The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. I say light at the end of the tunnel, because when I was putting the diary dates together (see page 27), I realised that as well as the online meetings and courses we have become accustomed to, there are also signs of a return to face to face conferences – both in the form of AALAS and Congress, next year. I do hope that restrictions are lifted enough by the autumn to allow travel to the USA, especially as I have friends and colleagues in Kansas City, where AALAS is being held. Of course, it will be great to meet up in person in this country at our very own Congress (see pages 18, 19, 20 and 23) and I hope everyone has already started to consider what work they might like to submit – I know I have! The current travel restrictions have meant that I have just taken a break and travelled a little in the UK, fi rst to Nottinghamshire, then onto Somerset and have had the good fortune to have had a couple of experiences with raptors, both fl ying a variety of owls, hawks and falcons and discussing their conservation and rescue. I also got to meet a golden, plus sea and bald eagles, so I was very interested to read about the talk given in Scotland about the golden eagle conservation on pages 21-23.Even if you do not get to walk with a hawk, as I did (see the front cover), I do hope that everyone fi nds the time to get some rest and relaxation this summer. One of the few positives that have come out of the pandemic, is the reminder of what a rich holiday destination this country is.Your trustedglobal partnerin life-savingresearch.For more information on our MAX High DensityRodent Housing go to www.AllentownInc.com/MAXMAXHigh DensityRodent HousingTMWWW.ALLENTOWNINC.COM® Allentown, LLC © 2019. Bulletin22 • July 2021 Philip’s talk included some fabulous pictures of these very elegant raptors and provided us with some interesting facts and figures about the Golden Eagle. Its eyesight is 8 times sharper than a human’s. Its grip is fierce, 10 times stronger than a human and in flight they can reach speeds of over 120mph. They build their eyrie on craggy hillside and will lay 2 eggs in it. At 8 weeks old the eagle is fully grown but will not reach maturity until 3-5 years. Before the project began, there was only between two and four pairs of Golden Eagles across Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders, however a supporting study by Scottish Natural Heritage shows that the local habitat is suitable for up to 16 pairs. For the next four years, the project will bring between three and ten young eagles south.Golden Eagles are very shy birds and will stay away from humans. They consume a wide variety of prey including carrion. Part of the project is to educate farmers and landowners about the eagle and its minimal impact on their livestock. Philip told us of the many challenges these birds can face (Photo: John Wright)IAT BULLETIN JULY21.indd 22 02/07/2021 11:10

BulletinJuly 2021 • 23including wind farms, climate change and prey availability, to name but a few. For the translocation programme they collect up to 10 birds a year. They will take 1 bird from an eyrie leaving 1 bird in the nest. The birds are then kept for 6 weeks in an aviary where they are fi tted with their satellite tracking device which can last over 20 years.Gidona then spoke to us about the checks the vets perform to ensure that the birds are fi t and healthy. They include taking blood and faecal samples and clinical examinations of the bird’s wellbeing. She told us about the food they give to the eagles – they do not feed them pigeons or domestic poultry. They are given rabbits and road kill, among other foods to ensure they are receiving a diet comparable to what they would receive from their parents in the eyrie. They then carry out a pre-release assessment and once they confi rm all is all fi ne the birds are released into the wild.Overall an excellent presentation on a fascinating and very worthwhile project.
