytime I needed I want to wish our new Head Boy and Head Girl Reece and Caitlyn all the best for the next twelve months I know you will keep the yellow trimmed blazer in safe hands and will have a fantastic year I cannot write this farewell without giving a few special mentions and thanks to the people who make this school what it is the teachers and other members of staff of LHS Firstly I would like to thank Mr Mornin for his words of advice and help throughout the last year I can honestly say that his door has always been open anytime that I have needed anything and for this I m most thankful To our very special Head of Year Mrs McCartney who has been there to help Madison and I throughout the year especially when organising the formal which was an amazing success On behalf of everyone in Year 14 thank you for being there for us we appreciate it greatly I will never forget the last seven years and I owe everything to this outstanding school for making me the person that I am today I will never forget where I have come from and will always be proud to say I was a member of the LHS family To Madison our deputies Abbie and Matthew and also our fantastic team of Senior Pupils it has been a privilege to represent LHS throughout the last year with you all From me it s a good bye but more importantly a THANK YOU Limavady High School will forever hold a special place in my heart JACK McCORKELL 18

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL Thursday 8 September will be a day that we all will remember with great sadness as we learned of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle On Sunday the 4 September I had the pleasure as guest of The Lord Lieutenant of County Londonderry Mrs Alison Millar to attend a service of thanksgiving at Christ Church in Limavady to celebrate the Queen s Platinum Jubilee little did we know that just a short number of days later we would be mourning her passing We are now on Day 7 of National Mourning and it is very clear that as a nation we are still trying to come to terms with what has happened In 2001 the Queen herself said that Grief is the price we pay for love The Queen was a remarkable lady as a young 25 year old she became the 40th and longest reigning British Monarch 27 million people watched her coronation she welcomed 15 Prime Ministers most recently on Tuesday of last week just two days before her passing met 14 Presidents of the United States of America met 7 Popes witnessed 18 General Elections and was the Head of State for 14 countries Not forgetting that she was a mother of 4 grandmother of 8 and a great grandmother of 12 In the context of our country she was a leading light for peace and reconciliation We can think back to her state visit to Ireland in 2011 and the huge impact this had on relations in this small part of the world Her majesty was a champion of education and an impeccable role model for not only children but for us all She has been a tremendous source of inspiration hope and joy across many generations One member of the public who was interviewed this week I feel described her so well he said she was a guiding light a moral code and provided a sense of what s right and wrong Everyone will remember the image of her Majesty sitting alone due to the pandemic at the funeral of her beloved husband Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh I heard a poem during the week which really did strike a chord with me She was our north south east and west She was our constant nation s best She served us for so many years Now our people are in tears We can be sad as she departs As we say goodbye with broken hearts But we can also know this day She s reunited with her strength and stay The purpose of this annual report is to inform everyone associated with the school of the events of the last school year to highlight the success and to refer to potential challenges which could have a detrimental impact on the quality of education provided for our students in the future After A Level and GCSE results arrived in the middle of August and the In Service training has ended my mind always shifts to Prize Day and of course this report and the message within it The message this year is a very simple one Service and Duty On 11 March 2020 the World Health Organisation declared SARS CoV 2 as a pandemic On 18 March the then First Minister of Northern Ireland announced that schools in Northern Ireland would close to pupils on 23 March Over the past two years our profession has been stretched and challenged under very difficult circumstances to ensure that learning and support for our students continued I remember speaking to the staff during this time and saying that we are all public servants and this is our time 23

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 to step up and step forward to support our community I have to say that I am immensely proud of everyone in the school teaching and non teaching who provided outstanding support for our pupils while trying to deal with their own circumstances and worries at home I am also proud to report that as a school we remained open every day to support our key worker and vulnerable children It was so pleasing to hear many politicians and members of the public acknowledge all key workers but especially our profession and the critical role it played during the pandemic I took time to review my report from 2019 I said back then politics is very topical at present may it be the Brexit debate our lack of devolved government It s becoming Groundhog Day when I talk about political instability and lack of resourcing for schools Well we are now in 2022 and we are still dealing with these challenges In 2019 the Northern Ireland Education Budget faced the highest spending cuts in the UK over the past decade 11 As I stand here today our education system continues to be heavily underfunded and is at breaking point We are also in the midst of millions of public sector workers taking strike actions due to pay conditions Surely if politicians are truly appreciative of the work and service of everyone who works in a school then these people who are driven by duty and service deserve to be renumerated appropriately that s teachers classroom assistants technicians administrative staff building supervisors cleaners and catering staff I don t want to dwell too much on the dire position we find ourselves in as this is a day for celebration What I will say however I will on behalf of the staff and pupils continue to advocate for appropriate funding Despite all these challenges which are outside of our control I can guarantee that Limavady High School will endeavour to continue to deliver a high quality educational experience for our students no matter what challenges we face I would say to all our public representatives from all parties please take notice of the dedication to service that Queen Elizabeth II had to her dying day Remember that you also have a responsibility and duty to serve us and support our schools in getting appropriate funding This can only be done with a functioning Executive and Assembly I do not intend to deliver a 25 minute report on the school s achievements in fine detail but merely to attempt to leave you with a flavour of where we are currently as a school serving this community Limavady High School has a very strong and clear Mission Statement which encapsulates what this school is about We believe that each individual is unique and valuable and we do our very best to provide a secure caring happy and yet challenging learning environment in which each person is encouraged to respect other people and develop to their maximum potential as members of the school and indeed the wider community We try to live by this Mission Statement on a daily basis firmly underpinned by Christian principles and Christian values Education in its literal sense means a drawing out It implies that something is already born naturally inside us which will develop in the present and serve us in the future This school in my view has a proven track record of encouraging and drawing out the talents that each and 24

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL Year 14 A Level Geography Trip to Italy October 2022 The Wolfhound2023 There is no better way to study Geography than to get out into the real world and experience the concepts first hand In October 2022 our A Level Geography class got the opportunity to travel to Italy s famous Amalfi Coast and Bay of Naples region to study first hand some of the topics they had covered in class including volcanoes coasts and tourism After an early AM rise and bus trip to Dublin everyone got checked in and boarded the flight to Naples Upon landing on Italian soil we were soon able to lose our jumpers and coats as the temperatures in Naples were significantly more pleasant at the end of October than we would be used to in Limavady Our first excursion was to explore Underground Naples which is a series of ancient architectural features dating back to the fourth century from the Neapolitan era which have now been built over We did encounter a bit of an issue in locating the entrance to the tour s starting point which was through a maze of back 42

Page 43

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL alleyways and despite following Google Maps we were still left scratching our heads Eventually with some local assistance we found the very well hidden entrance but there was a spanner in the work as the English speaking tour had departed We tailed along with the next tour enjoying the experience more so with our eyes as while the Italian language is lovely to listen to our level of understanding was quite minimal After our tour we headed to the hotel and got a chance to explore our lovely base of Sorrento squeezing in some time to taste the local gelato ice cream Day two was the highlight of the trip when we travelled to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii which was covered as a result of the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD The group were amazed at how advanced this civilisation were with fast food takeaways running water and public spa facilities all in operation in these ancient times Mrs Bingham in particular was in awe at some of the architectural features on display Following refreshments and a venture around the market to pick up souvenirs we headed to the source Vesuvius itself A testing hike in 25 C heat ensued but everyone made it to the top where we got to see the steaming crater of this active volcano as well as stunning views over the Bay of Naples Erin McAlister attempted to take the quick way down the mountain but after a couple of tumbles she decided walking was a better plan On our third day we travelled along the breath taking Amalfi Coast taking in scenes we were used to seeing only on postcards The journey along the windy coast road which dropped hundreds of metres into the Mediterranean Sea combined with some eccentric Italian driving certainly had our heart rates up though Erin Campbell Moore managed to snooze through the most of it with photographic evidence to prove this We stopped and spent a more relaxing day in the picturesque village of Amalfi where we had time to wonder the narrow streets picking up souvenirs and sampling some of the world famous Italian cuisine which did not disappoint Some of our group used their time to get a swim in the turquoise waters and top up their tans on the beach That evening the whole group went out to the most stunning Italian restaurant where we had a lovely group meal for our final night and reminisced about a fantastic trip Then we had our final day bags packed bus loaded ciao said and a quick stop off at Herculaneum another ancient city covered by the volcanic eruption en route to the airport We ended up spending more time in Naples airport than we had planned courtesy of a 7 hour delay but everyone remained in good spirits and the chat and craic got us all through a long long day A special mention must also go to Dee our ICT technician who got the short straw to collect us in the wee hours from Dublin airport to return home through torrential rain and roads that genuinely resembled rivers This trip to Italy was a fantastic experience for all involved and memories were made that will last a lifetime Mr McCarry 43

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL by not taking her to Hollywood as promised Returning to the speakeasy Blousey and the rest of Fat Sam s crew are unaware of Dandy Dan s intent for revenge After a slightly longer break than we would usually have December 2022 saw the return of our School Show and we were back with a bang or more of a SPLURGE Our pupils took to the stage with a fantastic production of Bugsy Malone Set in 1929 in New York the city is divided by gang warfare On one side Dandy Dan played by Daniel Ferris and his mob terrorise the district taking out those they turn against with their new splurge guns On the other side Dandy Dan s rival Fat Sam played by Ircot Amaglo runs his successful Grand Slam Speakeasy There he deals with business and enjoys the attentions of his girlfriend the seductive Tallulah played by Lucie Birney However Sam is jealous of Dandy Dan s gang as he still uses old fashioned custard pies to take out their victims When Fat Sam s gang is brutally splurged and his empire under severe threat he engages the help of Bugsy Malone played by Rachel Gault a smooth talking man about town While Bugsy simultaneously attempts to woo Blousey Brown played by Abigail Macdonald the new girl singer in town he helps Fat Sam steal a fresh delivery of splurge guns from Dandy Dan However Bugsy s efforts cost him his relationship with Blousey after he lets her down His mob burst into the speakeasy and chaos ensues Splurge custard pies and flour bombs fly across the bar As the pandemonium comes to a sticky end it emerges that Bugsy and Blousey have reconciled and there is finally peace between the two rival gangs With such a big cast and so many parts to fill Miss Kerr and Mrs Hylands were inundated with pupils wishing to be involved This is what makes the full school production so special pupils from across the year groups from Years 8 to 14 are able to come together and take part in something which gives them an opportunity to shine and be part of something fantastic All pupils who wished to be part of the show either on stage or behind the scenes are welcomed into the production We have some returning cast members from previous shows as well as pupils who had never been on stage before but saw this as an opportunity to try something new Miss Kerr and Mrs Hylands were beyond proud of the cast and crew After waiting so long to return to the stage they did not disappoint and played to two full houses They would also like to extend a huge thank you to the staff parents and friends who make taking on a production of this size possible It really is a family affair We cannot wait for the next one as it is clear that Limavady High School s got talent Mrs Hylands Miss Kerr Directors 53

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 Creative Arts week ART On Thursday 19th our Art Technician held a few printing workshops for Creative Arts Week The aim was to help Year 10 s decide on their choices for GCSE by giving them a little taster of what Art might be like in Year 11 and Year 12 Even though the weather was bad and road conditions were horrendous we still had a good turn out and the pupils were able to experiment with printing for the first half of the workshop They used found objects and different printing techniques to produce an experimental page in either warm or cool colours During the second half of the workshop they learnt a monoprinting technique Monoprinting can be especially exciting as you have the reveal and you never quite know what the results will be A positive experience was had by the pupils and it will hopefully have helped them make the decision to pursue art as a GCSE subject or perhaps even a career 64

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 12 15th October 2022 Silver Practice Expedition Students from Limavady High School began the 2022 expeditions in October with the Year 12 Silver Qualifying expedition This saw many students both males and females walking a demanding route through the Sperrin Mountains All expeditions representing the different Year Groups began again after Winter training in April 2023 The first expedition of the year saw Year 11 participants travelling to the Mourne Mountains to embark on a challenging two night stay walking on unfamiliar ground and hills on Wednesday 12th October 2022 This was the practice expedition prior to their final expedition which takes place in September 2023 For most this was their first time in the Mourne SILVER Mountains As the young people travelled in the minibus they were taken back by the breath taking views of the hills when the minibus made its way past Dundrum Bay with the beautiful coastline to their left and the mountain range directly ahead of them Once the tents were pitched and rucksacks were unpacked we got back in the minibus and travelled back into Newcastle Town where the students got themselves some dinner ranging from Pizzas to ice cream The practice expedition began on the Thursday morning 13th October and finished on Saturday 15th October Overall all participants were led supervised around the Mournes taking legs individually and as teams They learned new skills reading maps understanding contour lines more in depth and noticing feature points such as sheep pens which they maybe do not see in our local area Some participants found the walk challenging with steep hills and little sleep But most made it through to the Saturday and stand themselves in very good stead to complete the qualifying hike in September 2023 Mr Linton Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator 116

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme 2022 2023 The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a great way of getting young people to engage in teams work in challenging environments and achieve personal goals The global pandemic saw families having to stay isolated a lot of the time in their own homes and during the beginning with little to no access of fresh air and nice country walks There is no better way than to re engage young people with the great outdoors than the challenging and rewarding scheme that Prince Philip founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 which has since expanded to 144 nations Over the past two years the Award Scheme has grown in number The total number of students enrolled since 2021 now sits at 189 participants This means it is one of the largest extracurricular clubs in Limavady High School the dedication effort and achievement of young people making an impact in their community The social value of these hours is 4134 Limavady High School has been a great provider of this scheme for many decades and this proud history is something Mr Linton is very keen to continue The benefits of any child completing the Award Scheme is obvious to most but none more so than the students themselves Not many young people volunteer to complete a challenge which they find both mentally and physically demanding The participants who sign up to complete an award whether it is the Bronze Silver or Gold sign up to this and it almost always lives up to its difficult reputation But with great difficulties come the greatest sense of achievement Once a young person completes an award they realise the importance of consistency through the sections and how one can push through something they might deemed impossible at the time and finish what they started This year has been a special year with the introduction of some new traditions 2023 saw the debut of an annual Duke of Edinburgh Award Ceremony which ran on 16th March 2023 Over 170 guests were invited to the assembly hall and more than 60 students achieved an award on this occasion We would like to extend our thanks to Mr Linton and his entire Duke of Ed team for all of their efforts this year This year also saw one of our own participants achieve the role as a UK Duke of Edinburgh Ambassador Gurt This is an outstanding achievement of which we are very proud As a centre Limavady High School has provided 897 hours to the local community through participants volunteering We are immensely proud of 118

Page 119

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL Year 13 pupil Gurt applied for the 2023 2024 DofE UK Youth Ambassador Programme This year the DofE UK Ambassador Programme had a record number of applications which made the shortlisting hugely challenging not only due to volume but also the strength of applications received and GURT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL Congratulations Gurt has been taking part in the school DofE scheme completing Bronze and Silver He is also signed up to complete Gold Gurt commented I am so excited to take part in the scheme despite being on Study Leave I jumped on the first bus to school and literally sprinted to tell Mr Linton about my success I am speechless We are so proud of Gurt and wish him well in all his endeavours Youth Ambassador Programme 119

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL Minor B2 Coleraine and District Netball League The year 9 Netball team competed in the Minor B2 Coleraine and District Netball League this year in a pool against three other teams consisting of North Coast Integrated College Coleraine College and Loreto College North Coast Integrated College Tuesday 25th October 2022 LHS travelled to North Coast Integrated feeling very excited about their first match of the season The start of the match saw LHS players hesitate whilst getting used to the court after goal shooter Annalise Canning and goal attack Sophie Sinclair were blown up for shooting outside of the shooting circle despite scoring the goals were disallowed Towards the end of the first half LHS settled into some good play with Matilda Birney working hard from the centre third to the attacking third to create scoring chances for LHS An opportunity arose when NCIC were blew up for contact through the centre third giving LHS a penalty pass With a display of good passing links between Matilda Birney and Sophie Sinclair LHS were able to convert to a goal This was shortly followed by their second In the second half LHS worked hard in defence with Alice Henderson and Rebecca Leighton blocking NCIC Goal attack and shooter combinations on multiple occasions but a change in personnel for NCIC saw them get the next two goals The last goal of the game however was from Annalise Canning which secured a win for LHS Minor Netball 123

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 Coleraine College Tuesday 13th December 2022 The girls felt more confident going into this match with it being their first home match and with Mrs McCullough having continued with their training in the absence of Miss McCook they were more confident in their positions with set plays and working together as a team They played extremely well all round and ended the game with an undeniable win Loreto College B Tuesday 24th January 2023 With Loreto having won both their previous matches and LHS having won both their previous matches this was the deciding match of the season LHS started strong with the confidence of their last victory still in mind With some good interception and evasion skills shown by both sides through the centre third and good passing skills to move the ball up the court both teams were scoring almost like for like in the first half Going into the second half with a lead of two goals LHS felt in a strong position but due to a few missed scoring opportunities and loss of possession by LHS towards the end of the second half heads dropped and Loreto dominated overtaking and eventually winning the match by three goals A disappointing loss for the girls as they knew they had the skills to win the match but there is no doubt that the LHS girls will be back next year with a fire in their bellies Results V North Coast Integrated Won 3 2 V Coleraine College Won 10 0 V Loreto College B Lost 10 7 Squad Annalise Canning Sophie Sinclair Claire Fulton Matilda Birney Rihanna Mullan Rebecca Leighton Alice Henderson Rachel Smyth Caitlin Sherrard Minor Netball 124

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL Intermediate netball report 2023 This team played in the Coleraine and district C league with matches against Dunluce North Coast integrated and Dominican The team was open to Yr11 12 and we had initially hoped we would be able to field 2 teams of intermediates but unfortunately we didn t have the numbers The squad trained weekly from September and with our first match not until the start of September it gave the girls an opportunity to learn how to play together and for me to carry out selection Our first match was against North Coast Integrated we used STM sports hall to give ourselves the best chance they are used to a tiny hall We had a slow start to the game where we struggled with the extra space not something I had anticipated Eva and Lilyanna were doubting themselves in the shooting circle however this did not last long The girls started to focus on simple passing and moving and things started to turn in the 2nd quarter At half time they were 9 2 ahead giving them the confidence to push on Great defence from Captain Taylor Nicholl and Lily Thompson as GK limited the North Coasts circle entries The final score was 22 4 in our favour The next game was against Dunluce as our hall was out of action due to the school show we hired the hall in the Leisure centre This game proved quite feisty however the team started strong with fantastic linking play in the centre of the court between Lucy McClelland Lily Craig and Jane Smyth After the 1st quarter Dunluce did not know what had hit them and we were 10 1 We continued to put pressure on the Dunluce defence and great movement from Eva and Lilyanna in the circle left the Dunluce defence tied in Intermediate Netball 125

Page 126

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL knots Ruby Clarence and Naomi Connell both made impacts coming off the bench All in all a great team performance with the final score resulting in a 20 4 victory With Dominican and ourselves having beaten all other teams our match was the league decider and we had to travel away The Dominican teams are always well drilled but we were too This match was end to end with very little separating us At end of the 1st quarter we found ourselves 4 3 down Again we had to settle ourselves and play that ball a fraction earlier to stop Dominican intercepting Lillyanna and Eva found their shooting form and again great work in defence from myself and Lily meant at half time we had turned it around and had an 11 7 lead Ruby Jane Lily and Naomi controlled the centre third of the court and stopped Dominican retaining possession Mrs Mac was sweating waiting for the final whistle but we did it the final score 16 14 to us along with the Intermediate C title A great season and promotion in the bag let s hope we can continue to develop and do ourselves proud again next year The team enjoyed a lovely team night out in The corner to celebrate our success I am very proud of how hard these girls worked this season and I look forward to working with them again next year Mrs McCartney Squad members Lily Thompson Naomi Connell Lucy McClelland Jane Smyth Lilyanna Stewart Eva Donaghy Ruby Clarence Lily Craig Ava Daly and Captain Taylor Nicholl Player of the year Taylor Nicholl 126 The Wolfhound2023

LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Wolfhound2023 Under 14 Football Under 14 Year 10 Boys Football Team The Year 10 boys began training early in September in anticipation for a competitive season The numbers were very high with a huge interest in making the football team It was fantastic to see so many young boys get involved and take part in training The training consisted of a mixture of fitness football skills and tactics running on a Tuesday from 3 20pm to 4 30pm With the squad being large a decision was made for the first game of the season and unfortunately only 15 players could be chosen The season only included two games The first game was played away against a very good Cookstown High School side This team consisted of several Super Cup players who played for County Tyrone Despite this Limavady High School Year 10 boys dug deep and kept the game competitive Jacob McArthur bossed his area in midfield working hard to suppress any through balls that may have been played Curtis McIlmoyle didn t let anything pass him at the back winning most headers and playing with a maturity above his age Unfortunately the game finished 2 0 The second game was against Ballymoney High School This game was fiercely fought with both sides playing attacking football Leon Connolly found the back of the net with a left footed shot However Limavady High couldn t hold on to the lead and Ballymoney High School went on to win the game 2 1 Despite two negative results the boys absolutely loved getting game time and wished for more matches The numbers continued to stay at over 20 for each training session with the enthusiasm for football outweighing any negative thoughts on results Well done to all the Year 10 boys Player of the Year Jacob McArthur 130

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL What a day this was and how so very proud we are of our U 16 boys team Our U 16 boys secured two cup wins in a row with a thrilling 2 1 victory over Limavady Grammar in the Coleraine and District Schools Cup Final played at Coleraine Showgrounds Dominating the ball early and pressing the action LHS won a free kick 20yds out Jake Martin stepped up with a superb strike into the far top corner Limavady Grammar defended well and battled hard to prevent any further LHS goals in the first half with their goalkeeper keeping out a Jake Martin penalty In the second half LHS went searching for the second goal and missed several opportunities to put the game out of reach Lucas Thompson then settled everyone s nerves with a cool finish from some great link up play to make it 2 0 With 10 mins to play a rush of blood from big Sam Brown lead to a penalty when he bundled over a Grammar player in the box 2 1 and the Grammar sensed a chance to equalise as LHS seemed rattled for a moment Fortunately captain Luke Dennison got the boys composed again and calm heads prevailed with LHS creating further chances to kill off the game but these were squandered The final whistle sounded and LHS were deserving winners Well done to all involved and thanks to Limavady Grammar for an excellent game This team went two full seasons in the Coleraine and District competition undefeated which is an amazing feat in itself A great bunch of boys who deserved everything they achieved 133

The Wolfhound2023 LIMAVADY HIGH SCHOOL The Year 10 11 team were in a pool with only three other schools St Mary s Limavady Dunclug College and St Brigid s Derry with each match being played in 2x7 minute halves with the same 7v7 format as the juniors The first match against St Mary s got off to a shaky start and LHS went 3 0 down in the first half which would have been more had Naomi Connell not saved the other shots on target In the second half after finding their footing LHS came back fighting and created multiple chances at goal however were unable to convert LHS upped their defensive game as well and prevented St Mary s from getting the ball goal side However a side out gave St Mary s possession and with LHS out of position they converted this to their final goal making the final score 4 0 to St Mary s The second match against Dunclug was very evenly matched in the first half with both teams attacking and defending like for like A few saves either end saw the score 0 0 at half time But the second half saw a Dunclug player blew up for an undesirable challenge which caused some ill feeling on the pitch and the LHS girls became distracted Dunclug used this opportunity to score and ended up winning the match The final match against St Brigid s saw the team LHS come together with a marked improvement in their focus and communication a thorough display of their attacking and defensive skills and a level of enjoyment not seen in the previous two matches This game ended in a 4 0 win to LHS with goals scored by Lilyanna Stewart and Lily Thompson and assists from Lucy Morrison and Annaleece Hetherington Miss McCook s player of the tournament was Naomi Connell who played a blinder in goals whilst up against some tough competition Year 10 11 Player of the Tournament Naomi Connell Squad Grace Canning Annaleece Hetherington Naomi Connell Eva Donaghy Lilyanna Stewart Tiah McAuley Evie Coyle Lily Thompson Capt Lucy Morrison Abigail Hunt 135
