BulletinJuly 2020• 5DDeeaarr RReeaaddeerrssTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. Here is the Congress 2023 edition, resplendent in technicolour. I certainly hope, if you attended, then you will nd your photograph somewhere on pages 15 – 45. I amoptimistic everyone who was there is included. As you can see it was a very full programme –loads of workshops and presentations and lots of hard work. However, there was also plenty of fun to be had across the social events, the traditional opening of Congress Trade wine reception, a festival food night on Wednesday and the Gala dinner dance on Thursday night. One of the rst things that happened on Tuesday evening was the Annual General Meeting, see pages 7 – 12. There was a great deal of discussion throughout Congress about education and the changes to the routes of gaining the Fellowship that are going to be made. I am looking forward to reporting on the developments in education in future Bulletin editions.Without further ado, I am going to let you carry on reading this bumper Congress edition.IAT BULLETIN JUNE23.indd 5IAT BULLETIN JUNE23.indd 5 01/06/2023 12:1901/06/2023 12:19

Bulletin8 • June 2023 1. Apologies Apologies were received from Charlie Chambers.2. Minutes of the 36th Annual General Meeting of the Institute of Animal Technology held on 29th March 2022 The minutes were unanimously accepted as a true and accurate record of the meeting.3. Matters arising from the minutesSimon Cumming (SAC) reported that the minutes had been published in full on the website, and an abridged version in the Bulletin (Vol 58 No 6).There were no matters arising.4. Correspondence There was no correspondence to be covered under this item.5. Annual Report SAC spoke to the Annual Report. The full report is available on the IAT website in the Members’ Section. There were no questions on the annual report.6. Financial ReportGlyn Fisher (GF) spoke to the IAT annual accountsfor 2022.GF highlighted the fact that a successful Congress was very important to the existence of the IAT. After three years of losses, GF was pleased to announce that a profi t had been made in 2022.GF wanted to highlight how educational income and expenditure is reported in the annual accounts, as this can be misleading. When you consider the total amount related purely to education, IAT Education made a loss of £40,962. GF explained that to be an Ofqual Awarding Body does cost money, but one of the main IAT objectives is education of technicians, so that is where money should be spent. GF reported that the IAT can put education syllabuses in place but will then rely on members and employers putting people through the courses.Simon CummingGlynFisherGlynFisherSimon CummingIAT BULLETIN JUNE23.indd 8IAT BULLETIN JUNE23.indd 8 01/06/2023 12:1901/06/2023 12:19
BulletinJune 2023 • 9GF reported that the fi nal accounts for AST2020 have now been released. Some monies had been held back for companies who had not requested a refund but the accountant had now advised that these monies can be released. The monies will be split, as agreed, between IAT and LASA. This will be the last time AST2020 will appear in the annual accounts.GF announced that membership fees for 2024 will increase by £2.50 to £52.50. Membership fees have not increased in recent years but withexternal costs rising we do need the increase. All other fees, however, will remain the same for the coming year. The Financial Report and the Audited Accounts were then proposed. Proposed: Robin Labesse Seconded: Steven CubittCarried unanimously.7. Appointment of the AuditorThe Treasurer proposed that King Loose be re-appointed as auditors for 2023. They have done a sterling job in 2022 and have been a great asset to the Institute. Proposed: Glyn Fisher Seconded: Wendy SteelCarried unanimously.8. Education proposal for Fellowship by Thesis Steven Cubitt (SJC) spoke to the proposal. SJC reported that in 2007 the previous Fellowshipsystem ended. Since then, a new HE system has been introduced and this revised version would be launched by Ken Applebee and Carmen Abela during their presentation – IAT Education – A new beginning academic year 2023-24.SJC reported that in 2009, when the new Level 2 and 3 qualifi cations were launched, the Fellowship by thesis was revised. Applicants needed to have the IAT level 3, including fi ve years of experience in addition to their degree in Biological Sciences. There was no other route to Fellowship. Since then, seven or eight people have started the process but only one has been successful.8. Bulletin10 • June 2023 The new system will be in place by September and therefore SJC proposed that the current system of Fellowship by thesis be closed. Anyone currently undergoing the process will have two years to complete.Martin Heath queried the fact that the proposal was to close a system and replace it, without knowing what the replacement would be. LH suggested that there would need to be an element of trust, but that the new system is already in existence in the HE qualifications and the revised HE levels would make the process easier. The Financial Report and the Audited Accounts were then proposed. Proposed: Council Seconded: Adrian Woodhouse Carried unanimously.9. Election of Officers Linda Horan (LH), Chair IAT Council, took over as Chair of the AGM for the appointment of the President.9.i President Council wished to propose Robin Lovell-Badge CBE FRS as President for the forthcoming year. Any Other BusinessStuart Mackrell asked if the reduction in membership numbers was a worrying trend. SAC reported that he thought there had been a loss of technicians during COVID, but that membership numbers do fl uctuate year on year. SAC would investigate it further though. LH suggested that the shift did refl ect the industry. It was also suggested that loss of EU grants due to Brexit may be having an effect. There being no other business, RG thanked everyone for attending and wished them a pleasant evening at the Opening of the Trade exhibition. The meeting was closed at 18.37 hours.SITUATIONS VACANTVisit the Careers pages on the IAT Website for the latest vacancieshttps://www.iat.org.uk/vacanciesRecruitment advertising details from mail@prcassoc.co.ukIt’s OK … NOT TO BE OKAY …IAT – Virtual Network Support ForumHas it not been your day, your week, your month or even your year? However due to the pandemic, the date was delayed until 2023 – and it was well worth the wait! This is a superb venue, built into a hillside in South Wales. It was a little confusing to get into a lift at the conference centre level and go up to an underground car park!Set up began early on Monday morning with the marking up of the Trade Exhibition Hall. This invitation was especially aimed at those attending Congress for the fi rst time, or attending alone but everyone was welcome. Members of the Congress Committee then introduced everyone to Congress and ran through some housekeeping, how Congress works, what happens when and, very importantly, how to fi nd a seat for the Gala Dinner. Delegates were also informed of who to contact in case of any queries or concerns. The aim of this ‘Welcome’ is to ensure that everyone is included and that no-one is left on their own. The AGM took place at 18.00 hours and was attended by 57 members. Prof Sir Richard Gardner chaired the AGM, as the President, Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, was unable to attend. Prof Gardner is the Past President, so was well placed to step into the breach. AGM attendees received highlights of the IAT Annual Report and a fi nancial report for the year 2022. The next morning saw everyone depart from Celtic Manor, heading back home after another very successful Congress. Thank you to the companies who sponsorawards, delegate giveaways and sessions – the IAT really do appreciate all your support. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the event – without your attendance there would not be an event.Congress FeedbackFollowing Congress, we sent out a feedback survey. Thank you to the 130 people who responded. Your feedback does help us to make plans for future events and if anyone wants to contact the Congress committee about any aspects, you can do so via congress@iat.org.ukThis year’s feedback was very positive, with nearly all respondents feeling that the venue was a good one and that keeping all delegates together is a positive move. However, since many delegates are now choosing to arrange their own accommodation, future Congress packages will not include accommodation. Most respondents also found the Congress App to be very useful, although some preferred to use the Congress Handbook as a source of information.Presentations were well attended and the main reason given for non-attendance at these sessions was that the respondent was a trade exhibitor and so did notattend the Platform Presentations. There were some very interesting suggestionsfor future presentation ideas and these will be followed up where possible.BulletinIAT BULLETIN JUNE23.indd 45IAT BULLETIN JUNE23.indd 45 01/06/2023 12:2901/06/2023 12:29
