Bulletin4 • June 2022 TLC Twenty Year AnniversaryAugust 2002 The Learning Curve (TLC) was set up with Companies House and was officially born. The company was a one-man band at that time with a vision of educating, improving, making aware and changing the way people considered laboratory animal usage. My twenty-four years at Wellcome Research / GlaxoWellcome and GlaxoSmithKline taught me everything I needed to know about laboratory animal welfare, together with a couple of years as a veterinary nurse in the early days.Putting together courses, such as the Home Office Personal Licensee course and my focus on the Named Animal Care and Welfare course formally known as the Named Person in Day-to-Day Care. The Institute of Animal Technology level 2 and 3 diplomas have also taken pride and hopefully the many Animal Technologists that have completed these courses have gone on to be our current managers and welfarists. My passion to encourage and give personal advice to Animal Technologists, support staff and scientists due to my extensive experience with many species of laboratory animals, enabled me to foresee the potential in the scientific world to consider, promote and actively carry out the highest standard of animal welfare and respect. The Learning Curve has always had a very high ethical philosophy and very high ethical standards, with no short cuts or excuses when it comes to good science and good animal welfare.Over the years TLC has grown into a company which currently employs seven full time staff, including a full-time veterinarian and several very experienced people that help on a consultancy basis, all of which are highly qualified and experienced Animal Technologists which give the company that personal, knowledgeable basis that underpins the success of The Learning Curve.I would personally like to thank everyone that has worked with The Learning Curve over the years, to all the attendees on our courses and especially to all my staff who have worked tirelessly to maintain very high standards and have helped me to have a company that I am very proud of.Thank you!Martin Heath MSc FRSB FIAT FIScT RAnTech PTLLSManaging Director thAnniversaryWe have yourfuture at heart

There was something for everyone – very interesting workshops and presentations, as well as the trade show and social events and it is all featured. I want to congratulate all the prize winners, including fi rst time presenters, poster prizes and the Andrew Blake Tribute Award winners, which included both this year’s and last year’s winners being presented with the award, due to Congress being a virtual event last year (see pages 48 – 50).Trade ran their traditional Trade Passport Competition, and again well done to the two winners of that (see pages 57 – 58).We have several people talking about their experiences in Harrogate, Ryan Goldsmith and Roxie Wood talk about their Congress experiences as fi rst-time attendees, see pages 60 and 62. The Northwest Branch have also produced a report of four of their members attending Congress for the fi rst time as well! See pages 63 – 64. The AGM took place at Congress this year and we have the abridged minutes., most people attended in person but some people attending virtually. See pages 9 – 12.If you are wondering if there is anything but Congress news in this issue, yes there is, March also saw the welcome return of Tech Month and we are featuring a report on pages 7 – 8. I loved all the origami animals that sprang up in facilities, especially the fi sh, but I might be a bit biased!TLC Twenty Year AnniversaryAugust 2002 The Learning Curve (TLC) was set up with Companies House and was officially born. BulletinJune 2022 • 25The Ice Breaker session was introduced to allow those who are new, or perhaps on their own, to meet their fellow delegates in a more relaxed and informal setting. This session has grown in popularity year on year and this year was completely full. Whilst it was not possible to have the usual games involving eating chocolate with chopsticks or playing pass the balloon, there was a chance to have a go at ‘Enrich it!’ – a collaborative game design session. This is a protype Tetris-style tabletop game, which asks players to add enrichment items to a cage. This game will form part of the Animal Research Nexus public engagement portfolio and players had the opportunity to provide feedback and add content and design. The fi nal version will be freely available for anyone to use for outreach, engagement and educational purposes. The thirty sixth annual AGM took place at 18.00 hours on Tuesday evening. Full minutes of the AGM were published on the IAT website in April and an abridged version can be found in this issue of the IAT Bulletin (June 2022 issue). Two new Council members were welcomed to Council, Ken Applebee who returns after a short break and Toby Sanders. Two presentations were also made at the AGM. The fi rst was to Ken Applebee who has been made a Life Member of the Institute. Ken was presented with his plaque by the IAT President, Professor Robin Lovell-Badge. The plaque was due to be presented in 2021 but as Congress 2021 was a virtual event, the presentation was held over to Congress 2022.

Page 26

Bulletin26 • June 2022 This was also the case for the presentation to Stuart Mackrell, who was presented with his plaque for Honorary membership. Stuart was proposed by the Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex Branch for his many years of service to the IAT. Stuart also received his delayed plaque from Professor Lovell-Badge. For more information on the AGM see the minutes on pages 9 – 12.Following the AGM was the Opening of the Trade Exhibition. Always a fun night, this year was made all the more entertaining due to there being no Congress in the previous two years. All the exhibitors were keen to attract delegates and there were competitions and enticements galore. The Trade Passport competition took place over the three days, with two chances of winning a £100 Amazon gift voucher up for grabs. The two lucky winners were: Paul Johnson and Mollie Millington. More information about this can befound on pages 57 – 58.

Thank you to all the companies who paid to take part.Alan Graham, Chair of the IAT Congress Committee offi cially opened Congress on Wednesday morning. He introduced Stephen Barnett as the Chair for the initial session, namely the Stephen Barnett First Time Presenters’ Session, kindly sponsored by Marshall BioResources. Stephen has been involved with the IAT for many years as a training provider, examiner and advisor for the IAT qualifi cations. Many IAT members owe a great deal of gratitude to Stephen for his patience and commitment to their education. The IAT were very keen to recognise Stephen’s hard work and dedication. It was therefore decided that the First Time Presenters’ Session at Congress be named after him, and hope that this recognition will remind everyone of his tireless commitment to our Institute. Three presenters took part in this session, with the judges deciding that Claire Dobinson from the Institute of Cancer Research was the winning presenter. Claire received a monetary award of £250 as her prize.

BulletinJune 2022 • 39The afternoon session again included the how to talk about animal research workshop, plus best practice in breeding laboratory mice, Culture of Care training resources and helping AWERBs to promote a Culture of Care. Following a buffet meal, Wednesday evening saw a very welcome return to normality in the shape of Ken’s Quiz. Often the highlight of Congress, Ken puts his heart and soul into fi nding a diverse range of questions to tax the most well informed brain! This year Ken brought in outside assistance for a music round, so thank you to Mirren Allen for Round One! The Quiz Night was kindly sponsored by CC Tech, and it was a total coincidence that the team who won consisted of some CC Tech members. It was a well-deserved win and the team enjoyed their bottles of fi zz. The runners up received a mixture of wines and Cadbury Crème Eggs went to the team who came last (but not least!).

Rosie’s paper was entitled ‘Exploring environmental enrichment as a tool for assessing cognitive degeneration in ageing mice’. Robin was presented with Rosie’s award at the Close of Congress ceremony.Kelly Patterson then gave a presentation entitled ‘Refl ections of 30 years in Laboratory Animal Science’. Kelly is the AAALAC Fellowship winner and had been due to attend AST2020 as part of her award. However, due to COVID, the trip had been postponed to 2022. Kelly had spent the previous week visiting establishments in the UK, before attending Congress. Poster authors had their posters on display throughout Congress, and were also in attendance at their posters to answer queries or discuss content further during Wednesday morning refreshment break, and again at the Thursday afternoon tea break. This is a chance for authors to expand on their posters and chat on a one-to-one basis with delegates. Bulletin

Bulletin46 • June 2022 Poster presentations also took place on Thursday, with two authors presenting a more in depth look at their posters. Firstly, Tom Fewlass from the University of York presented his poster ‘Let us choose which food enrichment we prefer – enrichment from a mouse’s perspective’. Melanie Davenport then presented her poster ‘A refinement in hamster breeding – creating a sustainable colony for vaccine research’.This year the prize for Best Poster was extended to offer two prizes – one for the best scientific based poster and the other for the best poster on environmental enrichment. Both prizes are kindly sponsored by LBS (Serving Biotechnology). Posters are judged according to criteria for best content, clarity and quality of science. The criteria include improvement in animal welfare, innovation, ease of replication of work, presentation and layout. The Poster Prize for Environmental Enrichment was awarded to Claire Dobinson for her poster ‘The use of portable ultrasound imaging to refine the technique of tumour detection in neuroblastoma mouse models’. The judges said: “Excellent information. Easy to read with first class visuals. Easy to understand. Clearly laid out. Major refinement which although limited to specialist facilities will benefit large numbers of animals.”The Poster Prize for the best scientific basis was awarded to Hayley Robinson for her poster ‘Exploring treatments for Idiopathic Chronic Diarrhoea (ICD) in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta): A systematic Review’. The judges said of Hayley’s poster: “Systematic approach. All components of a paper present. Lots of information. Easy to read and good visuals. High impact on welfare of a highly sentient animal with widespread application despite being a specialist species.” Awards were made at the Close of Congress to the two winners. The judges also highly commended two posters: ‘Investigating a refined method for identifying domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus)’ by Paul Smith. The judges commented: “Not new technology but excellent study to improve impact of id devices on a large number of animals. Very clear layout, easy to read and good visuals.” ‘Validating in-cage mouse enrichment’ by Zoe Beresford, Chelsea Burbidge and Valentina Serrano-Gallego. The judges said “Well structured with good layout. Easy to read with good visuals. Results could be highly beneficial with widespread impact.”

BulletinJune 2022 • 47This year’s Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture was delivered by Tullis Matson. His paper was entitled ‘The Living Biobank – animal cell and tissue preservation for future regeneration’, and was an overview of equine breeding and a look to the past, present and future of the industry. The presentation also explored the transfer of equine AI technology to other species, including to aid in conservation of wild and endangered animals. Tullis gave an entertaining and very informative talk about the development of AI techniques and the future of exotic species semen collection and the work of the charity Nature’s SAFE in biobanking to Save Animals From Extinction. The Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture is kindly sponsored by IPS Products Ltd, and a donation was also made to Nature’s SAFE, which we were told would help six endangered species to be cryopreserved. The Close of Congress took place after the Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture.

BulletinJune 2022 • 51We would also like to thank Andy Dickinson from Surrey Diagnostics Ltd, for his kind donation to the IAT. Andy ran a competition on the SDL stand to guess the number of Easter eggs in a jar. It cost £1 a go and the money was split between the UNICEF Ukraine Crisis Appeal, the IAT and the World Scout Jamboree 2023. Andy donated £22 to the IAT and this was added to the Branch Raffl e funds. The Branch Raffl e raised £692 for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Appeal. IAT Council agreed to make this up to £1000. This has now been donated to the DEC Ukraine appeal. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and supported the raffl e.Linda Horan, CEO and Chair of Council, closed Congress 2022. Linda thanked everyone for attending and looked forward to seeing everyone at Congress 2023! As is customary Congress concluded with the Gala Dinner. This was held in the Royal Hall, which is a beautiful building, albeit a little on the cold side in the bar areas. The dinner was served at the table but did suffer in passing through the cold corridors, resulting in disappointingly colder than expected fare. Things did heat up with the start of the live music. Hard to Handle played a good selection of music, designed to get everyone up on their feet. The band had been stuck in traffi c and arrived late to the venue. This meant they had not had time to carry out sound checks, so were a little bass heavy until they settled into the evening.

Bulletin54 • June 2022 Thank you to everyone who attended – both delegates and trade exhibitors. Without delegates and trade there would be no Congress, so thank you. Your support is very much appreciated. As always, we circulated a feedback survey to all attendees. Thank you to everyone who responded. This does help with future planning. This year’s feedback led to some frequently covered topics and we have highlighted these and responded below.Feedback Survey resultsThe response rate to the survey was 30%. This covered a cross section of age ranges and included both IAT members and non-members.The location of Congress 2022 was rated very highly, with 98.6% of respondents rating it as excellent or good. The scientific presentations, workshops and social events also all scored very highly. The worst performing aspects were the food and refreshments. These were not of a sufficiently high standard, nor felt to be of good value. The Congress Committee will take this back to the venue, as they agreed that the food and refreshments were not as expected.Over 95% of respondents found the registration process easy or very easy. There were some issues where the bookings were made by an administrator or supervisor, making it more difficult for the delegate to access their details. Updating details also posed some issues and again these will be rectified going forward. Only one delegate found the check-in process difficult and the same was true for ease of use of the Congress App.Most respondents felt the topics covered by the scientific programme were sufficient. There were suggestions for future topics, which the Congress Committee will explore further. However, if there are areas you think are underrepresented, please suggest people who can rectify this to the Committee, who would be very happy to follow up.There were some issues with booking workshops, whereby the booking system asked delegates to pay for workshops. This glitch was rectified but did cause some concern for delegates. This will be corrected for Congress 2023. Workshops were consistently rated as excellent or good, with only one or two people rating them at a lower standard.

BulletinJune 2022 • 55There was a comment about not being a fan of jackets and hating ties, which was made in reference to the Gala Dinner. Jackets and ties were not the dress code for the Gala Dinner this year. The handbook did state “Smart, casual dress” but no mention of jackets or ties. This was changed to allow a more informal dress code if people preferred. The Committee will look at all the feedback responses and make any improvements they can for future eventsThank you to all those who completed the survey. Bulletin58 • June 2022 Paul said of his win:“As my fi rst time attending the IAT Congress I was unsure what to expect from the trade event area. Like many fellow attendees, I work with specifi c species in a focussed work role and naturally gravitated to the trade stands I saw as most relevant. Luckily, the quiz encourages you to talk to all the exhibitors, regardless of their specialisation. I would have missed out on a lot of additional information and fun facts without this great reason to visit all thetrade stands. I would highly recommend giving the quiz a go, it was easy to take part and fun to do, with a hefty prize as a welcome bonus.”Mollie said of her win:“Even though I have been a unit manager for over 8 years, this was the fi rst time I have attended IAT Congress. The passport made it so easy to talk with exhibitors and fi nd out if their products would help my team or animals. Working with aquatic species sometimes means it is challenging to fi nd what we need! There was plenty of time over the course of the week to keep chipping away at the passport challenge. I am so glad I did.”As well as 2 prizes of £100 vouchers, this year’s competition raised an additional £282.14 which has been donated to AS-ET.Reporter: Nicky WindowsRyan Hill from Datesand with Mollie.

Bulletin60 • June 2022 Impressions of Congress 2022 from a First Time Participant After over two years of working through a difficult pandemic the IAT Congress was a brilliant change of pace for me. It was my first experience at such an event and was a great opportunity to meet and introduce myself to the world of Animal Technology. It was a privilege to present my work in front of my peers who appreciated the concepts that I have been working on and that felt truly wonderful. It was also amazing to see what work other facilities, labs and research units had also been working on.The workshops were most informative with ‘Time to get Schooled: An Introduction to Zebrafish’ being a great place to start, as it strongly laid the fundamentals of Zebrafish in animal research. The ‘Environmental Enrichment for Laboratory Zebrafish’ workshop gave a brilliant insight in to how I can improve the welfare for the animals under my care and provided great ideas which can be brought back to my team. ‘How to help your AWERB’, the ‘AWERB Culture of Care’ and ‘Careful stories: Culture of Care Training Resources ‘were great reminders of the value of supporting a culture of care within a working environment and is something I wish to improve upon, where possible, within my own team. The social events, such as the Big Quiz and the Gala Dinner were wonderful opportunities to meet a wide variety of people from across the country. It was amazing to hear people’s thoughts and options about their own animal facilities and has helped me to understand how vast this community is.It was interesting to see as a Fish Technician what other products are available for other animals used in animal research, as this is an area I rarely see.Going to the IAT Congress has also helped me understand where I am going as an Animal Technician and how I could help my team in different roles. I hope to attend future events, get to know people better in this community and taking a more active role in the IAT.Reporter: Ryan Goldsmith

BulletinJune 2022 • 61A First Time Attendee’s Perspective on CongressIn March I had the honour of attending the IAT Congress in Harrogate, which for me was the very fi rst time there. Harrogate is a beautiful town and we were lucky to even have it snow while we were there! I attended as part of a group of fi ve colleagues from Imperial College London, who have a variety of roles across the campuses. Like me, it was their fi rst time attending too, so it was nice to share that experience with others in the same position and we had a great time getting to know each other and exploring the event itself together. We aimed to fi t in as much as we could during our time there and despite the size, between all of us I think we covered everything! The event itself was great and I am very glad I went. I found that the workshops were a good way to meet new people and learn new things through their experiences within a particular area. I especially enjoyed the workshop by UAR ‘Making the Frame Fit - How we should talk about Animal Research’. The interactive exercises they utilised got all of us talking and thinking, in fact we were still discussing it after we left. I also found the ‘Improving the welfare of mice used in the study of ageing’ very engaging and I came away from that workshop having learned a lot.Roxie (on the right) with colleague Justyna.

Bulletin62 • June 2022 Additionally, I very much enjoyed the flash trade presentations in the lecture theatre, they were both entertaining and informative. Also, I really found the first time presenters and the various posters very inspiring, especially having always been nervous undertaking anything like that myself. I am part of our Environmental Enrichment Committee at Imperial and went to Congress with a few projects in mind. I was fortunate to be able to return with various samples of new products to take back and present to the Committee. Having everything in one place made it very straightforward to be introduced to many of these items and be able to ask all the questions we had. I appreciated the opportunities for socialising that Congress offered, which I felt created a fun and welcoming environment. I especially enjoyed the Gala Dinner on the final night, of course, as well as ‘Ken’s Legendary Congress Quiz’ (which we did come away with a prize from... yes, last place does win you a prize!). I bumped into ex-colleagues and college friends from all over the country during the event as well and it was great to catch up with everyone. I would sincerely recommend attending Congress in the future if you get the opportunity.Reporter: Roxie Wood

Lee and Nat both thought they gained the most from not only attending the wide range of workshops, but also talking to people from other facilities, sharing experiences, ideas and knowledge. Sarah and Olivia believed that they gained a wider understanding of the industry as a whole and the various ways in which we can help improve welfare of laboratory animals and in turn improve scientific results. If you could bring back one thing from Congress (either knowledge or product) what would it be and why? From left to right: Olivia, Lee, Sarah and Nat.

Sarah and Olivia believed that they gained a wider understanding of the industry as a whole and the various ways in which we can help improve welfare of laboratory animals and in turn improve scientifi c results. If you could bring back one thing from Congress (either knowledge or product) what would it be and why?Lee would have loved to have brought back a sterilisation device that uses hypochlorous acid in a water vapour, which was promoted as a much cheaper and faster alternative to VHP devices and eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals on diet and porous items.Olivia wanted to bring the mist sanitisers (tabletop and free standing) because they not only sanitise hands but it is possible to pass small objects through them to make sure everything is extra clean. She said “I feel these would create a further method of preventing disease in our facility”.Nat began by saying that if she could have brought anything back from Congressthen it would have been a micropig but if she had to choose something seriously, it would be “a new IVC design, that I really liked and would love to try out. There were some great rat ones which were very versatile in terms of enrichment possibilities, with some useful features – like the ability to connect multiple cages or to change the food hopper placement”.Sarah agreed with bringing back more IVCs, mentioning that “they were more spacious and would be able to fi t different kinds of enrichment for both rats and mice. Having an enriching environment is important so that animals can express their natural behaviours. And as a technician – this is crucial to Animal Welfare”.They will all continue to put these new ideas into practise and who knows – there may even be a poster at Congress 2023!Emma OwenBranch Secretary
