Bobcat Wrestling2022-23Welcome to John Glenn High School and the 2022-2023 wrestling season! Your Wrestling Bobcats come into the season ranked #6 by Michigan Grappler in the MHSAA Division 2.For the second year in a row, the program has two varsity schedules to accommodate the number of wrestlers on the team. We have 7 of 14 individuals ranked in their respective weight classes. We come into the season with a group of kids who have spent their off season working hard to get better. Our schedules are challenging, but our coaching staff feels this team is prepared to put John Glenn on the map!We are blessed with a huge support system, and we are extremely grateful. Our season is long and at times grueling so thank you to our families for supporting our wrestlers on and off the mat. Thank you to our team sponsors for their generous contributions to our program. Thank you to the Administration for your continued support of our student athletes and our program. It makes our job easier as a staff when you have an administration that supports your vision and actively helps you reach those goals! Lastly, thank you to our PAWS team, our “Parents-About-Wrestling-Support” is our “special forces” group that does all the work behind the scenes! We would not be able to do the things we do without you!Our team goals are this: to have fun, get better every day and compete. We want to build upon our team state tournament run from last year and continue to compete for team district and regional championships. We will represent John Glenn High School, our District, our alumni, our families and our community in a way that makes you proud! Again, thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you mat side! GO BOBCATS!Matt Bishop, Head CoachJohn Glenn Wrestling3

Bobcat Wrestling2022-23As a former Glenn graduate and Bay County Roadrunner, Coach Bishop is very excited to be back in his hometown as the Head Coach of the John Glenn Varsity Wrestling Team. He returns to his Alma Mater with close to 40 years of experience in the sport. After an outstanding high school career, he took his talents to the Big Ten and competed for Michigan State University. He finished his wrestling and college career at Grand Valley State University where he earned his college degree as well as won a National Title. After wrapping up his competitive career at GVSU, Bishop stepped right into the coaching arena. As an assistant coach, he has been on the staff of four different programs that competed for team state titles, two of which won multiple state titles. He has been the head coach for two other high schools and has been a staff member on two national teams. As the head coach, Coach Bishop is establishing a culture within the wrestling program that breeds athletic and academic success. HEAD COACH MATT BISHOPAs a recent John Glenn alumni, I began my coaching career this year as one of the middle school coaches. During my time at Glenn, I was a state qualifier my junior year, team captain all four years and helped my team win county championships and district championships. I’m proud to be a part of the coaching staff and am excited for our program.ASSISTANT COACH WYATT BOSSBACHASSISTANT COACH COLLIN WEBERWrestled at Defiance College5 years of coaching with Bay County Roadrunners 3 years coaching at CMMS 5 years with John Glenn 6

Bobcat Wrestling2022-23ASSISTANT COACH CHAD BRIGGSCoach Briggs comes to JGHS with a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience. Over the past 17 years, he has coached on several varsity staff as an assistant and Head Coach of a program. Notably, during his 5 years as head coach at Corunna HS, he earned quite a bit of success coaching 22 all-state wrestlers, five of whom were finalists and three state champs! Even though his coaching resume is littered with success in the wins and losses column, his greatest honor is teaching young men and women the skills to succeed in life and honoring the trust given by parents to be a positive influence and mentor to their student-athletes. ASSISTANT COACH JOE FORETCoach Foret comes to JGHS with a ton of experience to be our heavyweight coach. In high school, Joe wrestled across town at Garber High School from 2011-2014. During high school, he was a 4x state qualifier, finding the podium twice for a 7th and a 4th place finish. He went on to wrestle heavyweight at the University of Wisconsin – Parkside from 2014-2018. Since graduating, Joe has coached at St. Joseph Catholic Central and at his Alma Mater, Garber. We are very excited and fortunate to have Joe on our staff.ASSISTANT COACH CHAD CNUDDE4-year high school varsity wrestler2-time CaptainTeam qualified 3 of 4 years ending with a runner-up finish my senior year15 years coaching wrestling 7th year assisting at John GlennMy goal is to help create a positive culture in and out of our wrestling room.7

Bobcat Wrestling2022-23I started wrestling when I was 7 years old for the Bay County Roadrunners. I attended and graduated from Bay City Central High school in 2019. During my time at Central, I amassed over 140 career wins with more than 100 of those coming by way of pin. My senior year, I placed 7th at the individual state tournament.ASSISTANT COACH MASON SCHUMACHERI developed my passion for wrestling at New Lothrop High School where I was able to be a part of a dedicated and successful program. As a coach, I place a big focus on helping wrestlers become the hardest workers in the gym and gaining a strong mentality. Outside of wrestling, I enjoy being outdoors and traveling northern Michigan.ASSISTANT COACH DAVID ROBERTSONASSISTANT COACH AUSTIN HALEI graduated from Bay City Western in 2018 and was a 3x State Qualifier. During my high school career I amassed 167 career wins. I grew up wrestling in Bay County for the Roadrunners and OTA. I’ve been a land surveyor for three years at Rosenbrock Land Surveying. I live in Kawkawlin and enjoy riding quads, dirt bikes, and snowmobiles. I enjoy learning and practicing random things such as riding a unicycle and juggling or attempting a 2nd language.ASSISTANT COACH JIM FORGASHLooking forward to the opportunity to work with coach Bishop again. Back in 2008, coach Bishop brought me in as an assistant for his first head coaching job at Lakeland High School. It was a learning experience that brought me back into the sport I love, and the passion I have for working with kids. I will bring several years of assistant coaching experience, and an enthusiastic attitude to learning the wrestling philosophy coach Bishop has developed since our time together at Lakeland. Wrestling experience: Ferris State University, three-time all-state with a state championship in 1987. I am excited about building an elite program at our alma mater, John Glenn High School.8

Bobcat Wrestling2022-232021-22After earning a district championship in 2021, the first since 2009, the 2021-22 season came with an injection of expectations and energy. For the first time in the history of Bay City John Glenn Wrestling, there were two varsity teams. John Glenn Blue and John Glenn White. John Glenn Blue finished with a season record of 26-8, while White finished with an 11-8 season record. We hosted the Bay County Championships and earned the fifth Bay County Team Championship in program history. In doing so, set a tournament record of 12 individual champions. Over the holiday break, both our Blue and White teams competed in events. The White team traveled to Standish-Sterling and wrestled extremely competitively. The follow-ing day, the Blue team went to Freeland Holiday Invitational and earned a team championship. As we rang in the new year, our Blue team traveled to two of the most difficult tournaments in Michigan. The Detroit Catholic Central Invitational and the Gary Rivers Memorial in Lowell. 6 wrestlers placed top-6 at the prestigious DCC Invitational. At Lowell, we wrestled 4 state-ranked teams. We earned championships in both dual tournaments that we hosted. The 2021-22 team finished with an 18-1 record at home. We hosted team districts, and earned a second consecutive district championship, defeating Bay City Western in the district final. Following up a team district championship, the 2021-22 team advanced a program record, 13 wrestlers to the individual regional tourna-ment. We had eight district finalists, including 5 individual district champions! In the team regional championship, we defeat-ed Clio in the semi-finals, 54-23. In the regional championship, we wrestled third-ranked Gaylord. In a dual that came down to the final match, we came up a little bit short. Falling to eventual state-semifinalists Gaylord, 34-29. In the individual regional tournament, we earned six state qualifiers. Four wrestlers earned bids into the regional final. Two of which earned regional championships, senior Joey Maier at 215 lbs and freshman, Connor Greer at 112 lbs. The individual state tournament, hosted at Ford Field yielded three state medalists. Sophomore Garett Forgash earned a 7th place finish at 171 lbs, senior Joey Maier finished 5th at 215 lbs, and Connor Greer earned a state runner-up finish at 112 lbs. 10

Bobcat Wrestling2022-232022-23The Bobcats come into the 2022-23 season with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and a target on their back. After falling short in a highly contested regional final a year ago, the Bobcats have a 2022-23 pre-season ranking of #6 in Division 2. The young team looks to expand on last year’s successes and continue to make strides to compete for a team state berth and team state title. Each year the program seems to grow. This year is no different; the roster has expanded to over 40 wres-tlers, and they’ve also added 5 new coaches to the staff. The tradition of having two varsity teams will continue, as well as, rounding out a robust JV roster. This year’s Varsity Blue & Varsity White’s sched-ule is loaded with fantastic competition, if the season plays out like the coaches think it should, the team will be primed and ready to compete come February when the postseason arrives. On January 14th, the Bobcats will host one of their TVC rivals, the #6 ranked Division 3 Freeland High School, in what will be a very good test for the Varsity Blue team. We hope to see you all in the gym rooting on this fantastic team!On Monday, December 5th, the Varsity Wrestling Team hosted their annual Media Day sponsored by Greg Buzzard of That Guys BBQ. Isaiah Thomas, host of the Coach T podcast, was the broadcaster for the Facebook Live event. The district’s new athletic director, Rodney Woods, was on-site for an interview to discuss the culture of “We” that is taking over John Glenn High School Athletics, and the buzz surrounding the wrestling team. Captains Lane Huizar, Garett Forgash and Aidan Lupisella shared their excitement for the season, expectations of being the best on and off the mat, and what they believe they can achieve in the postseason. Coach Bishop talked about this year’s team having two varsity line-ups and a JV squad of 40+ wrestlers; the ability to compete against tough teams; and the leadership that is making each wrestler accountable to one another. The 2022 Media Day was certainly successful in showcasing the program, and we hope to see you mat side cheering on our Glenn Wrestlers.11

Bobcat Wrestling2022-23orOur annual Steak Hot Dog Game is a very anticipated event every Fall prior to the first day of practice. The upperclassmen and coaches take on the underclassmen in a very intense game of handball in hopes of being victorious and eating steak. Our families gather together to watch the game then head into the cafeteria for a wonderful evening of fellowship and food. It was quite a potluck this year with over 40 wrestlers plus their families coming together. It’s a great way to get to know our new families, reconnect, and kick off the season. For the first time since it began, the underclassmen ate steak! 17
