Saints Peter and Paul This year, we have the opportunity to celebrate the feast of Saints Peter & Paul on a Sunday. These two very different men were pillars of the early Church, and their message is still a vital resource today. Despite their imperfections, both were chosen by Jesus. To understand their passionate commitment to their calling, we need to reflect carefully on today’s Gospel. Jesus asks his disciples, and us, the critical question: Who do you say that I am?” This question focuses us on the kind of relationship we want with Jesus. Who is he for us? At different point in our faith journey, our responses to the question can vary depending on our own circumstances, maturity and stage of life. Perhaps spiritual growth is rarely a straight path without any serious questions, doubts or even crises. In the end, what is always important is to offer an honest response to Jesus. All healthy relationships are based on integrity, truth and free choice. The goal need not be perfection, but an openness to change and growth. We are called to trust that Jesus always loves and accepts us exactly as we are. He waits to invite us, as with Peter & Paul, to a deeper relationship with him and to a mission to serve others. Prayer Blankets will be available after all Masses the weekend of July 5/6. The mission of prayer blankets is to bring comfort and peace to those in difficult situations. As prayer blankets are created, prayers are said for whoever will receive it. Prayer blankets are available to anyone at no charge. You can also get a Prayer Blanket by calling Lynne at (306) 631-1257. Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus papam! I announce to you a great joy; we have a pope! Following these words from Dominique Cardinal Mamberti on the balcony of St. Peter’s in Rome, the entire world was introduced to Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Cardinal Prevost. While the Holy Father has the specific obligation of making Christ known to the entire world, as lay Catholics we share in that same mission, as the Vatican II document Gaudium et spes (Joy and Hope) describes it, the laity are “not only bound to penetrate the world with a Christian spirit, but are also called to be witnesses to Christ in all things in the midst of human society.” (paragraph 43). One of the ways that lay people can carry out this mission and assist the Holy Father in his mission is to pray for him. In fact, the mission to pray for one another as Christians comes directly from Sacred Scripture in the admonition of great saints such as St James (5.16) and St Paul (Gal 6.2, Eph 6,18-20) who also leads by example telling the Faithful that he prays for them (Eph 3.14-21, Col 1.9-12). In addition to receiving the graces that are obtained by both the person prayed for and the person praying, there is a great consolation to know that we have people praying for us. To this end, at St Joseph’s we are preparing a great Spiritual Bouquet for Pope Leo and will be sending it to him via the Papal Nuncio at its conclusion. We encourage members of the parish to track their own prayers as they offer particular prayers for the Holy Father (rosaries, Our Fathers, their prayers while attending Mass, and so on) and also any sacrifices that they may make for his intentions and needs (fasting, abstaining from meat, abstaining from sweets, and so on) so that they may be collected and sent as part of the same great spiritual bouquet for Our new Holy Father, Leo, and for his ministry in the Church. If you have prayers or sacrifices to add to the spiritual bouquet (cards will be available in the Church), please drop them into the collection basket Deacon Lamont Dyck Pastoral Assistant/Faith Formation St. Joseph's Parish Church Brother Knights, Please sign up for the Sidewalk Days garbage collection detail. Pope’s Monthly Prayer Intentions – July For formation in discernment Let us pray that we might again learn how to discern, to know how to choose paths of life, and reject everything that leads us away from Christ and the Gospel.
