I am the faculty leaderfor the Japan – Japanese II study abroad program.I am originally from Saitama prefecture (rightabove or north of Tokyo), so I am familiar with theKanto area (Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, andKanagawa) and have taken students to the Kantoarea for several years. Next summer, I will lead agroup of students to the Kansai area, whichincludes Osaka and Kyoto.Osaka is one of the biggest cities in Japan and isknown for “Kuidaore,” which means “to ruinoneself by extravagance in food.” There are a lot ofdelicious street food vendors and restaurants, aswell as entertainment, such as bunraku(traditional puppet theater) and manzai (two-person comedy acts). We will stay there for twoweeks to experience Osaka city life and visitDotombori, Abeno Harukasu (observation deck),and Osaka Castle, among other site visits.Our Japanese class will be held 10:00am to12:00pm Monday to Thursday. Afterwards, we willdo some cultural exchange activities in theafternoon, such as teaching English to the localhigh school students and/or college students,presenting about Austin in Japanese and English,learning about Japanese cooking and preparingfood, and experiencing a tea ceremony. After Osaka, we will move to Kyoto, which is thehistorical capital city of Japan. There are manybeautiful Buddhist temples and old traditionalbuildings. We will visit the Sannomiya Motomachiarea, Kitano, Kinkakuji Temple, Nijo Castle, andthe Nishiki Market. We will also learn about WabiSabi through cultural activities such as Shodo(calligraphy) and Kado (flower arrangement).
