Academic Processional The academic processional, which officially precludes the graduation ceremonies on college and university campuses, is an old and colorful custom which links 21st century education with its early origins. To recognize the achievements of their students, American institutions of higher learning conduct a formal ceremony to award the appropriate degrees earned at the conclusion of prescribed study. The action of taking the certificate or degree, as well as the designation of the day itself, is Commencement. It may be in June, or at the end of other formal periods of study. Various explanations of the term Commencement are possible, though the most likely is that, centuries ago, the bachelor – originally an apprentice – began apprenticeship upon that day, and with the degree of M.A. and Ph.D., the masters and doctors commenced their work upon the day their degrees were conferred. So today, the student, having finished the required preliminary training, sets out upon his or her new career. Ceremonial Mace The mace, which dates back to medieval time when it was used as a weapon, has become a symbol of authority. Traditionally, colleges or universities design their mace to symbolize a theme or message that is central to their mission. The mace is presented by faculty leadership in all formal academic processions in which the institution’s president participates. Upon the four sides of the mace is the official college seal representing the core mission, values and vision of the College, as well as uniquely identifying the College amongst all other educational institutions. The various symbols and images that have been incorporated into the seal’s design have symbolic meaning. The laurel branches are a classic Greek symbol denoting honor and excellence. The torch represents the eternal flame of knowledge and the open book represents knowledge and learning. The radiant sun is a classic symbol for power, life and the shining of the light of truth upon ignorance and it has a local tie-in to Klamath Falls, the “City of Sunshine.” Also represented on the seal is the outline of the state of Oregon, as well as the Roman numeral 1996, the year of KCC’s founding.

Academic Regalia Academic regalia refers to the caps, gowns, and other emblems worn at formal college functions. It has a rich tradition which dates back almost one thousand years. The academic attire is made up of three parts: the head wear, the gown, and the hood. Each aspect of the academic attire has significance and tells something of its wearer’s achievement. The head wear is either a mortarboard or a tam. Most familiar is the square-shaped mortarboard. It is used for the two-year associates, four- year undergraduate degrees, and master’s degrees. It is usually black and can be made of different materials. Six or eight-sided tams, made of velvet, may be worn with a doctoral degree. They may be black or the color of the major field of learning in which the degree was granted. Currently 56 different academic disciplines are assigned their own particular color. Included on the head wear is the tassel. It may either be black (for any degree), or one of the institution’s colors. Gold metallic thread is reserved for governing officials of institutions and individuals with doctorates. The gown or robe is traditionally black, although each institution may assign its own color. Three variations exist. Each signifies a different level of academic achievement. The associate/bachelor’s gown is relatively simple. It has straight lines, long sleeves, and no adornment. The master’s gown is more elaborate. It is easily recognized by its long pointed sleeves. Most distinguished of all is the doctor’s gown. It is marked by four inch velvety edging down the front and around the neck as well as three bars of the same material on the sleeves. The field of study is shown by the color of the velvet. The three bars represent bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s level achievement. A fourth bar is featured only on the gown of college and university presidents. The academic hood is perhaps the most interesting of the three components. It carries the most symbolism. A hood is bestowed with both master’s and doctoral degrees. The type of degree is indicated by the width of the velvet edging and the length of the hood, the doctor’s hood being the widest and longest. The velvet represents the color assigned to the field of study. The college or university which conferred the degree is depicted by the silk inner lining. By wearing the academic regalia, we humbly display our accomplishments and our respect for academic tradition. Partially adapted from American Universities and Colleges, 13th Edition
