THE DIVOT | GOLFBACK TO CONTENTSThe list of unwritten rules for golf islong and obscure. Most golferslearn these rules from moreexperienced golfers, but there’s nocomplete and universally acceptedlist. How and when to play throughis a topic that is often discussed, soI will set the record straight andgive you a guide to playing throughon the golf course.First, we must understand when itis appropriate for a group to playthrough another group on the golfcourse. From holes one throughfifteen, a group should be allowedto play through another group. Byhole sixteen, there is nooverwhelming benefit to playingthrough another group, so golfersshould simply enjoy the last fewholes. Spacing on the golf coursemust also be considered. If there isnot at least one full hole open infront of a group, then a group doesnot need to extend the invitation tothe group behind them, and thegroup behind should not ask to playthrough either. The only exceptionwould be if a group could clearlysee several open holes beyond thetwo groups in front of them, whichwould be a rare occurrence. If thatis the case, then the group wantingto play through should ask eachgroup’s permission to skip thoseholes and move to the open hole infront, so neither group will everhave to wait. Second, how and when do you ask agroup to play through on the course? The lead group should be aware of thegroups behind them. If the groupbehind is waiting and there is an openhole in front of the lead group, the leadgroup should invite the other group toplay through. To minimize wait time, the lead group should tee off, and thenwait by the tee to allow the groupbehind them to tee off and pass. If thelead group does not invite the groupbehind to play through when there isan open hole in front, it is appropriatefor the group behind to politely ask thelead group for permission to playthrough them. For some golfers, thissituation can feel confrontational, buteveryone has the same goal of having agreat time. If the ask is polite andfriendly, then the response is usuallypolite and friendly in return. Most pace-of-play situations on thecourse are the result of a lack ofcommunication. Often, groups waitbehind a slower group for a few holeswithout being invited to play through,so tension continues to rise until itreaches the boiling point. In many ofthose scenarios, the lead group alsofeels pressured to play faster, soneither group can enjoy their round.Someone simply needs to start theconversation. The next time you are inthat situation communicate with theother group as soon as possible, andeveryone will be able to enjoy theirround of golf. Tennis TipTeam News & Results Serve Rallies GroundstrokesAs we move through May with its gray skies and heavy fog, it's a greattime to reflect on how weather conditions can impact our game. Thecold and heavy conditions we've seen at the French Open inspired meto consider how we can use the weather to our advantage on the court. In cooler, heavier air, the ball doesn't travel asfast. Focus on adding more spin to your serves tomaintain control and consistency. A well-placedspin serve can be more effective than sheerpower in these conditions. Look to stretch youropponent out wide and finish points off withyour second shot. With the dampness, rallies can last longer. Staylow, keep your knees bent, and be patient.Construct your points thoughtfully, aiming forprecision rather than trying to hit winners tooearly. Use angles to open the court rather thanblasting your way through opponents. Aim to drive through the ball, as heavy spin ismost effective in hot, dry conditions. In cooler, damp weather, a more penetrating shot will helpyou maintain control and keep your opponent onthe defensive. Drop shots will also be moreeffective as the ball wont bounce as high. This is the first time a team has successfully won 3 out of the 4 divisions—an incredible achievement by our outstanding ladies' teams. Men'sInterclub kicked off with some close matches in the A league. The B's hada slow start but finished the month with a win, looking to improve theirstanding on the table. The Super Seniors finished their season on a high, beating the City Rocket men to end an improved season. Special thanks toall our spring team captains for organizing and volunteering their time tomake LC a great place for Interclub play. THE DIVOTBACK TO CONTENTSVIEW FULL TEAM NEWS AND RESULTS

Words of Wellnesswith jarratT rousei friends and happy June! I was talking with one of myclients recently and she thought that tenacity anddetermination would be great topics for my nextwords of wellness. I loved that idea so here we are!The French Open is going on right now and running alongone of the stands on Court Philippe Chatrier, which is aquote attributed to Roland Garros. "Victory belongs to themost tenacious," proclaimed Garros, the pioneering 20th-century aviator after whom the French Open venue is named.Tenacity is the quality displayed by someone who just won'tquit — who keeps trying until they reach their goal. Thequote spoke to me because it focuses on the fact that thevictor or winner is determined by effort and effort alone. Wecan all control effort and it breathes hope and opportunityinto every challenge someone might face. In everyday life, tenacity means pushing through setbacks, whether they areprofessional, personal, or health-related. It is aboutmaintaining focus and effort despite the temptation to giveup. Tenacity fuels the ability to keep going, transformingfailures into stepping stones towards success. Determinationcomplements tenacity by providing the inner drive necessaryto set and achieve goals.
