Instructors are practicing artists who create a fun, responsive, and supportive studio environment. Current youth programs are listed below. Artists-in-Schools: Reaching over 2,500 local K-12 youth every year through extended school residencies, this program fosters self-esteem, boosts motivation and resilience, and helps build strong school communities. After School: Kids ages 6-11 participate in studio activities including art-making, storytelling, gallery tours, and dialogue to build artistic skills and appreciation for art.Camp Kala Summer Youth Arts: Week-long camps offer children and youth a fun and creative experience where they can explore and develop artwork and artistic skills. Field Trips: Teaching artists guide youth groups through the gallery, observing, exploring themes, and developing critical thinking and visual literacy skills. Kala has two, two-bedroom apartments across the street available for visiting artists.Residencies span from one to twelve months with the option of renewal. Artists pay modest monthly lab fees, subsidized through Kala’s fundraising. Residency applications are accepted online three times per year. Kala seeks applicants who demonstrate conceptual creativity and technical knowledge.custom printingKala offers limited custom printing and editioning services in the print studio and digital lab focusing on projects working in collaboration with artists producing original artwork.fellowships and special residenciesFellowships are awarded to artists from the US and worldwide who demonstrate artistic adventurousness, conceptual creativity, outstanding bodies of work, and whose projects benefit from Kala’s specialized equipment. Artists receive a stipend, one month of housing at Kala’s apartments, a complimentary art class, technical support, 24/7 use of Kala’s facilities for one to nine months, a culminating exhibition as a cohort in the Kala Gallery, and opportunities to engage the public in discourse. Kala offers additional fellowships with stipends that depend on funding and community partnerships and currently include residencies through CEC Artslink, California College of the Arts (CCA) Hamaguchi award, Artist Communities Alliance/McKnight cohort, and special programs for Parent Artists, Media Artists, Veteran Artists, and a Municipal Artist-in-Residence collaboration with the City of Berkeley.the kala galleryA light-filled 2,200-square-foot exhibition space, Kala Gallery presents five to six exhibitions each year highlighting work by both emerging and recognized artists. Artists-in-Schools: Reaching over 2,500 local K-12 youth every year through extended school residencies, this program fosters self-esteem, boosts motivation and resilience, and helps build strong school communities. After School: Kids ages 6-11 participate in studio activities including art-making, storytelling, gallery tours, and dialogue to build artistic skills and appreciation for art.Camp Kala Summer Youth Arts: Week-long camps offer children and youth a fun and creative experience where they can explore and develop artwork and artistic skills. Field Trips: Teaching artists guide youth groups through the gallery, observing, exploring themes, and developing critical thinking and visual literacy skills.
