Pentecost Sunday I rushed home in tears. Today, I can’t remember the exact reason why I left work early. All I know is I didn’t want others to see me upset. There was a period in my life when depression and anxiety seemed so powerful that I felt I couldn’t handle them. That incident was a catalyst in reinforcing my resolve to get help and be healthier in mind, body and spirit. When checking to see the severity of my illness, I remember one counsellor asking what stopped me from giving up on life. I told her it was because I was a Catholic. Today’s readings help us realize the often-overlooked role of the Holy Spirit. Although I felt hopeless at times. I knew I wasn’t alone. Shortly after his resurrection, Jesus sent a powerful advocate who will be with us forever. The Holy Spirit empowers us, as children of God, with the gifts we need to have the strength and courage to take up our cross. On Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit, who gave the fearful disciples the ability to spread the Good News. We give thanks for God’s gifts of the Holy Spirit, who will guide us in our mission to bravely preserve and live according to God's will. Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus papam! I announce to you a great joy; we have a pope! Following these words from Dominique Cardinal Mamberti on the balcony of St. Peter’s in Rome, the entire world was introduced to Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Cardinal Prevost. While the Holy Father has the specific obligation of making Christ known to the entire world, as lay Catholics we share in that same mission, as the Vatican II document Gaudium et spes (Joy and Hope) describes it, the laity are “not only bound to penetrate the world with a Christian spirit, but are also called to be witnesses to Christ in all things in the midst of human society.” (paragraph 43). One of the ways that lay people can carry out this mission and assist the Holy Father in his mission is to pray for him. In fact, the mission to pray for one another as Christians comes directly from Sacred Scripture in the admonition of great saints such as St James (5.16) and St Paul (Gal 6.2, Eph 6,18-20) who also leads by example telling the Faithful that he prays for them (Eph 3.14-21, Col 1.9-12). In addition to receiving the graces that are obtained by both the person prayed for and the person praying, there is a great consolation to know that we have people praying for us. To this end, at St Joseph’s we are preparing a great Spiritual Bouquet for Pope Leo and will be sending it to him via the Papal Nuncio at its conclusion. We encourage members of the parish to track their own prayers as they offer particular prayers for the Holy Father (rosaries, Our Fathers, their prayers while attending Mass, and so on) and also any sacrifices that they may make for his intentions and needs (fasting, abstaining from meat, abstaining from sweets, and so on) so that they may be collected and sent as part of the same great spiritual bouquet for Our new Holy Father, Leo, and for his ministry in the Church. If you have prayers or sacrifices to add to the spiritual bouquet (cards will be available in the Church), please drop them into the collection basket Deacon Lamont Dyck Pastoral Assistant/Faith Formation St. Joseph's Parish Church The CWL appreciates donations from anyone to the CWL Sarcan Drop and Go Virtual Bottle Drive. The Jubilee Logo The logo shows four stylized figures, representing all of humanity, coming from the four corners of the earth. They embrace each other to indicate the solidarity and fraternity which should unite all peoples. The figure at the front is holding onto the cross. It is not only the sign of the faith which this lead figure embraces, but also of hope, which can never be abandoned, because we are always in need of hope, especially in our moments of greatest need. There are the rough waves under the figures, symbolizing the fact that life’s pilgrimage does not always go smoothly in calm waters. Often, the circumstances of daily life and events in the wider world require a greater call to hope. That’s why we should pay special attention to the lower part of the cross, which has been elongated and turned into the shape of an anchor, which is let down into the waves. The anchor is well known as a symbol of hope. In maritime jargon, the ‘anchor of hope’ refers to the reserve anchor used by vessels involved in emergency manoeuvres to stabilise the ship during storms. It is worth noting that the image illustrates the pilgrim’s journey not as an individual undertaking, but rather as something communal, marked by an increasing dynamism leading one ever closer to the cross. The cross in the logo is by no means static, but it is also dynamic. It bends down towards humanity, not leaving human beings alone, but stretching out to them to offer the certainty of its presence and the security of hope. At the bottom of the logo is the motto of the 2025 Jubilee Year: Peregrinantes in Spem (Pilgrims in hope), represented in green letters.
