The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved AfricanAmericans people were told they were free by executive decree. A century and ahalf later, people across the United States continue to celebrate the day, which isnow a federal holiday in the stateOn June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the “Juneteenth NationalIndependence Day Act,” designating Juneteenth National Independence Day as alegal public holiday. National Gun Violence Awareness day willtake place on June 7th, wear an orange shirtto show your support. Wear Orange will be taking place June 7th-9thGUN VIOLENCEAWARENESS MONTHOn January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s secondinaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playgroundin Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her lifeby wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselvesand others. Wear Orange is now observed every June.
