IntroductionDo you desire a meaningful life? If so, the information in this ebook should encourage you and help you move toward the fulllment, peace, and joy that a meaningful life brings!First, let me give you an overview of these ve steps. It is not enough to be born; we must mature and grow up. Similarly, as Christians, we must also grow up and be trained (discipled). The Five Aspects of Discipleship TrainingJesus said: “‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” (Matthew 28:19–20)There are ve areas where we need to mature as believers in Christ:• We need to change from self-rule to Christ’s rule• We need to change our thinking to God’s right way about every subject• We need to change our emotions so they empower and energize the right ways• We need to set new goals spiritually, educationally, domestically, vocationally, nancially, etc., based on right thinking• Then we need to lead others through the ve aspects of being ChristianI know God can work mightily in you when you implement these steps. Feel free to reach out to your mentor, pastor, or our ministry if you have questions about what you are learning. “The things which
4Keys to a Meaningful Lifeyou learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9).
Christ’s RuleThe problem today is not just that many are true to false gods but multitudes are false to the true God. Damnable heresies are now dominant in multitudes of “Christian” churches. Perilous times are here! The Master Himself said, “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24). Those days are here now. Fake Christianity is everywhere to be found. How can you know for sure that you are a genuine Christian? Any gospel that denies the Lordship of Christ over the believer is a false gospel.Everyone has been taken in by a counterfeit at some point. There was that gold watch that wasn’t really gold or the twenty-dollar bill that wasn’t real. It’s not usually a big deal to deal with counterfeit things, but let’s reframe that. What about counterfeit salvation? How can we be sure that we are truly a Christian?Christian: Genuine or ImitationConsider this pie chart. Each slice represents the different facets of a person’s existence: relationships, such as parents, spouse, children, and friends; jobs; nances; church activities; other hobbies and pursuits; and anything else that applies. We have a tendency to name one slice of that pie “Jesus” and put all the Jesus-related stuff there. If we do that, we are compartmentalizing Jesus. We put Him in the church spot, but He doesn’t manage any other part. This is how people end up being believers, but not genuine Christ-followers. If we don’t let Jesus have the central spot in our hearts, we are still running the show. We say we believe in Him, but we run our ParentsSpouseHabitsSexJesusEtc.$$$ Job
6Keys to a Meaningful Lifeown lives. We go to church and sing the songs and pray and say the right words, but our lives do not really re ect true growth in Him. What needs to change? And how?How to Know When Christ Is LordIt’s simple. Jesus must be in a leadership position, the management position, in our lives if we are to be genuine. If Jesus is the master of our life, we don’t have the option to sin, to steal, to commit adultery, etc. When Jesus Christ is our Lord, we cease to have an opinion on any matter on which God has already spoken in His Word! If He is Lord and we are the servant, He rules. Our will is yielded to Him. That is true Christianity. Keep in mind that Satan desires us to ful ll legitimate needs using unscriptural methods. But when Jesus Christ is in the management position, the Lord position, it is clear that we simply follow the methods and principles taught in Scripture. This includes every aspect of our lives. Christ should be Lord of every part of us—our money, our relationships, our jobs, our family, our free time, our online accounts, everything. How to Become a Genuine ChristianDon’t be afraid of conviction (when the Holy Spirit points out our failings). This is not to condemn you, but to move you in the right direction. The Bible says, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). God wants to “salvage” or “save” your life. He wants to clean up your heart and make it like new. There are two steps here. First, we must have faith in the Living Christ, but we also must confess His Lordship. The confession must be genuine. Matthew 7:21 says, “Not everyone who says to Me, ParentsSpouseHabitsSexChildrenEtc.$$$ Job
7David L. Johnston‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” He must be confessed as Lord. Christ must be in the “Lord” position. Each of our hearts has a throne. It can be ruled by ourselves or by Christ. When we take over the throne, we end up with all sorts of problems. It doesn’t matter if self is on the throne, or our friends, or Satan. These rulers all cause problems. The cure for those problems is to let Christ sit on the throne of our heart to rule unchallenged by anyone or anything. The Evidence of Christ in the Lord PositionThe key to becoming a genuine Christian is to let Christ managerially be active on the throne of our heart. Luke 6:46 says, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” The evidence of Christ on the throne is to see what our actions are. Are we doing God’s will (Matthew 7:21)? Or do we deceive ourselves into thinking that we have Christ on the throne but continue to do what we want to do?The Evidence: Ending the Contest of WillsWe cannot continue to do what we want to do. We must choose to follow God’s will in all areas of our life. Genuine Christianity is making Jesus Lord and doing what he says. You don’t want to make a mistake here. God has big plans for you. There is no reason to be confused about whether or not you are a genuine Christian. The evidence of Christ’s rule of your life will answer the question for you.Additional Reading“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22). See also 2 Corinthians 4:5; Acts 2:26; 1 Corinthians 8:6; and Romans 14:8-9.Action Steps Remember the pie charts? Make one for your own life. Include all your relationships, job, nances as well as anything else that you do. Does Jesus manage each area? Christ can and should manage
8Keys to a Meaningful Lifethem all. Further, if this lesson has opened up questions for you about whether or not you are a true Christian, that’s okay. (It’s actually good!) Talk to your pastor or home group leader about this. If you don’t have either of those, contact us. Share With Others We are all a work in progress. Everyone should assess this important issue. When you are next in a small group or with a trusted friend, that’s a good time to discuss this. Also, be prepared to help those who realize that they aren’t following Jesus as they ought. In a spirit of gentleness as outlined in Galatians 6, come alongside them and pray for them to know Jesus in a real and life-changing way.
God’s Right WayYou will never be in a quandary if you learn to think like God. We have to change our way of thinking. We have to recognize the value and benets of thinking like God. If we do, we will not be confounded about any issue in our lives. Can you imagine the freedom that can bring you?How to Think like God ThinksWe need to recognize the value and the benets of thinking like God. His way of thinking frees us and keeps us from confusion. We need to begin searching the Scriptures for His thoughts as we read and study the Word. Once we nd a section that discusses His thoughts, we can categorize them by topic. As we go through this process, we must reject any and all opposing ideas or notions. (See 2 Timothy 2:15–16.) We should be aware and sensitive to God’s Spirit as we read the Word (John 16:13). Fellowshipping and collaborating with others who are like-minded is of great benet! (See 1 John 1:3, 7.)Transfer God’s Thoughts into Our Hearts and MindsThese thoughts that we have found in our time of studying (the ones that we have categorized) are only in our mind. It is academic. We next need to transfer them into our hearts—from academic to functional. This is the only way that it actually impacts our mental health. King David said, “Your Word have I hidden in my heart” (Psalm 119:11). But how does this happen? Our goal is to have God in all of our thoughts.Memorize the Thoughts of GodPsalm 63:5–6 says, “My soul shall be satised as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.” Memorizing takes time, concentration, and repetition, but is worth
10Keys to a Meaningful Lifethe investment. God’s Spirit wants to help you as you memorize (John 14:26).Meditate on Each ThoughtBiblical meditation creates good mental health. This is not an emptying of our mind, but a lling of our mind with the Word of God. Biblical mediation creates acceptability with God. You don’t want to go through life thinking that you are not accepted by God. Meditation works through this. (See Romans 12.) Biblical meditation produces sweetness (Psalm 104:34). Biblical meditation will be the substance of our conversations and it helps you know the right ways (see Joshua 1:8). Keep in mind that this is a day and night activity. Prosperity and success automatically ow from this meditation. Thinking like God leads to acting like God! As you meditate, you will sense blessedness in your life. Having God’s Word in your heart allows you to thwart any evil spoken against you (1 Peter 3:16). You will be able to defeat any enemy or opposition because you will have a ready word (Psalm 119:77–78). Meditation provides the proper basis for personal prot (1 Timothy 4:15).Additional ReadingPsalm 119 is a great chapter to study, memorize, and meditate. Take some time to read this chapter this week.Action StepsRead Psalm 1. Memorize this psalm. Just start with one phrase at a time. As you memorize, meditate on this chapter.Share with OthersShare with another person what passage of God’s Word you are memorizing and meditating on. Discuss insights that you have seen. Ask for their help in accountability to continue with both your memorization and your meditation.
Our EmotionsWithout emotion there will probably be no motion. Emotions can cause devotion, promotion, and even locomotion, but if our emotions are out of control, we are out of control. Emotions were never meant to be our guidance system. They cannot be allowed to overpower us. This teaching has already set thousands free from emotional bondage. Tried and true, the principles taught in this teaching are vital to living in victory all the time, every time.Feelings Come from Thinking ThoughtsIn the same way that a trailer follows a car, our feelings always follow our thoughts. Thoughts come from what we see; what we smell; what we taste; what we hear; our memory; music; movies; advertisements; self; others; Satan; God; imagination; our nature; our heart. If you think on a thought, a feeling is produced. Then feelings lead to attitudes and/or actions, which in turn lead to consequences. If someone wants you to buy their product, they know you must feel the need for their product. The way to make that happen is to give you a thought (through advertising) that makes you feel the need for this item.If you think on a thought, a feeling will move you to action or attitude. This in turn produces a sense of rightness or a sense of guilt depending on the nature of the thought (at the beginning). Guilt leads to depression.
12Keys to a Meaningful LifeIf we continue to allow this system to feed on itself, we end up with a habit of thinking. We need a Savior to break this cycle (see Romans 7).Casting Down ImaginationsIf God says ee, FLEE! If God says ght, FIGHT! God instructs us to ee things like fornication, pornography, idolatry, youthful lusts and the love of money. If we ght these things, we have to think on them. That feeds the system. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4–5 KJV).Casting Down Every High ThingContinuing from the same verses, it says, “Casting down … every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God.” If you cast down the imaginations and the high things that oppose God, then you don’t have to deal with these things in your emotions or your actions and attitudes. Casting down is an amazing weapon!Bringing into Captivity Every ThoughtThese verses continue by instructing us to bring into captivity every thought, the contents of which are in agreement with the thinking of Christ Himself. We must control the thought processes in the mind (see Romans 12:1–2). Remember, what we sow in our thoughts, we will reap in our actions and attitudes. So, we need to stop the wrong thoughts at the beginning and replace them with
13David L. Johnstonthoughts that comply with Christ thinking. Thought replacement causes feeling replacement.Think on These Things“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8 KJV). These are the only things that we should have in our mind. This is our lter system for what should be allowed in our mind. Our thoughts must meet all this criterion. A thought might be true, but if it is not pure, it should be ltered. Each thought must be checked against every part of this verse. If we add this lter, our actions and attitudes will be in control because our feelings are in control. Our feelings are in control because our mind is in control. Our mind is in control because our lter is working. This system allows us to control our emotions.Additional ReadingReview Romans 6–7 and think about the battle that goes on inside of you. Who do you want to win that battle?Action StepsWork on memorizing and meditating on Philippians 4:8. Then start using this lter on all the thoughts that come to you. If you need to eliminate things in your life so that your lter does not get clogged up, do so.Share with OthersFind a good “lter buddy” who can hold you accountable to using your lter. It does not have to be in every aspect of your life. Start with one area … maybe a TV lter, or a book lter, or a social media lter. Having a “lter buddy” makes it easier to practice ltering.
New GoalsGod has a plan for your life! He has plans for you personally, individually, and specically. Don’t waste your life—discover God’s purpose for your life. His plan for you is exactly what you would choose if you knew all the facts.General Purposes for Your Life Know God. “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death” (Philippians 3:10). God wants us to know Him intimately! Imagine knowing God, Designer of all and Creator of you! Love God. “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the rst and great commandment’” (Matthew 22:37–38). See also 1 Corinthians 2:9. Glorify God. “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20). See also 1 Corinthians 6:20; 10:31. Our purpose is to bring the most glory to God possible. Every aspect of our life must move in the same direction. Smaller decisions should contribute to the same goal—to glorify God. Be Useable (by God). “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its avor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:13–14).Specic Purpose for Your LifeWhen seeking to nd our specic purpose in life, there are steps we can take to discover it.• It may come by prayer and fasting. “As they ministered to the LORD and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me
16Keys to a Meaningful LifeBarnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” (Acts 13:2).• It will advance the kingdom of God. “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love” (Colossians 1:13).• It will benet others. “To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily” (Colossians 1:27–29).• It will come by faithfulness in little things. “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much” (Luke 16:10). See also Matthew 25:21.• It will come by serving others. “But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:11–12).• It will be conrmed by “rhemas.” “This will be the third time I am coming to you. ‘By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established’” (2 Corinthians 13:1). “Rhema” is the Greek word for “Word.” A “rhema” is a “logos” (Scripture/Word from God) quickened by the Spirit to apply to your life. See Matthew 4:4. God’s own Word will conrm the specic purpose for your life. • It will come to you at the right time. “He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season” (Psalm 1:3a).• It will become clearer as time passes. “But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18).• It may not be understood by others. “Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart” (see Luke 2:49–52).
17David L. JohnstonEven when others don’t understand our purpose, we should still stay under our authorities.• It will have to go through a “death” experience. “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain” (John 12:24). A goal or purpose should never be more important than God.• It will be related to your spiritual gift, your Embedded Natural Ability (ENA). “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith … Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them” (Romans 12:3, 6).Additional ReadingThis section helps you discover your purpose in life. There is so much more I would love to share with you. I would like to recommend my book Why You Were Born, which goes into depth on your purpose and your spiritual gift, your Embedded Natural Ability. True joy and fulllment in life comes from discovering your ENA, developing it, and using it!Action StepsHave you sought your purpose in life? Lead OthersEvery one of us is contagious. What we are, inuences others. Reaching out to others can be quite dangerous if we, ourselves, are not authentic followers of the Lord Jesus. A genuine Christian, by any accurate denition, is someone who is “All In!” No half-hearted Christianity is Christian. Authenticity is essential. We reproduce in others what we, ourselves, are. Half-heartedness will produce half-heartedness which equals hypocrisy, fake versions of Christianity. “All In to Reach Out” is our starting point and it will be followed by the “How Tos.” But here is where we start. If we are not living an authentic gospel, we cannot reach others with the truth. We must live for Christ without any reservations. This includes using our resources to share the truth with zero compromise.“The man who trusts God, but with inward reservations, is like a wave of the sea, carried forward by the wind one moment and driven back the next. That sort of man cannot hope to receive anything from God, and the life of a man of divided loyalty will reveal instability at every turn.” (James 1:7–8 PHILLIPS)• Being all in is the essence of the genuine Christian. “Whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:27). See also Luke 14:33.• Being all in is the way to salvage one’s life. “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will nd it. For what prot is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?’” (Matthew 16:24–26).• Being all in is to live by every word of God. “But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone,
20Keys to a Meaningful Lifebut by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”’” (Matthew 4:4 and Luke 4:4). See also Luke 6:46.• Being all in is to continue the maintenance of convictions. “When the enemy comes in like a ood, the Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him” (Isaiah 59:19). See also Jeremiah 50:2. Establish standards (see Jeremiah 50:2). Maintain those standards (see Romans 12:2).• Being all in is to maintain a vertical connection with God’s Spirit. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14). See also John 16:13.• Being all in is to “dehecktify” in order to do time management. Dehecktify—removing the hectic aspects of life in order to control time for the purpose of reaching out. “And He said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses’” (Luke 12:15). See also Colossians 3:1–2.• Being all in means that we are indistractable. “And this I say for your own prot, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction” (1 Corinthians 7:35).• Being all in is necessary in order to reach out. “Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you shers of men’” (Matthew 4:19). You cannot lead where you do not go. And you cannot teach what you do not know.To reach out, we have to use the right motive, manner, medium, and message. Using those, we get attention, create interest, give the message, wait for the Spirit to convict, wait for them to have the desire, and nally close the deal.Additional ReadingThis material is from the rst video in a series of eight videos. Your Ultimate Life Management System - How Jesus’s Inaugural Address (The Sermon on the Mount) Can Change Your LifeThe prophet Jeremiah lamented (Jeremiah 10:23) “I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.” How can we manage our own path, and live life effectively? Could anything be more important than an ef cient, effective, and trustworthy life-management system? We need a life-management system!A life manager must be faithful, smart enough, wise enough, caring enough, and love you suf ciently to be trusted to direct your life. Hence, Jesus! He loves you, which means He is relentlessly choosing your highest good without any personal pro t or bene t as a motive of His own. In addition, Jesus is a life manager who never quits, and never gives up on you no matter what.
