Thanks to the incredible generosity of ourcommunity, we collected 1,114 pounds of non-perishable food—helping to restock our Food Pantryand support local families in need. A heartfelt thank-you to everyone whodonated and helped make this event asuccess. Your compassion and kindnesscontinue to make a meaningful difference inthe lives of those we serve.A Community Effort with Lasting Impact.Donations poured in from friends and familyacross the country, inspired by his cause.Nathan’s shopping trips were just as impactful—he caught the attention of fellow shoppers,moving them to donate on the spot. For Donating 1,000+ Boxesof Cereal in Support ofJFSA’s Mission.This summer, JFSA’s Behavioral Services is hosting an 8-week in-person Youth SupportGroup designed to help young people ages 10–17 build confidence, strengthen mental wellness,and connect with peers in a safe, supportiveenvironment. Running from June 11 to August 6,the program is focused on developingresilience, healthy coping strategies, andeffective communication skills, whileencouraging meaningful relationships andemotional growth. Each week, participantsengage in guided discussions and activities thatpromoted self-esteem, mood regulation, andanxiety reduction all within an affirming andinclusive space. Sessions take place everyWednesday, with groups for ages 15–17 from 10AM–12 PM and ages 10–14 from 2 PM–4 PM.SPOTLIGHT: YOUTH SUPPORT GROUPThis summer, 13 year-oldNathan Yachbes took on a heartfelt mission for his Bar Mitzvah: collectingboxes of cereal to support families in needthrough JFSA. May marked Mental Health Awareness month, and this year,JFSA’s Behavioral Services department focused onhighlighting the often-overlooked mental health impacts ofdomestic abuse—reminding our community that supporttruly saves lives.Nevada ranked as the second-highest state in the nation fordomestic violence, a sobering statistic that reinforced theurgent need for increased awareness, education, andaccessible support services. Throughout the month, JFSAamplified the link between domestic abuse and mentalhealth, reaffirming our commitment to providing holistic,trauma-informed care that helps survivors heal and rebuildtheir lives.Through our May Mental Health Campaign, JFSA raised—andcontinues to raise—essential funds to provide confidential,culturally sensitive support for those in crisis. She later became Program Manager,transitioned to JFSA in 2017, and stepped into her current leadership role in 2020.Outside of work, Melissa recharges in the natural beauty of Oregon’s North Coast. Enjoys hiking,camping, roller skating, rockhounding, and the occasional thrill ride on a rollercoaster. Open Arms continued to support themthrough the legal process and finalization, ensuring they felt confident every step of the way.One of their most meaningful milestones? Joseph’s baptism, surrounded by friends and family whofinally got to meet the child they had all prayed for. “We actually had a son,” they said, reflecting onthat day. “It was real—and it was perfect.”To families considering adoption, their advice is simple: Be open. Be patient. And trust the process—it’s worth every moment.Just days after that realization, they received a call from the Open Arms Adoption Agency,following up on a previous inquiry. That moment marked a turning point—and they knew it wasn’ta coincidence. It was the beginning of a new path to parenthood.From Waiting to Welcoming: After 14 years of infertility struggles—including multiplerounds of IUI, IVF, and failed embryo adoptions— Jeremy& Amanda Belarmino reached a point of emotional andphysical exhaustion. They realized that growing theirfamily would require a leap of faith… and a miracle.Illuminating Excellence:The Program Spotlight SeriesOpen Arms Adoption Agency, a program of JFSA is a non-sectarian,non-profit child placing agency licensed by the State of Nevada.Working with Open Arms, they navigated the home study and training process withdetermination. The journey wasn’t easy—especially writing their autobiographies and preparingfor inspections—but their caseworker from Open Arms, Ann Coleman from open Arms made allthe difference. Her compassion, encouragement, and belief in them gave them the confidencethey needed.The goal of the Agency’s adoption program is to provideprofessional adoption services; work with birth parents who areconsidering adoption of their children, and assist in the placementof infants in permanent family homes. To achieve this goal, therewill be referrals for counseling for birth parents (if needed), homestudy screening, post-placement supervision of infants, andworking with referral sources and attorneys both in Nevada andout of state. Facing limited jobopportunities and they struggled to find stability. Withsupport from Help of Southern Nevada, they moved totemporary shelter before being referred to JFSA’s SecondStep Program in April 2024. By August, they securedhousing with a 12-month lease, and in October On this spotlight, we celebrate the incredible achievements of our Second Step programgraduates—individuals who have overcome profound life challenges with strength, resilience,and support from JFSA. These stories of transformation are why the Second Step Programexists. Through rapid re-housing, intensive case management, and life-skills training, the programoffers a compassionate, judgment-free path from homelessness to long-term stability.In 2024 alone, 89 individuals transitioned from unsheltered living to permanent housing throughSecond Step program. JFSA Newsletter17Mr.Labarre with his Case Manager TalanaHazel with her Case Manager Vicki AllenA Second Chance for a Veteran: Mr. Labarre’s StoryIn June 2024, Mr. Labarre, a U.S. veteran, found himself at abreaking point—cycling through shelters, sleeping at hisworkplace, and trying to survive after losing his belongingsand his job. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep goinglike this,” he told the Second Step team.Second Step Program: Bridging Homelessness to HomeJFSA Emergency Services DepartmentIlluminating Excellence:The Program Spotlight SeriesRecognizing the urgency of his situation, Second Step program stepped in with financial aid,emotional support, and a plan forward. With their help, Mr. Labarre was accepted into theHUD-VASH program, which offers long-term housing support for veterans. By October, he hada permanent home of his own—with Second Step covering deposits, furniture, food, andessentials to help him settle in. “I’ve got a job, a home, and my life is back on track,” heshared. “Without Second Step, I don’t know where I’d be.”From Uncertainty to Advocacy: Hazel’s Journey with JFSAHazel Hobert’s path has been anything but easy. After living atthe Shannon West Youth Shelter due to a lack of stableparental care, she struggled with trauma, uncertainty, anddifficult choices—turning to drugs, negative influences, andenduring constant bullying just to cope. But everything beganto change on May 5, 2024, when Hazel received a call from aJFSA case manager offering housing support.But the support didn’t stop there. Ongoing case management, weekly check-ins,transportation, and access to JFSA’s pantry ensured he had the stability to move forward. ByJanuary 2025, Mr. Labarre was working with the Culinary Union, earning a steady income andrebuilding his confidence.Today, Mr. Labarre is more than housed—he’s thriving. His story is a powerful reminder ofwhat’s possible when compassion meets action. “At first, I didn’t know what to think. I was so used to being let down,” Hazel shared. “But mycase manager made me feel like I could believe in something again. I took a chance—and itchanged my life.”Since joining JFSA’s Second Step Program, Hazel has become drug-free, surrounded herselfwith positive support, and is now a Registered Behavioral Therapist (RBT). She’s resumedcollege, working toward her dream of becoming a special education teacher, and has evenbecome an advocate for homeless youth, speaking out on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.“For the first time in my life, I feel like I have a fighting chance,” Hazel said. “And I owe it all toJFSA and my case managers.” Hazel’s story is a testament to the life-changing power of support,resilience, and community.
