THE MESSENGER GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER VOLUME 110 ISSUE 7 JULY 2020 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK PREPARING FOR THE LONG HAUL Each day I have been watching the headlines One record breaking day after the next as the number of covid 19 cases in Florida rises alarmingly fast The curve which was slowly but surely flattening has now grown so steep that if it were a road I wouldn t attempt to drive on it Sadly no it is not just a result of more testing The rate of positive tests has gone up significantly as well Despite months of efforts it appears we are back at the starting line in trying to fight this pandemic or maybe we have regressed we are not even at the starting line anymore It is disheartening We should have been able to contain this thing and stop the spread but we can t seem pull it together as a community We can t seem to truly care for and protect our neighbors as ourselves The fight of the parallel pandemic racism seems to be about at the same point As nooses and burning crosses appear across the country as more and more unarmed black men women and children are killed as neo nazis and white supremacists hold rallies and take to social media we wonder if we ve made any progress at all It is disheartening Shouldn t we have been able to exorcize the racism from our midst by now I am reminded of the story of the Israelites leaving Egypt thinking they had only a short journey ahead of them I imagine they thought that crossing the Sinai desert and making their way to the promised land would take at most a few weeks Instead at least as the story reads they get lost and wander about in the wilderness for years Worse yet they kept getting lost losing sight of God ignoring those trying to guide them As I watch weary impatient people in our own community quit following the covid 19 guidelines so easily and so quickly I understand a little more how and why this happened for the Israelites More and more I realize that we are horribly lost and getting more lost by the day in the wilderness of this pandemic and our own racism While I still hold out hope that we will reach a post covid 19 world and that someday we will completely deconstruct systemic racism it appears at the moment that we have a long haul ahead of us in the wilderness So I m focusing on learning to find the contentment and simple joys in this wilderness lifestyle I m learning to get my bearings by centering on my true north the Great Shepherd of us all I m trying to make the most of what is before me and around me the resources I do have the community I do have the God who has never abandoned me Manna is not the same as warm puffy bread zoom is not the same as in person gatherings and worship but I m trying my hardest to acquire a taste for it It can nourish and sustain me Like the Israelites I sense myself growing and maturing through this time For most of us who we become when we are stressed and anxious in the wilderness is our shadow side All of us right now are having to wrestle not only with this other side of ourselves but also the other sides of our neighbors loved ones co workers fellow citizens and fellow church members Shadow sides aren t always pretty Maybe you ve found you barely recognize yourself right now and have no idea what to do with this stress version of yourself Maybe in your relationships it feels like you are getting to know a whole new person when you see someone in stress instead of their usual stability Jesus too spent time wrestling with his shadow side in the wilderness It 1 prepared him for his remarkable worldchanging ministry Maybe our time in the wilderness can and will mature us as well I ll be digging back into the enneagram the ancient personality tool these next few weeks to understand myself and others better and do some shadow work around where I go who I become in stress as well as how I can work to be healthier even at my most stressful times I wonder if you would like to join me My favorite books on the subject are accessible reads The Road Back to You and The Path Between Us by Suzanne Stabile The enneagram institute also has a fabulous resource website www enneagraminstitute com I ll be hosting a pop up event in August on the enneagram and work or reading with any of these resources will prepare you Peace Pastor Jen

2020 BACK2SCHOOL DISTRIBUTION The Fellowship and Outreach Team has hosted a Back2School Festival at Good Sam for the past three years Because of the pandemic our on site festival will not happen this year but we are planning for a simple drive through distribution of supplies that will happen sometime early August The plan is to advertise through the food pantry by providing fliers for the volunteers to place in the food bags of each client Then on a Saturday in August we will set up in the church parking lot and distribute bags of school supplies to parents and children who drive through Children are required to be with their parents in order to receive supplies We will practice social distancing and safety precautions per Dr Beryl s suggestions so that our volunteers can stay safe Right now our budget is 500 and that is much lower than what we have spent in previous years but this year we have not gotten a grant to help with costs Not having the on site festival will reduce our expenses so our total budget will go for school supplies this year We are asking members and friends of our congregation consider donating to the Back2School supply fund We will be purchasing the supplies in bulk to get them at the best prices available You may contribute through the church website and specify that your gift is for the Back2School Supply Fund or you can send a check made out to Good Sam at the church address on the last page of this newsletter Please designate the funds for Back2School on the check We appreciate any size gift and need those donations to come in to the church no later than Friday July 24 Please contact Eric Johnson Fellowship and Outreach Team Moderator if you have any questions He is listed in the church directory Thank you in advance for any assistance we are able to provide in funding this worthy cause We hope to distribute school supplies to 100 children in our community outside our walls 3

2020 HURRICANE SEASON PREDICTED TO BE ACTIVE The 2020 hurricane season is upon us The season lasts between June 1 and November 30 In early May we witnessed Tropical Storm Arthur tropical storms can happen anytime during the year Early forecasts are calling for an active storm season A recent forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA agrees with the earlier forecasts Any landfalling storms could create unprecedented challenges for government officials working to respond to the coronavirus pandemic which scientists expect to continue albeit possibly at a slower rate throughout the summer The Pinellas County Emergency Management Department pinellascounty org emergency management is a comprehensive source for hurricane preparation information Each year they publish a hurricane preparedness guide Because of the pandemic the new guide will be on their website Since Good Samaritan is not presently having in person services you will need to familiarize yourself with the emergency management website People living in evacuation zones need to make plans on where they will go if a hurricane threatens our area A new wrinkle in this decision making process is the COVID 19 pandemic There is a very real possibility that shelters will have very limited capacity due to social distancing requirements Building an emergency preparedness kit may be more difficult this year due to lack of availability of cleaning and disinfecting supplies Other items may 12 also be in short supply Refer to the list of recommended supplies in the online guide We highly recommend that you have your kit ready early in the season You may wish to sign up for alerts by phone email or text www pinellascounty org alertpinellas Also you may receive emergency weather alerts on the NOAA Weather Alert Radio Social media is also a good source of information You can receive county news and updates from Pinellas County Government s Facebook and Twitter accounts www facebook com pinellasnews Twitter for Pinellas County Government PinellasEM Twitter updates on traffic pinellastraffic A private source of social media information can be found on Nextdoor www nextdoor com Television Pinellas County Connection Television PCCTV can be viewed on Spectrum 637 WOW 18 or Frontier 44 Submitted by Clarence Wilkinson

FAST STILL GOING STRONG GIVING OUT HUGS On June 18th our network members attended a virtual meeting to share how each of us are doing during these troubling times and to hear an update on where FAST is in relation to the issues chosen at last year s Rally There is concern that the County Administrator wants to include families who make 80 000 a year eligible for affordable housing FAST will speak with each County Commissioner about our concerns and if they don t take action there will be a virtual meeting with all of our network members and the Administrator to attempt to persuade him to change eligibility to those families making 53 000 or less The uncertainty of schools opening and protective policies that will be in place puts our request for Restorative Justice Conferencing on hold However it is apparent during these trying times that restorative practices are imperative to dealing with student issues The County Commission has received a report from the consultant on mental health services that recommends a Central Receiving System to direct each client to the services they need FAST continues to meet with leaders in the mental health field to urge expediting this solution Lastly the issue of Racial Profiling by the Police has been addressed Both Clearwater Chief Slaughter and St Petersburg Chief Holloway have agreed by letter to address written complaints FAST has a Law Enforcement Interaction Card form to report interactions both positive and negative You can go to their website fast pinellas org to download and print these forms Submitted by Bev Kelly How do we stand FAST TOGETHER Recently one of our church members said I want to hug I need to hug We may not be able to physically be able to hug but Good Sam is giving out hugs of food three days a week Through the Pack A Snack program we have given 968 bags to Head Start students or children ages 1 11 whose families come to the food pantry for assistance Our recent grant of 5 000 from the Pinellas Community Foundation continues to provide much needed food assistance to those 55 in our neighboring communities of Pinellas County Today is Tuesday June 23rd and in the eleven days we were open in June we have given 125 bags with 20 worth of food to people who can cook We have also given 10 bags to people who can t cook They are not all homeless One 87 year old gentleman rides his electric wheelchair over from Seminole to get food He exclaims proudly I can cook in the microwave So he is a perfect candidate for the non cook bags Our senior clients are thankful deserving and people who just need a little hug Submitted by Judy Friend If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday Isaiah 58 10 REACH OUT During this time of social distancing we are all experiencing aloneness in a way most of us have not before Some live alone and are affected even more by being isolated and some who are not tech saavy feel it even more Let s all take time to reach out to those we think might need a call an email or a handwritten card Doing that will help us all feel more connected and who knows you may end up being more uplifted by unselfishly reaching out to others Let s stand together even when we cannot stand side by side GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH CONTINUES TO PARTNER WITH THE HEART GALLERY SIGN VANDALISM It appears a broken flower pot was thrown at our church sign sometime overnight on June 22 and it cracked both the top layer of clear plexiglass as well as the white layer behind it that holds the letters Pastor Jen went to the church looked at the damage and called the police to file a report Clarence Wilkinson will be working with the sign company to get it repaired soon 14

500 FAMILIES FED OUT OF GOOD SAM PARKING LOT run by Oakdale United Methodist church that same Saturday morning we said yes We simply couldn t turn away the opportunity to help 500 families I showed up at 9 am to greet Eliseo Soon many volunteers from his organizations and many members of his large extended Puetro Rican family showed up Saturday morning followed shortly by a moving truck filled to the brim with food Pallet after pallet of food was unloaded into our parking lot Ramen Noodles cans of spaghetti sauce crates of milk flats of juice boxes full of chicken and veggies Though we had less than 24 hours to spread the word via social media and word of mouth cars were lined up around the block before the food even arrived By about 4 30 pm all of the food had been distributed As Eliseo put it It makes people feel less anxious when their refrigerators are full and their cupboards stocked I m glad that Good Sam could be part of such an endeavor Several Good Sam volunteers who had helped bring food over from the United Methodist food drive stuck around to help out and stash some of the less perishable food to be given out at our own food pantry We hope to partner with Puerto Rico Connect and LALUC again Submitted by Pastor Jen PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC JOHNSON Friday evening at about 4pm I received a phone call from our family friend Eliseo Santana Jr He works with Puerto Rico Connect and LALUC League of United Latin American Citizens He told me that he had just received word from a distributer with whom he works and they had a donation of food enough for 500 families Much of it was fresh food milk veggies chicken The only catch They needed to deliver it and have someone distribute it to families in need the very next day Eliseo asked if Good Samaritan would be willing to let them distribute out of our church parking lot Despite having truck loads of food coming in ourselves from the food drive 15
