Following the centuries-old successful traditions ofyacht clubs worldwide, our Board of Directors hasmaintained leadership continuity over the years.Kelowna has been my home for the past 35years. You can feel it in the air. Thedocks are starting to thaw. TheClub is gradually coming aliveagain. My pre-season boat yardinvoice arrives and sparksexcitement like no other invoicecan. The countdown to anotherseason on the lake is wellunderway. It means we're close. To the season, to our Clubmakeover, to a steady financialstate, We're almost there. We have collected our annual dues, funded our project reserves, and aligned our strategic plans to guarantee a smooth andsustainable season ahead.Treasurer’s TakePage 10We’re Almost ThereWe’re Almost ThereThe Countdown BeginsWhile we welcome feedback andsuggestions year-round, our AnnualMember's Survey helps us pinpoint what'sat the top of members' minds - where weneed to clarify decisions, identify areas thatneed improvement, and prioritize projectsaccordingly. This year, one of the recurringtopics was the Boat Club, particularly whymembers are required to pay for rentals orparticipation in the program.Preparing for a SmoothFinancial SeasonThe excitement for boating season isn't theonly thing ramping up. Behind the scenes,we have worked hard to ensure the Club isfinancially prepared for another great year.We have collected our annual dues, funded our project reserves, and alignedour strategic plans to guarantee a smoothand sustainable season ahead. Boat Club: A Self-Sustaining ServiceThe Cost of Running a FleetSince 2021, the Club has invested$359,430 into boat purchases, including aYamaha Wakesurf, an Atlantis Pontoon, aSeaRay, and a Southbay, among others. That's before factoring in maintenance, fuel, insurance, and staffing - costs that must berecouped to keep the program viable. If the program were to run at a loss, the onlyway to offset it would be to increase generalmembership dues, which wouldn't be fair tomembers who don't use the service.Understandably, by the nature of the Club, many of our members already own boatsand have brought that silly amount ofoverhead willingly upon themselvesprivately for reasons we'll remember againin a couple of months. That being said, for those participating inthe Boat Club, it remains one of the best-value ways to get out on the water withoutthe full-time costs of boat ownership.Between moorage, repairs, andwinterization, anyone who owns a boatknows that expenses add up quickly, andthe Boat Club provides an easy way toenjoy the lake without the financial ormaintenance burden. The short answer is that the Boat Club is aself-sustaining service, not a subsidizedamenity. It operates entirely on user fees, ensuring that the costs of running andmaintaining the fleet are covered by thosewho use it rather than by generalmembership dues. The Boat Club is a self-sustaining service, not asubsidized amenity. W W W . K E L O W N A Y A C H T C L U B . C O MLooking Ahead to theSeasonSo here we are, standing at the edge ofanother incredible lake season, watchingthe Club get its finishing touches before wehead into another year of boating, socializing, and building on the legacy ofwhat KYC represents. Whether you'regetting on the water through the Boat Clubor sinking into a freshly reupholsteredlounge chair, one thing is clear - we'realmost there. The season is nearly here, and since we'refloating comfortably at our non-Covidsteady-state revenue, so is the financialstability we've been working toward as aClub. Just as the Boat Club gets members out onthe lake, the Clubhouse is where we allcome together before and after. While lastyear's re-furnishing of the Member Loungewas a welcome update, the operationsteam isn't stopping there. Plans are now inplace to renovate the downstairs commonarea, transforming it into a more functionaland comfortable meeting space. Bothprojects were already accounted for inlong-term financial planning, meaning theywere built into our budgeting processwithout adding financial strain.Aesthetically, the Clubhouse is almostthere, and functionally, we're ensuring itserves our members for years to come.F I N A N C I A LParticipation trends have evolvedsignificantly. While we cannot definitivelystate that Lifestyle Membership sales weresolely driven by Boat Club access, we doknow that from 2021 to 2023, 60% of BoatClub members held Lifestyle Memberships. If we hypothetically attributed 25% ofLifestyle memberships sold to the ability toparticipate in the program, that wouldamount to $125,000 in initiations driven bythis feature. Personally, I don't think that25% figure is unreasonable. While theinitiations on the Lifestyle Membershipsaren't recurring revenue, we are finding thatthere's been a shift in usage and demandthat does lend itself to recurring revenue. Page 11How the Boat ClubImpacts MembershipBetween 2021 and2023, 60% of Boat Clubmembers held LifestyleMemberships. Government Support &Future GrowthFor the past three years, we’veclaimed government grants tooffset costs. While this year’sfunding wasn’t renewed, we’reoptimistic about futureapprovals.Further, there's government fundingavailable for programs like this geared atencouraging new boaters, which we haveclaimed for the past three years to helpoffset some of the costs. We didn't renewthat grant for the 2023-2024 season, but weremain optimistic about our applicationapprovals for future years. By 2024, regular members had become themajority of Boat Club users, with 56% oftotal participation. This tells us that whilethe Boat Club has been a great entry pointfor many, it continues to evolve as part ofthe broader membership experience. OurRegular memberships produce moreturnover and, by extension, initiation feesrelative to our new and capped Lifestylememberships, and we have seen a recentuptick in Regular Member initiation with theBoat Club as a stated reason. For a deeper dive into the full scope of theprogram, please refer to our two-pagespread in this issue, which contains all theessential information regarding Boat Club2025, where we'll outline all the benefits, opportunities, and ways to get involved thisseason.ClubhouseEnhancements: What’sNext? While last year's re-furnishing of the MemberLounge was a welcomeupdate, the operationsteam isn't stopping there.I know I'm not alone in countingdown the days. See you on thewater, is what I will say in a fewmore months. The two minutes ittook to run out in flip flops and surfgear to take a picture was enoughto tell me it's almost there but notquite yet.

This year, we have chosen twokey themes which emerged from oursurvey to focus on: the importance offostering diversity within the Cluband enhancing the social experiencethrough fitness and other engagingactivities.A FOCUS ON DIVERSITY ANDSOCIAL ENGAGEMENTBUILDING A MOREINCLUSIVE CLUBOne recurring piece of feedbackhighlighted is the need to continuemaking the Kelowna Yacht Club amore inclusive space for all. Whilemany members already see the Clubas a welcoming and vibrantcommunity, we recognize that there'salways room to improve. From the survey, we learned thatmembers value inclusivity andengagement but would like to seemore initiatives focused on creatingan environment that reflects abroader demographic. GLORIA & RODNEY LOZINSKIA volunteering legacyMeet Rodney and Gloria Lozinski, adynamic duo who have been yachtclub members since 1994. It allstarted with a chance encounter overthirty years ago when the couplestumbled upon the old clubhouse. The sounds of loud music andlaughter drew them in, and little didthey know that this place wouldbecome their second home fordecades to come.As active volunteers within the Club, Rodney andGloria have become pillars of the community andinstrumental in upholding its many traditions. They firmly believe in giving back to theircommunity without expecting anything in return. In fact, they have been consistently volunteeringfor events such as the Blind Fishing Derby, BigBike Ride, Boat for Hope, Boat Show, Swim Acrossthe Lake, Invasion, and so much more. They have made countless friends from differentcities and countries through KYC’s reciprocalprivileges, as well as participated in other Club’sevents around the lake as a volunteerrepresentative of KYC. Dish & DineKELOWNA YACHT CLUBClub Chef, Kyle TaborPage 26Each edition of the Chronicle will feature a "Chef'sKiss of Approval" recipe, personally recommendedby one of our talented Member Lounge chefs.Change is always bittersweet, and as we say goodbye to Chef Jeff Burns, who has set off across the pond to Ireland to expand his culinaryadventures, we open our doors (and our appetites) to Chef Kyle Tabor, thenew head chef of the Kelowna Yacht Club!A Fond Farewell & A Warm WelcomeMeet Chef KyleA Kelowna local, Chef Kyle Tabor began his culinary career at 16, starting in restaurant kitchens washing dishes and peeling vegetables. He later worked as a baker at a Kelowna retirement home, starting his mornings at 5 AM to make fresh bread for the residents. His journey then led him to a sushi restaurant where he initially worked in the back kitchen, preparing tempura and rice bowls before moving to the front to roll sushi each night. He trained under a sushi master with over 20 years of experience, refining his technique and deepening his understanding of Japanese cuisine. This is a dish I regularly serve in the Member Lounge on Friday nightsas part of the Fresh Catch feature. It’s always a hit and often sells out,so I thought it would be a great recipe to share with members.Tomato Broth:6 tbsp Canola or Extra Virgin Olive Oil½ Cup Diced White Onion¾ Cup Julienne Fennel¾ Tbsp Minced Garlic2 Tbsp Tomato Paste1 tsp each Salt and Pepper½ Cup Dry White Wine1 ½ Cup Crushed Tomatoes½ L Chicken or Fish Broth2 Bay Leaves4 tsp Dried Herbs (equal parts oregano, dill, basil, thyme)Seafood:4 oz Halibut Fillet4 Jumbo Black Tiger Prawns4 Large Scallops3 oz Sliced Squid10 Cleaned MusselsSalt2 Tbsp Canola or Extra Virgin Olive Oil½ Cup Dry White Wine2 Tbsp Fresh Parsley½ Fresh LemonRed Pepper Aioli3 Egg Yolks1 ½ tsp Dijon Mustard½ Fresh Lemon¾ Tbsp Minced Garlic½ cup Canola Oil ¼ Cup Pureed Roasted Red PeppersFor Serving:2 large slices Toasted BaguetteIngredients In 2014, Kyle joined the Hotel Eldorado as a Chef De Partie under Chef Vincent Stefano, managing the line and overseeing a small prep team. SAILING WITHOUT LIMITSAble Sail Okanagan (FormerlyDisabled Sailing Association) haslong been a cherished fixture onKelowna Yacht Club’s “O Dock”.KYC and ASO work together toprovide magical sailingopportunities for persons withdisabilities in Kelowna and thesurrounding area. Most of our members have apassing knowledge of Able SailAssociation (ASO) and its wonderfulwork, but do you know the story ofdisabled sailing and how it all gotstarted? The story behind thisempowering initiative is as inspiringas the sailors who take to the water.DISABLED SAILING AND THE KELOWNA YACHTCLUB’S COMMITMENT TO INCLUSIONOn June 27, 1973, 15-year-old Rick Hansenwas living in Williams Lake, B.C, when anaccident changed the course of his life, thrown from the back of a pickup truck,Rick suffered a spinal cord injury that lefthim paralyzed and reliant on a wheelchair. After a long and challenging period ofrecovery and rehabilitation, Rick found hisway to wheelchair sports. Later he earned adegree in Physical Education from UBC.From 1979 to 1984 Rick won 19 wheelchairmarathons, three world titles and 15 medalsat the Paralympic and Pan Am Games. In1985 he started his now-legendary “Man inMotion World Tour” and became aninspiration to disabled persons around theworld. Canadians know his story well andare proud of his continuingaccomplishments. After a long-term struggle with depression,Sam completed a Bachelor of BusinessAdministration from Simon FraserUniversity. His organization the SamSullivan Disability Foundation has raisedover $20 million and served thousands ofpeople throughout Canada. Sam has madesignificant contributions to the accessibilityof outdoor sport, His commitment toadvocacy and civic engagement led him topublic service, where he rose to becomethe Mayor of Vancouver, CanadianParalympic Ambassador, an MLA andrecipient of the Order of Canada. A Brief History: How do these two Canadian icons fitinto our story?Adaptive (Disabled) Sailing inBritish ColumbiaJust two years later, in 1988, Rickpresented the sailboat to his friend SamSullivan. The two men started adapting thesailboat further so individuals with severeinjuries could use it more independently. After several successful adaptations, theyformed a charitable foundation and, withdonations, bought a second sailboat, alsobuilt in England. Armed with these two vessels, Samfounded the Disabled Sailing Association ofBritish Columbia in 1989, opening the worldof sailing to countless individuals who hadnever dreamed it possible. Through hiswork with the Disabled Sailing Association, the Martin 16 Sailboat was created with 150in use around the world.During Expo 86 in Vancouver, a pivotalmoment occurred for adaptive sailing inBritish Columbia. British Prime MinisterMargaret Thatcher gifted Rick Hansen anadapted British-built Sunbird sailboat inhonour of his “Man in Motion World Tour”.He fittingly named the sailboat “Iron Lady”after Margaret Thatcher. The Okanagan ConnectionHans Van Leening, a dedicatedphysiotherapist at Kelowna GeneralHospital had long worked with individuals who had severe injuries. In 1985, Hansbecame the physiotherapist for theCanadian Disabled Sports Team where hecrossed paths with Rick Hansen.BREAKING BARRIERSPage 34In 1978 at the age of 19, Vancouver BornSam Sullivan’s life took a drastic turn whena skiing accident left him almost completelyparalyzed. Our programs include sailing forthe fun of it, sailing to learn toSail Canada standards and forthe more adventurous: we offerthe opportunity to learn to raceand more.Initially, the Okanagan Chapter was locatedat the Central Okanagan SailingAssociation (COSA) in the lower Missionarea of Kelowna on Hobson Road. It wasgreatly appreciated and quickly became abeloved addition to the community bypeople in the area offering the OkanaganLake sailing experience to many peoplewith disabilities. Miriam and Hans workedtirelessly to ensure disabled sailors couldsafely enjoy the feelings of joy, mobility andaccomplishment that sailing gives to thosewho try it. As technology advanced—introducing innovations like sip-n-puffcontrols—more and more individuals wereable to take the helm, expanding the reachof this transformative activity. In 1986, shortly after returning from Europewith the Canadian Disabled Sports Team,Hans was involved in a serious car accident. He suffered a spinal cord injury that left hima quadriplegic. He was in hospital inVancouver for four months beforereturning home to begin a new chapter inhis life.In 1990, Sam Sullivan called Hans andinvited him to come sailing in Vancouver.Initially hesitant, Hans was unsure, but hiswife Miriam insisted. She packed the van,and together, drove to the coast. Whenthey arrived at Jericho Sailing Club, theywere recognized by one of Hans’ formerpatients, who spoke with Miriam andencouraged Hans to give sailing a try. Withsome strong encouragement, he sailed onEnglish Bay that afternoon and it was awonderful, life changing, experience. Early Days in the OkanaganThe Adaptive Sailing Associationat KYCThe partnership between KYC and the DSA(now called Able Sail Okanagan) has beenan outstanding success using the term“magical” seems suiting to describe andcapture the experience of the program andwhat it offers to people with disabilities. It’san experience made possible because ofthe dedication of past and present KYC /ASO volunteer members such as TracyDelorme, Barry Gordan, Paul Thiessen,Clark Berry, Larry Clark, Sherri Lee Parsons, and many more who work tirelessly withKelowna residents who come to the Club tosail the lake. ASO offers participantsrecreation, education, and competitiveracing. Most importantly, they offerenjoyment, recreation and an improvedsense of independence & self-esteem, thatcan be life changing. The DSA has four sailboats, a Hobie CatTrimaran, and a motorized boat to providea coach and safety on the lake. It has alarger Soner sailboat that canaccommodate five plus a caretaker. TheMartin 16 sailboats are equipped to enablepeople with a wide variety of disabilities andare almost unsinkable. KYC's docks are equipped with thenecessary lifts to safely transfer sailors intotheir vessels, and for those who need it, ourvolunteers sail alongside, providingadditional support.I encourage members to view the excellentvideo from 2019 entitled - “OurCommunity: The Joy of Sailing” to see theprogram’s impact on people. (you can findthis video available to view on You tube)It’s a moving testament to the power ofsailing and community, truly inspirational.PAST COMMODOREAND LIFE MEMBER,MIKE TERRIS WRITTEN BY:W A T E RW W W . He was heavilyinvolved in promoting the Youth SailingProgram and saw the Disabled SailingAssociation (DSA) as a great fit for KYC. A LEGACY OF INCLUSIVITY:TRACY DELORME AND HERJOURNEY WITH ABLE SAILFrom 2011 to 2017, Tracy served asthe driving force behind the program, overseeing its operations andchampioning its growth. Under herleadership, the DSA expanded itsofferings, extending the sailing seasonand introducing innovative programsthat highlighted the joy andaccessibility of the sport. One of her proudest contributions wasthe introduction of racing to theprogram. "Racing brings a new levelof excitement and skill," she recalls.Through practice races, participationin the Commodore's Cup, andrepresentation in the Mobility Cup—anational adaptive sailing regatta—Tracy helped open competitive sailingto individuals of all abilities. Her effortsculminated in co-hosting theprestigious Mobility Cup in 2017alongside Fellow Member Larry Clark,a monumental event that broughtsailors across Canada and beyond tothe Okanagan.Page 36ABLE SAILIn 2006, after moving to the OkanaganValley in 2001, Tracy and her familyjoined the Kelowna Yacht Club. Drawnby the vibrant sailing community, shequickly immersed herself in the Club'sculture. Not long before, her passionfor the sport led her to discover theDisabled Sailing Association (DSA),now known as Able Sail Okanagan(ASO).What began as a casual suggestionfrom a friend soon became atransformative chapter in her life.Tracy's connection with the programdeepened after earning her sailinginstructor certification in 2011, whichpaved the way for her to take the helmof the DSA program. For Tracy Delorme, the rhythm ofthe water has been a constantsource of inspiration, adventure, and fulfillment. Introduced tosailing by her father at the age of16, Tracy's journey has taken herfrom the shores of Lake Ontario tothe warm turquoise waters of theBahamas, from the historicharbours of Greece to the bustlingregattas on British Columbia'swest coast. & Launching TipsPage 8B O A T R A M P E T I Q U E T T EKEEP TO THE RIGHT AND STAY ALERTRemove straps and secure your drain plug.Load your gear prior and, not on the ramp itself.Make sure you don’t have any loose lines thatcould foul a propeller.Complete all necessary engine checks and makesure you have a paddle for back-up.Preparation is key. Before pulling into the ramp area, ensure your boat is ready to launchIf you’ve ever used the public boat ramp atthe Kelowna Yacht Club during peakseason, you already know - it’s not for thefaint of heart. The sun is blazing, trailersare lined up like an automotive obstaclecourse, and tensions are high. It’s a placewhere patience is tested, and relationshipsto put it lightly, become strained.Arriving prepared minimizes delays and helps maintaina steady flow of traffic for everyone, and of course, invites less judgement from onlookers. BE PREPARED BEFORE YOU HIT THE RAMPJust like on the road, the ramp operates with a clear flow oftraffic. Stick to the right if you can and always keep a 360-degree awareness of yourLaunching and trailering a boat is a team effort. Use clear, concise communication with your crew to coordinate everystep:Assign roles for who will guide, who will drive, and whowill secure the boat.If you’re working solo, take your time—better safe thansorry.Proper hand signals and verbal cues can make all thedifference, especially in high-traffic scenarios. It’s bestto establish these well before you are even in sight ofthe launch. COMMUNICATE LIKE A PROsurroundings. Boats, trailers, and people can appearquickly, so vigilance is your best tool for avoiding mishaps.STEP OFF, NOT INWhen it’s time to launch or retrieve, be ready to step off thedock and guide your boat rather than lingering in the way.Efficiency and awareness are your allies when working inbusy spaces. Make sure to start your engine before castingoff to avoid having to test your paddles. Here’s to a season of smoothlaunches, happy memories andmarital bliss on Okanagan Lake!K Y C C H R O N I C L E | S P R I N G 2 0 2 5Page 38

C O MPage 39W A T E RWait your turn patiently and be ready to act whenit’s your time to launch or trailer.Avoid blocking the ramp or loitering in high-trafficareas.Offer assistance if you see someone struggling, especially on windy days - it’s the kind ofcamaraderie we pride ourselves on at the Club. The ramp serves both public users and Kelowna YachtClub members, so a little courtesy goes a long way:Keep the area clean and enjoyable for everyone. If you have recently fueled your boat, make sureto wipe up any spills or residue to avoid itentering the lake. Remove garbage, food, andanything left behind in your vessel or trailer. Notonly does this keep the marina tidy, but it alsoprevents unwanted pests from making their wayto our shared waterside haven.SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE DAYOnce you’re on the water, adhere to dead slowspeeds within the basin to protect other vesselsand avoid stirring up debris. Look back at yourwake, if you see any white froth, you are going tofast. Outside the basin, maintain awareness of no-wake zones, ensuring a smooth experience fornearby paddleboarders, kayakers, and swimmers.Go as slow as possible while maintainingsteerage. ENJOY THE EXPERIENCEBoating is about freedom, fun, and making themost of your time on the water—not about stress-testing your patience at the boat ramp. Byfollowing a few simple guidelines, we can all keepthe launch smooth, the tempers cool, and the dayheadache-free.A little mindfulness goes a long way in ensuringthat every launch is less about chaos and moreabout getting on the water with ease! The Okanagan Lake is dotted with buoys for areason—they mark safe mooring spots andprovide navigational guidance. It’s always a goodidea to consult a chart for specifics. As you headfor open water, beware of shallow areas; the northside of the basin is notoriously shallow due tosand buildup. Keep your distance from thebreakwater to avoid having to use your hook. RESPECT HAZARDS TO NAVIGATION
