President’s Corner BY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENT I hope you all are having a great Summer! But…have you included your Porsche in your Summer plans?I sometimes think I am tired of the “It's not just the cars, it's the people” …until I have a meeting like the other night with our 35 new members. We all need to renew our reasons for being a PCA member. Yes, indeed, we got started because of the cars. What got us to be active members was the people. The common interest in finely engineered cars that were fun to drive, autocross, track, concours or learn how to maintain. How did this happen? Mostly because of the people who got us involved in some Porsche activity that we could enjoy and most impor-tant, share with, like minded sports car enthusiasts .It’s not only the fun of finding new roads or towns to visit with interesting drives, it is the camara-derie of sharing the excitement of the drive, the curves and the interesting views along the route. It’s not just the excitement of the run on the track or autocross layout, it is it discussing it with other drivers and learning from others how to improve. It is not just the joy of getting a trophy for Concours, it is seeing your car at its best and learning from other contestants the ways to make it better. It is the fun of a shared love of great cars, but also the joy of having appreciative peers with whom to discuss your experiences. We are fortunate to be owners of a great brand. What a lot of us don’t realize is how much more we could enjoy our cars if we got involved in PCA. Don’t get me wrong. It’s OK to be a member and not want to track, autocross or concours, but don’t miss out on the social aspect our club. Drives don’t require anything but getting together for a fun day of socializing to a new and interesting place. Monthly Meetings don’t need anything except a night out for dinner and winning door prizes. What all the activities have in common is the interaction of Porsche owners who have a shared interest in a Porsche Automobile. All of this is to say…I hope you will get more involved. We need more members to take an active interest and get on a committee or better yet, chair a commit-tee or run for office. Contact any officer or chair and volunteer. You can do a little or a lot. Just get involved. We have over 750 members and I have only met about 100. Love to meet you all and see your car and see what direction you think the club should take and how we can get you to do it with us.I am on my way to Monterey, California for Car Week and The Werks Reunion. This will be my 7th year and I love Monterey, Car Week and Werks more every time. I’ll tell you more about this next issue. Werks is second only to Parade in PCA magnitude, and we just had many of our members return from Parade in French Lick, IN with a great appreciation of the organization.Let me hear from you on things you think the club should be doing. I really want your input on the direc-tion of our club. Hope to see you soon at an event. LH ROUNDUP 7

ZONE 5 NOTES CHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP Hope you all are having a great Summer. The Porsche Club just completed its annual Parade which for those of you that have never attended is like a business meeting, convention, party, and series of competitions all in one. Zone 5 was well represented with over 100 attendees. Our zone took home many awards. Highlights include family of the year, first runner up for region of the year, and many awards in Concours, Autocross, the Art show, etc. Congratulations to all the winners! The Porsche Club of America is doing very well. Growth has been extremely strong, we are doing very well financially, and the club has more activi-ties than ever. All the major events like Parades, Treffens, Werks Reunion, etc. are very well attended and tend to sell out very fast. If you are interested in attending a national event, talk with your region leadership about how to get signed up. National is also working very hard on providing online content, and this has become very popular. The updated national website has many links to interesting content about Porsches and comple-ments our terrific Panorama magazine. PCA also recently hired Manny Alban as the technical direc-tor, and he is working to help make PCA the source for all things technical. So, keep an eye out for this new content. I think it will be real value added to our PCA memberships. There is also a lot happening within our zone. Want to go to a large PCA affiliated event, but don’t want to travel so far? We have Boxstoberfest and PCA Palooza coming up in the second half of the year. Within our regions, there are tons of events hap-pening. Check with your local region, but you can also check the websites of other regions within the zone and see if there is an event that you might want to attend. Club Races, Driver’s educa-tion events, autocrosses, multi-day and single day tours, etc. There are more events happening than anyone would possibly have time for. Hope you get out and enjoy them.Be safe, and I’ll see you down the road.Chuk Bush Zone 510 LH ROUNDUP

MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELL Driving the lineAlthough this subject has been covered before, watching drivers, both new and experienced at our track days indicates that either the topic of driving the line is not fully understood or the importance of it for safety reasons is not clear. So, what is the line. It is best described as that imaginary track your car should follow around the course to drive the fastest, the smoothest and the safest. Some rules about the line. First, you do not drive in the middle of the track, that portion is for transi-tion from side to side to set up for the next corner. Second, you enter a corner or turn on the oppo-site side of the track from the direction of the turn. In other words, if it is a right hand turn you start your “turn in” from the far-left side of the track. At the “apex” of the turn, that point where you transi-tion from turning in to beginning to track out, you should be as close to the inside edge of the track as possible. You then accelerate and “track out” to a point near the outside edge of the track. By following this procedure you, in fact, widen the turn and thus enable you to drive through it faster, smoother, and safer. Let’s expand on safer. Again, in the right-hand turn there are forces on your car that want to push it left i.e., to the outside of the turn. If you are at the inside of the turn, as in close to the inside edge of the track, you have room to your left, still on the track, should your car start to slide. If instead you are in the middle or outside portions of the track you have less asphalt as a safety margin before you are off track. The oppo-site is true for a left hand turn i.e. you would start your turn in on the right side of the track again as far away from the direction of turn as you can be and still be on the track. At Harris Hill Raceway we help you with the line as there are cones placed around the track to identify critical points as in “turn in, apex and track out”. If you would draw a line on the track con-necting all these cones … guess what you have, the paper line for driving the fastest, the smooth-est and the safest around the track. A longtime member of Longhorn region who has since passed away, Ron Shade, who by the way raced 911’s for over forty years and was a SCCA national champion, once told me when I asked him how he drove so fast, replied he always drove the line and tried to make every lap a mirror the others. In other words, he focused on never devi-ating from the perfect line by more than a foot unless it was necessary to pass a car … and he passed lots of cars. We aren’t that good BUT we can and should focus on being as precise as we can to adhering to the perfect line around the track. Hope this provides a better understanding of the line and why we stress it. At our level it's not so much to drive faster but to drive safer, learn the capabilities of our cars and improve our driving skills. See you all at the next track day.LH ROUNDUP 11

Meet the Longhorn - Stephen & Stephanie WrightTell us a bit about yourself/family/back-ground? Stephanie and I met at the University of Texas in Austin and married shortly after we graduated. I worked on the NASA Space Station Program which took us from Houston to Huntington Beach, CA to Reston, VA, and finally back to Houston. Though those years I supported major design and planning efforts leading up to the launch of the first U.S. Space Station elements in 1998. Stephanie worked in the software industry, pri-marily in sales, as we moved around the country. I continued to support a wide range of NASA pro-grams, leading Booz Allen’s NASA business until 2018 when we moved to San Antonio. I’m still with Booz Allen, now managing the development of flight trainers for the Air Force and Air National Guard. Stephanie works in medical sales but has also supported the production of COVID-19 tests over the past year. We have two kids, Alex and Charlotte. Both graduated from the University of Texas. Alex and his wife, Maddie, recently moved to Northern California where he is an anesthesia resident. Charlotte is an emergency room nurse at St. David’s hospital in Austin pursuing her master’s degree to become a Nurse Practitioner. What year did you join PCA? We joined in 2018 after we moved to San Antonio, and I bought my 2014 Cayman S.What other regions have you belonged to? Longhorn is the 1st What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? I owned a 2007 Cayman S in Houston for a while, but the roads were too straight and flat to have much fun. What’s your favorite Porsche memory? The first time I pushed it and found out how great a Cayman performs . There is no substitute! What LHR events do you enjoy most? I enjoy all the events, but especially track days, autocrosses and drives on twisty roads. What’s your favorite Porsche? It’s a toss-up between my current one and my next one (just don’t know what it is yet). What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/participate in? We both enjoy traveling and hanging out with our kids/family. We also seem to do a lot of home remodeling, but it’s debatable how much we enjoy it. Collecting trophy from Fiesta Challenge Rally.Williams Creek Reservoir near Pagosa Springs, CO. Our get-away from COVID trip last July. Beautiful drive up to the lake. If you go, just know it’s 15 miles of dirt road and a bit rough for 4 inches of clearance. 12 LH ROUNDUP

Drive to Utopia and...On June 26, 30+ cars participated in a drive where half the group went to the Laurel Tree Restaurant in Utopia and the other half went to Luckenbach and the Apple Store Restaurant. The drive to Utopia started with a long drive up I-10 before it turned off into the familiar twisty, curvy Hill Country roads. The Laurel Tree Restaurant is owned by Laurel Waters, a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef, and serves seasonal gourmet cuisine. ...to Luckenbauch and Apple Store (not THAT Apple Store!) Article by Stephen WrightThe alternate drive on Saturday provided twists and turns and great scenery on the way to lunch at the Apple Store in Medina. Rest stops in Luckenbach (plus shopping) and Camp Verde (more shop-ping) were great locations to take a break. A minor technical glitch had Bill and Irene Dorsey (our sweeper) delayed at the start of the drive, but they were all smiles when they caught up to the group in Luckenbach. Excellent co-piloting by Stephanie Wright made sure we made the right turn onto Camp Verde Drive while Steve was admiring an ostrich on the left. If you were on the main drive to the Laurel Tree or missed both, you may want to follow this route for a weekend drive, shopping, and lunch at either the Apple Store or Camp Verde General Store.Seven Porsches (and 1 imposter) take a break at LuckenbachSelling your Porsche or Porsche parts or accessories? Porsche Parade Article & Photos by Ton SchadeggFirst Time Porsche Parade Goers ReviewI f you’ve never been, parade is a yearly week-long event comprised of four competitive events (Concours, TSD Rally, Autocross and Technical Quiz—trophies are awarded for all) along with a variety of activities ranging from Banquets, Tours (driving, bus, cruise and self-guided), Tech Academy, Golf Tournament, 5K Run/Walk, Art Show, Drive and Compare, Wine and Beer Tastings, Parade Kid activities as well as endless resort activities. While many members choose to participate for the entire week, you can be involved as much as your travel plans allow. Specifics, including detailed info on every event, can be found on the PCA Parade Website: https://www.porscheparade.org. Here is the link to this year’s Photobook https://porscheparade.zenfolio.com/f107654815 -- you’ll see miles of smiling faces! When you dig into the details it can become daunting figuring out what to do each day, but the website is a huge help with descriptions and schedules. Below is a snapshot of this year’s Tuesday/Wednesday Daily Schedule. These events are unique to the day and in addition to activities that were happening everyday like Parade Store/Sponsors, Art Show, Concours prep, Parade kids activities, and numerous French Lick Resort Activities (Stables, Bourbon tasting, High Tea, Golf, etc.). Building “your” schedule is part of the fun, there is something for everyone. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention volunteering; another great way to meet people and enjoy the end of week volunteer party. Our Buffalo Trace volunteer tour guides were from the Bluegrass region and helped us bootleg a couple extra bottles of Blantons Bourbon from the Buffalo Trace Gift Store. After the tour ended they took those interested on a tour of the Kentucky Horse Farm Region on the way back. One of the many new friends we now have from Parade. That brings me to our biggest surprise and take-away – the feeling of really being a part of a larger “community” with an intense shared passion of life. Sit down at the bar, banquet, tour lunch, or even the gas station and simply ask “good drive today” or “where is Risentoter Region” and before you know it, you’re talking about kids and life and on your way to making lifelong friends.Oh yeah, with about 1000 Porsches registered, Concours, Historic Displays, Autocross, PCNA on-site, epic driving tours, etc. there’s plenty of car stuff too! The week ends with all the cars assem-bled and about an hour tour through the local towns. This year we had about 500 cars and a police escort, so the group stayed together – what a sight! But it’s the people that will make it memo-rable and bring you back. Just like the Longhorns, get involved and meet some awesome people. We’ll see you at the Poconos next year! Porsche Parade in Pictures The 2021 Porsche Parade was held July 11-17 in French Lick, Indiana with almost 1000 cars in atten-dance. The Longhorn Region was represented by 15 members. Parade rooms and events were spread over 2 hotels –the French Lick Springs and West Baden. To make attending events easier, there was a trolley that ran 24/7 between the two hotels.Events included banquets, a concours, driving tours, dinner trains, TSD and gimmick rallies, an art show, autocross, sim racing, RC car competition, a golf tour-nament, a 5K walk/run, and parade of Porsches. There was also a hospitality suite with vendor setups, tech sessions, tech quiz, and historical displays. In other words, there was something for everyone. And organizers didn’t forget about the kids - there were lots of activities for the kids! They had their own mini-car concours, bingo, crafts, art competition, any-cross (a kids version of autocross), foot golf tourna-ment, and RC car competition. Also, kids entered a contest where they drew pictures representing Parade 2022 being held in the Poconos. The first-place winner will have their picture reproduced on the kids’ offi-cial t-shirt and the second place winner will have their picture on a tote bag for next year’s Parade Kids.Everyone had a great time! Start planning to attend next year’s 2022 parade at Kalahari Resort, Poconos, Pennsylvania. And make note - it’s being held earlier next year - from June 12-18th. Breakfast in Bandera Article by Mike VriesengaUsually, you have to wake up early to beat the July heat in Texas. That’s why Michael Sorbera planned a morning drive to Bandera followed by a brief foray into the Hill Country. About 20 Porsches arrived at the Helotes CVS under cover of darkness. It was a pleasure to meet new members like Louis and Darla in their black over black 996, and Fred and Lisa in their Boxster. The sun was rising while a brief ride up Highway 16 brought us to Bandera, Cowboy Capital of the World and home of the Old Spanish Trail (OST) Restaurant.OST is a Bandera institution, a family restaurant since 1921. Under the watchful eyes of the locals, the staff corralled us in the John Wayne Room, so named for the movie memorabilia and Duke photographs and posters that dominate the room. I didn’t have enough courage to ask the waitress why they didn’t have a Blazing Saddles poster. Like Porsche 356 and 924 owners, different people have different ideas about what makes a classic. Fully fed and caffeinated, we lined up in front of the Bandera County Courthouse while the craft market vendors set up. Soon we crossed the Medina River onto Highway 470 and drove into Real County.Usually, you have to wake up early to beat the heat, but 2021 has been markedly cool and wet in this part of Texas. With tops down or windows open, it was a blessing to see the countryside green and lush this time of year. The views of typically Texas named mountains, like Saddleback and Gunsight, green grass in Brushy Hollow, mixed with the pleasure of seeing a variety of Porsches from a 968 to the latest 911 made for a good drive. After a brief stop to stretch our legs at the Lost Maples General Store, we headed east on 337, one of the three Twisted Sisters, towards Medina. With the higher elevation and change in light, the views continued to delight. I was struck by the translucent light on the maple leaves along Duncan Creek. Utterly charming! Fortunatley, we were stuck behind a slow-moving SUV just as we passed the constable. No need for excuses when you’re below the speed limit.Medina was crowded with Mustangs and Corvettes parked along the north side of Hwy 16 while the Porsches parked on the south side. The encounter was at least as civil as an encounter between the Jets and the Sharks, but with a different soundtrack. Words were exchanged. One convertible Mustang driver explained he had been a Porsche mechanic for 12 years. When Jim Conrad asked him, “Why are you driving a Ford,” he replied, “Because I was a Porsche mechanic for 12 years.” Ouch. Some words cut like a knife. Fortunately, apple ice cream and pie from The Apple Store (not that Apple) are great solaces. Thanks to Michael and Sherry Sorbera for setting up a short, pleasant drive on an unexpectedly cool July morning. 24 LH ROUNDUP
