Leroy Thomas Ellis, Sr. was born on October 24, 1974, in Washington, D.C.,to the late Leroy B. Ellis and Doris Moore. A proud native Washingtonian,he grew up in the Northeast quadrant of the city, where he attended D.C.Public Schools. A die-hard Redskins fan, Leroy carried his hometown pridethroughout his life.LeroyLeroyThomasThomasEllisEllisSr.Sr.At the young age of 17, Leroy began his lifelong career with the District of Columbia Department ofPublic Works (DPW). Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Leroy proudly became athird-generation Solid Waste Collection employee. For over 33 years, he dedicated himself to servingthe citizens of Washington, D.C., earning All-Star Service Awards and the admiration of colleagues andresidents alike. Leroy wore his DPW uniform with immense pride, as if it were the finest Versace outfit.He went above and beyond for the community. He was admired for his strong work ethic, hisunmatched knowledge of the city’s trash routes, and his kindness to residents—especially the elderlyand disabled. He often helped by pulling their trash cans to the curb before starting his route. Overthe years, Leroy built lifelong relationships with both his DPW colleagues and the community. To them,he was more than a city worker—he was family.Leroy accepted Christ as a child and held strong Christian faith and values throughout his life. In 2002,he rededicated his life to Christ and invited his future wife to church, where together they becameactive members of The House of Praise. Their faith became the foundation of their marriage andfamily life. On August 9, 2003, Leroy married the love of his life, Titiana Benton. For 26 years, theyshared a beautiful marriage built on love, laughter, faith, and family. Together they raised a blended family that was Leroy’s greatest source of pride and joy. Leroy was aloving husband, father, and “Pop-Pop,” who found his deepest joy in family. He was a proud father toKatrina Haynes, Delonte Haynes, Derrick Pinkney, Shamirra Haynes, LaShawn Ellis, Leroy Ellis, Jr., CyrellEllis, and Tatiana Ellis. His grandchildren—Madison Kinney, Morocco Pinkney, and Eelyk Farmer—filledhis heart with joy and pride. Always involved, Leroy volunteered at his children’s schools, supportedfundraisers, and ensured safe rides for his son’s basketball teammates. Holidays, birthdays, andSunday dinners were sacred to him—times when his presence filled the room with laughter. A naturaljokester, he loved pulling playful pranks to keep everyone smiling. Above all, Leroy was deeplysupportive, consistently checking on family and friends and always willing to lend a helping hand toanyone in need. Hardworking and determined, Leroy was more than a career man; he was a provider, protector, andentrepreneur. He always had a side hustle and embodied the values instilled by his father—work hard,protect, and provide for your family. As an entrepreneur, he founded Ellis Hauling, LLC, a familybusiness he proudly operated alongside his sons, employed several family members, with his wifemanaging the administration. On August 26, 2025, Leroy went home to be with the Lord. He entered his heavenly home, where he was reunited with his parents, his sister Tina Ellis, his nephew Vonte Martin, and other beloved family members who went before him.Leroy leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service that will live on in the hearts of his family and community. He is survived by his devoted wife, Titiana Benton-Ellis; his children, Katrina, Delonte, Derrick, Shamirra, LaShawn, Leroy Jr., Cyrell, and Tatiana; his grandchildren, Madison, Morocco, and Eelyk; his sister, Veronica Martin; his sister in-laws; Latoya Benton, Sophia Lawson, Precious Williams, Maegan Henry, and Tamara Talbert. His brother in-laws; Michael (Nicole) Benton, Mike Henry II, Robert (Sara) Henry, Alvin Davis, and Curtis Lomax. Father in-law; Dr. Mike (Melanie) Henry Sr., his aunt, Joyce Scott; his uncle, Eric Moore; nephews Ernest Martin and Adrian Flowers; niece Latifah Flowers; godson Juan Cartledge; and a host of cousins, family, and friends who cherished him deeply. Leroy’s life was a testimony of hard work, integrity, and love for family. Though his earthly journey has ended, his legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched.Obituary Obituary
