STUDENT ENROLLMENTREQUIREMENTS FORGenerally, enrollment is facilitated by the individual school data manager and/or the schoolcounselors. Beyond the school level, the processes of enrollment and student assignmentare governed by the Associate Superintendent’s Office. As a district, we have navigated toonline enrollment; Parents can access the online enrollment portal athttps://lenoirncc.scriborder.com/. REPORTINGSTUDENT ACADEMICLenoir County Public Schools shares progress of students through a variety of ways,including quarterly report cards, progress reports, and assignment/ test feedback.Feedback on conduct is also included. Lenoir County Public Schools students receive progress reports and report cardsfollowing the district’s approved Traditional Calendar and Early College Calendar.Parents are provided a copy of the district calendar at the beginning of each schoolyear. Additionally, the district’s approved Traditional Calendar and Early CollegeCalendar is available on the LCPS district website. Each LCPS school informs parents of all student testing and accountability informationvia ConnectEd voice messages, social media posts, and drafted letters sent home withstudents. This information can also be found on our LCPS District website.State Assessments: Individual student reports for end-of-grade/course tests and other state assessments(English language proficiency assessment) are accessible in the parent portal of theNC-SIS (PowerSchool). Every school provides each parent with directions on how toset up access to their students’ PowerSchool portal to check grades at all times. PROGRAMSRIGOROUS ACADEMICStudents in Lenoir County Public Schools have several options for pursuing theirinterests and skills at their academic level. The LCPS High School Planning Guideexplains the Career and College Promise and other dual enrollment opportunities, aswell as Advance Placement and NC Virtual Public School courses.Career and Technical Education (CTE):NC has made a significant investment in developing students and programs to meet theneeds of the future workforce. PROGRAMSRIGOROUS ACADEMICIn our district, there are the following programs available that are more rigorous andchallenging than the standard content for students:Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted (AIG): In NC, school districts must identify and serve academically or intellectually gifted (AIG)K-12 students. These are students who are performing, or have the potential ofperforming, at high levels of accomplishment in intellectual and/or specific academicareas, such as reading and/or math when compared with other students of their age, orin their grade level, experience, or environment.The Lenoir County Public Schools Local AIG Plan outlines specific opportunities fordifferentiated, rigorous instruction and accelerated programs. Our district has developedan AIG Introductory Video and Timeline to help parents better understand the AIGprogram. This describes how students will be identified and served across grades K-12.In Lenoir County Public Schools, students are often provided the following services:Differentiated curriculum and instruction with flexible student groupsAccelerated opportunities (subject and/or grade acceleration, credit bydemonstrated mastery (CDM), AP courses, dual enrollment courses)Enrichment experiences, which may be during the school day or beyond, and may bewithin the regular calendar year or may include summer opportunities Other opportunities for extension of content standardsServices for AIG students may be provided by AIG personnel or within the regularclassroom by teachers trained to meet the needs of gifted students. Career and College Promise (CCP): Lenoir County Public Schools partners with Lenoir Community College to offer dualenrollment opportunities through the CCP program. PROGRAMSRIGOROUS ACADEMICAccelerated AccessNCVPS:North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) is NC’s state supplemental program andleader in online education, providing inclusive learning opportunities for students acrossthe state. Founded in 2007, with a strong commitment to ensuring quality education forall students, regardless of location, NCVPS has over 16 years of experience servingdiverse learners.Students may enroll in NCVPS courses for a variety of reasons. Work with your schoolcounselor if you are interested in taking NCVPS courses.Lenoir County Public Schools offers the following courses through NCVPS:Earth Science for High School Credit for Middle School Students1.World History for High School Credit for Middle School Students2.AP European History3.AP Human Geography4.Chemistry Honors for Early College students in the summer5.Students and parents should contact their school counselor for more information.Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM):Lenoir County Public Schools offers opportunities for students to earn credit for a highschool course without enrolling in the course. OPTIONS FOR STUDENTSSCHOOL ENROLLMENTStudents enrolled in Lenoir County Public Schools are assigned to certain schools based ona local assignment plan and geographic boundaries. There are a number of enrollmentoptions that exist outside of the standard student assignment plan. Many of the optionsbelow have application deadlines and other specific eligibility requirements. Out-of-County: Students who live outside of Lenoir County may request to attend a LCPSschool by submitting a Student Release request from the school district in the county inwhich they reside for approval. Once a student has received an approved Student Release,parents should complete the online LCPS In-District Transfer form. Families will be notifiedvia letter by mail of the status of the request. Out-of-District: Students who reside in Lenoir County and would like to attend a LCPSschool outside of their assigned school/ attendance zone should complete the online LCPSIn-District Transfer form to request to their LCPS school of preference. Families will benotified via letter by mail of the status of the request. Dual-Enrollment: High school students who wish to take community college courses freeof charge can apply through their high school counselor and the LCC liaison assigned totheir high school.Early College: Lenoir County Early College High School is located on the campus of LCC.This option is a specialized high school opportunity students meeting the necessaryrequirements for application. Students and families interested in the Early College will beinvited to attend an informational meeting at the end of the student’s 8th grade year.Students and families will learn about application requirements and interview process. Charter Schools: Charter schools are public schools of choice that are authorized by theState Board of Education and operated by independent non-profit boards of directors.State and local tax dollars are the primary funding sources for charter schools, which haveopen enrollment and cannot discriminate in admissions, associate with any religion orreligious group, or charge-tuition. Charter schools operate with freedom from many of theregulations that govern district schools, but charter schools are held accountable throughthe State assessment and accountability system. SUPPORT SERVICESSTUDENT HEALTH &In-School Dental Care through Kinston Community Health Center:Working with the professional staff at Kinston Community Health Center, LCPSfacilitates affordable, in-school dental care for elementary and middle school studentswho do not have a regular dentist. The program is a continuation of services initiated byKinston Community Health Center in 2020 with grant support from The DukeEndowment.An estimated 70 percent of the district's students do not receive regular dental care orknow enough about oral hygiene. By bringing its services to the schools, the KCHCDental Team works with LCPS to overcome issues of access at the heart of dentalproblems for many students. The in-school dental screenings are designed to assess astudent's oral health and identify and fix problems, either during the school visit or afollow-up appointment. Services include a dental exam and diagnosis, dental cleaning,fluoride treatments and oral hygiene instructions, as well as dental X-rays and dentalsealants if needed.These in-school dental services are provided with the full knowledge and permission ofthe student's parents/caretaker. To agree to allow your student to participate in this in-school dental program, please complete this online registration form.Allergies: Allergic reactions have the potential to negatively impact students in the learningenvironment. Parents of a student with a life-threatening allergy must provide theschool with documentation from a licensed healthcare provider. This information shouldinclude the specific allergy and medical requirements needed for the student. LCPStakes seriously its responsibility to take reasonable steps to protect the safety of itsstudents. Staff will work in partnership with the students and parents to developemergency medical plans. The goal is to increase awareness & communication, preventpossible exposure to identified allergens and create an emergency procedure forallergic reactions.Medications: Students may receive or self-administer medication at school when medication ismedically necessary for health or learning and must be taken during the school day.Medication must be prescribed by a licensed physician. Alternative medications, such asherbal or homeopathic medications that are not tested by the US Food and DrugAdministration for safety or effectiveness, lack safety information and therefore cannotbe administered or taken at school.19
SUPPORT SERVICESSTUDENT HEALTH &Self-administration of Emergency MedicationsAt all school levels, students may self-medicate with emergency prescriptionmedication if they have permission to do so documented on their Parent and PhysicianOrder for Medication form.State law allows students who have met certain conditions to carry and self-administeremergency medication during the school day and at all school-sponsored after-schoolevents, including transportation to and from events, for asthma and severe, life-threatening allergies (anaphylaxis). This does include asthma inhalers and injectableepinephrine.The parent or guardian must provide the school with a completed Parent and PhysicianOrder for Medication form. The Medication Permission form is here.The student must be observed and certified by the School Nurse to be able to self-administer medications.Controlled SubstancesControlled substances may be administered in the school setting with a completedmedication form. Controlled substances may be self-administered and self-carried onlyin Middle School or High School. Medication should be in a container dispensed by apharmacy that includes the student’s name, name of medication, date prescription wasfilled and directions clearly marked. Students that self-carry should carry no more thana daily dose at any time.Screenings: The following screenings are provided to students at certain grade levels or schools.Students, in any grade, with evidence of problems related to hearing, vision, dental,communicable disease or related academics will be screened, or rescreened, uponrequest.DentalAll kindergarten students receive a dental screening by a dental hygienist.HearingAll students in Kindergarten receive a hearing screening by trained school staff,regardless of Kindergarten Health Assessment hearing screening results. Requestedhearing screenings are also completed by trained school staff. School audiologistsoversee and provide follow-up for all failed hearing screenings.20
SUPPORT SERVICESSTUDENT HEALTH &VisionVision is screened by trained school staff or trained volunteers on all students in grades1, 3 and 5. Vision screening is provided for Kindergartners if it is not documented on theKindergarten Health Assessment. Screening is provided for students in other gradelevels upon request by school staff. The school nurse is contacted if screening or follow-up assistance is needed.Communicable DiseasesSchool personnel who observe symptoms of a possible communicable disease shouldcontact the student’s parent or guardian. School staff may consult with the school nurseregarding a suspected communicable condition. Follow-up is provided as needed.Head Lice:Head lice are tiny, wingless insects spending their entire life on the human scalp andfeeding exclusively on human blood. Once on the scalp, they reproduce quickly, layingeggs (nits) and causing severe itching. Policy and research from the Harvard School ofEpidemiology, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association ofSchool Nurses all state there is no value to excluding children from school for nits only.Children will only be sent home if live lice are observed.PreventionPlease check your child's scalp often for nits and live lice. Instruct family members notto share combs, brushes, hats and other personal items. Children may come back toschool after being treated for lice. Only nits that are within 1/4" from the scalp must beremoved.For more information, please refer to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention'swebsite.Suicide Prevention:According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the 2ndleading cause of death for youth 15-24 years of age and the 3rd leading cause for 10-14year olds in the United States. All of us have a role in trying to protect our students.Trained school staff work daily to prevent suicide by identifying and assisting studentswho show warning signs or risk factors, which can include depression, mental healthconcerns, or thoughts of suicide. LCPS professionals screen students, notifyparents/guardians and connect them with community services when appropriate toaddress their needs. Suicide is never the solution to a student's problems.21

Thethree traditional high schools have college advisors who assist students with theircollege goals. At each school there is at least one school counselor available tostudents.
