2Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar were developed while we were working as ordinary teachers in a primary school and all the ideas for the programme came out of our work in the classroom. The multi-sensory activities were designed to keep the children active and engaged with the teaching, which led to the children learning more quickly and effectively. All aspects of the teaching were trialled before being published and we have now been involved with many research projects over the years where the effectiveness of the programme has been verified. As all teachers know, just telling a child something once does not mean they understand or will remember it. Therefore revision is built into the programme to help all children learn as well as possible. We hope you enjoy the new and refreshed look of the materials, as well as achieving great results. Our programme is used in over 150 countries worldwide, empowering thousands of teachers who transform children’s literacy ability. The programme enables teachers to get their children reading and writing from an early age. As the leading synthetic phonics publisher, and the most experienced, we provide a 7-year programme that takes children beyond phonics and integrates spelling, punctuation and grammar too!Why the programme is trusted• Systematic and progressive approach toteaching children essential literacy skills• Embeds phonics, spelling, punctuation andgrammar from Reception/P1 to Year 6/P7• Enables children to meet and exceed theexpectations of the Phonics ScreeningCheck and National Curriculum• Teaching is multi-sensory and active withfun actions, stories and songs• Training options to suit your school needs, including online courses, apps, scheduledcourses and whole school training days• Resources provide detailed insights on the teachingapproach to help and guide teachers• Flexible, fun and easy to implement in school

3Emma Ince, Deputy Headteacher at Tudor Primary School: “We used a phonics programme for over 18 years, yet our results were still below average. It was clear that we needed to make changes. We implemented Jolly Phonics and taught the programme with fidelity and at a pace. This has truly transformed our Phonics Screening Check results to above 90%, where previously they were 24%.”Lisa Humpheryes, Senior Deputy Headteacher at Rush Green Primary School: “If I had to summarise our incredibly successful transformation in one line it would be to say that Jolly Phonics is a totally kinaesthetic and engaging approach to teaching reading and writing. Ensuring that there is a consistent teaching approach in the school has meant that we have become the highest achieving school in Barking and Dagenham and beyond.”2nd year of school 3rd year of school 4th year of school 5th year of school 6th year of school 7th year of school1st year of schoolChildren continue to refine and extend their earlier phonics knowledge with each year providing:- 36 spelling lessons (1 per week) - 36 grammar or punctuation lessons (1 per week)Daily Phonics LessonsChoose from photocopiable handbooks or pupil and teacher’s books to deliver the programme.Use decodable readers to match the skills that children are taught.

Page 4

4The programme continues through the school years, by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in previous years. This enables children to spell and punctuate more accurately, use a wider vocabulary and have a clear understanding of how language works.Children are taught the 42 letter sounds, how to write them, how to blend the sounds for reading and how to identify the sounds in words for spelling and writing. Alongside this children learn about tricky words as well as being introduced to the alternative spellings of vowels.Children are introduced to parts of speech to include nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Colours and actions are used to help children identify parts of speech in sentences.

Page 5

5Children are initially taught one way of spelling a sound before gradually learning that the same sound can be represented in a number of different forms. They start with the common variations, before progressing to other, more unusual spelling patterns that occur as the children develop their vocabulary for reading and writing.Children are introduced to punctuation concepts and continue to revise these throughout the school years. Starting with full stops and speech marks, children will then learn how to use exclamation and question marks, colons and semi-colons, hyphens, commas, bullet points and much more. fi nd out more about this programmesee pages 38-39
