Some of our events - drives, autocross, track days - lend themselves to social dis-tancing so we’re planning more this year. Meetings are still on hold until it becomes safer to gather in larger groups and we’re being hopeful that we can still plan a fall picnic and life will be back to normal for the Christmas party in December. Keep a check on the calendar in the Roundup (page 6) and website, and watch for email information and updates from the president and event chairs.Did you know that every PCA membership comes with a free co-membership? Check out page 9 for details! LHR is in need of some volunteers. For one, we’d like to form a new committee for charity. This committee would nd charitable causes for our club to get behind and plan events to carry it out. Other committees could use some help also so if you’re interested in helping with the socials or Fiesta Challenge, please contact one of the board members.Speaking of Fiesta Challenge - we had to cancel last year’s festival because SA postponed then canceled Fiesta because of - oh you know - Covid! This year, we’re planning to hold ours (April 17 & 18) even if SA cancels or postpones Fiesta. As with everything - tenative at this time - on Saturday April 17th plans include a concours with awards presented after judging, then an auc-tion to benet our chosen charity followed by a rally with awards given out at the destination point. Those will be held at the Porsche of San Antonio dealership. On Sunday, April 18th, the autocross will be held at Ratama. See page 30 for just a few of the auction items.Bluebonnet pictures! The bluebonnets will be out soon and I’d like to do another issue featuring your Porsche in the bluebonnets. Find a patch, take a picture and send it to me! President’s Corner BY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENT It’s a new year and we all hope a better one for all. While we want to be diligent in our safety protocols against Covid 19, we can see light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. We have been able to organize and carry off several types of events safely and will continue to plan those as long as we have good cooperation from all on masking and distancing. By the way, if you haven’t gotten your PCA mask, come to an event and we have one for you for free. See our expanded event calendar for 2021. I want to thank our board members for their commitment to grow and improve our club in 2021. Vice President James Bricken is always working at our Autocross and Track Days and is my back-up. Ignacio Fortuno is our new treasurer and a professional and enthusiastic ofcer. Susie Bush, our secretary, is a tireless supporter and helps with everything. I am privileged to have this board. I think at the beginning of our year I should remind our members of the sponsors who help make our events and activities possible and encourage you to favor them with your business when you can. Without a doubt the Porsche Center is our biggest supporter. From allowing us use of their facility for many events, multiple nancial contributions to charity events, and newsletter sponsorship, they are always there. Thanks to Don Faerber and the whole crew at the dealership for their continued support. Jones Autowerks is another very involved newsletter sponsor and Bob Jones is tireless in his work at Autocross and Track Days. Long time newsletter sponsors Xpel, Lee Michaels Jewelry, and Harris Hill Track continue their support and Associated Collision is sponsoring for the second year. I encourage all members to get involved. Try an Autocross; experience the thrill of feeling your nely engineered car on a racetrack. Don’t be intimidated! Take these activities at your own pace. Join in on our drives and rallies for fun use of your car and to experience some great Texas backroads. You can also join me in spifng up your car for the Concours---it is so rewarding to see your Porsche at its best. Hope to see you soon! ZONE 5 NOTES CHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP Happy New Year! Thanks for being a part of PCA in 2021. While the last year has been tough on all of us, the club continues to grow and remains nancially strong. With over 136,000 members PCA remains the largest single marque car club in the world!A lot is going on in the club. At the National level, we have Parades, Treffens, Tech tactics, Werks reunion, Porscheplatz, club racing, sim racing, and more. National level media put out by the club includes Panorama and Club Racing news in prints, and e-Brake news, Performance News, as well as much content on Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I hope you are taking advantage of your membership and enjoying some of these events and platforms. Many of our events have changed due to the pandemic, but we are still doing a lot across the region. Autocrosses, of which you all are starting a series this year, club racing, and drives and tours. While I encourage you to get out and participate in the national events - including parade which is practically in our backyard this year - there are a couple of zone wide events that occur which you might nd of interest: Boxstoberfest, 10-12 Sept, is becoming more of a zone event with more drives and social activities. Run out of Fredericksurg, TX for over 14 years, it is the closest multi region event and open to all Porsches and PCA members. Stay tuned for additional details.Another popular event in zone 5 is PCA Palooza. Run out of Eureka Springs, AR, it is a really fun event that has been held for over 19 years.I look forward to seeing you out on the road!ChuckZone 5 Rep10 LH ROUNDUP
MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELL Autocross or Tracking?I know this is a little off the wall but having written this column for over 12 years and with so little club activ-ity this past year, it is sometimes hard to find a topic to write about, so hang on!Which do you participate in and which is best for you: autocross or tracking? Maybe both so let’s explain what they are. For the experienced this will be old hat.Autocrosses are normally run on large parking lots and consist of a winding course outlined by traffic cones and the challenges come quickly. The speeds are moderate with the max speed for a 911 (the benchmark PCA uses) of 60 mph. A run through the course will be from 40 seconds to a minute and you will have been challenged by 10 or more turns con-sisting of cones you slalom around or gates you drive through.A tracking event, on the other hand, is done on an established layout of normally two to three miles of asphalt with approximately 11 turns and several straightaways. Speeds on the straightaways may exceed 100 mph. Tracking turns are separated by some length of straightaway and you have time between them, whereas in an autocross the chal-lenges come at you much faster. As you can see, the events differ but both are designed to allow you to learn the handling character-istics of your car and improve your driving skills. Both events require your car to be safety-inspected at the event and you must wear a Snell approved helmet when driving. Some members choose one over the other and some enjoy both. If constant challenges are uncomfortable, I would suggest our very safe and controlled track events. In these events you are paired with drivers of your skill level and there is no pressure to drive faster than your comfort level. That said, I would recommend everyone to try both. Neither of the events are a race and both are set up and run with safety as the primary focus. I would suggest for older drivers that the autocross is a good training environment. Yes, the challenges come up quicker but that is a good way hone our awareness skills. Why? When something unusual or unexpected happens on the highway, you will have the skill to respond safely and prevent an accident. Remember even in an autocross there is no pressure to drive faster than your comfort level (that is aimed at the new participants, not the experienced drivers). Now is the time to get your car ready for the upcom-ing season. James Bricken is planning an autocross in February and we will also be having a track event to kick off the season. Have fun and drive safely!LH ROUNDUP 11
Meet the Longhorn...Mike MatthewsTell us a bit about yourself/family/background? Hi, I’m Mike Matthews and I was born and raised in Michigan where my family had a number of lumber yards. I worked at the lumber yard for what seemed to many years and I’ve stacked more lumber that most people have seen.In high school I met the love of my life, Shelley. We have two children, Mikel is 45 and Tami is 43. I served in the USAF. After leaving the AF I because a software engineer and have continued that occupation since. We moved to San Antonio in 2011.What year did you join PCA? We joined PCA in 2003 but have owned Porsches since 1988. We hadn’t heard about the PCA until we bought the Boxster. What other regions have you belonged to? Lincoln Trail Region where I served as Vice President for a number of years and then president for 2 or 3 terms. Currently we are members of the Longhorn Region and I’ve been a vice president and president. What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? Shelley and I started out with a 1987 924S in 1988. The next Porsche we bought in 2003 was a 2001 Boxster which we still have. I then added a ‘72 914, ‘70 914-6 and a Cayman R.What’s your favorite Porsche memory? I think it was the first drive we took in the Boxster. We decided to drive down The Great Mississippi River Drive. We went over to Dubuque IA and drove down the GMRD, just the two of us. It was a lot of fun, top down, sweaters on, and smiles on our faces. The other favorite Porsche memory was when I took 1st place at the Parade autocross in MO. I will most likely never do that again but man it was fun! What LHR events do you enjoy most? All of them! Shelley and I love the drives. She can sit back and watch the landscape while I concentrate on driving. I enjoy autocrossing and track days. We have rallied and the next time I will have her drive and I’ll be the navigator. What’s your favorite Porsche? For racing, the 917, nothing beats it in my book. The other is the 904 GTS. What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/partici-pate in? I am an avid photographer where I shoot autosports, colliding water drops, landscapes, hummingbirds, and almost everything else except for portraits. I don’t like my subjects talking back to me.Now I am combining two bad habits into one (photog-raphy and astrophotography). Meet the Longhorn...Mike MullenTell us a bit about yourself/family/background? I am married with three children, and one grandson. I am an Army retiree with twenty-one years in service. I graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Medicine, Master of Physician Assistant Studies and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Medicine, Bachelor of Science. I am currently working as a Physician Assistant. What year did you join PCA? My wife and I officially became members in 2017. What other regions have you belonged to? The Longhorn PCA is the only region that would accept me.What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? We currently have a 2014 991.1 Carrera S, 2014 981 Cayman S, 2017 Macan S, 2017 718 Boxster S, and 2021 Macan S. We previously owned a 2016 Macan S. What’s your favorite Porsche memory? I have a lot of great memories. The one that comes most to mind is the first autocross I participated in at a national event, Porsche Parade in Boca Raton, Fl. The track for the event was on an actual racetrack and was good for hitting triple digit speeds. The entirety of the event was narrated over the loudspeakers by the announcers. I was staged for my final run when an announcement was made that a car before me pan-caked itself into the wall and was limping off. I made the decision to attempt my best run despite being a little concerned for damaging my car, and when I com-pleted the run, over the loudspeaker all I could hear was “wow, wow, wow that was a clean run by Mike Mullen, he managed to shave 10 seconds off his time!” I found out later that performance got me a first-place trophy which I thought was pretty good for only my fourth autocross event I have attended - Irish luck, I guess. I have been a big fan of autocross and have not missed a single event since. What LHR events do you enjoy most? I like the drives because I get to spend the time with my wife. We both lack work life balance so often will find ourselves working more than anything else. This is a great opportunity to just hang out. (This is the response she told me was correct.) I also like autocross…What’s your favorite Porsche? My favorite Porsche is any GT car, especially the GT3. What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/partici-pate in? I enjoy working out, watching movies, washing and detailing my cars. I also enjoy spending time with my neighbors and other friends at an occasional dinner and night out. LH ROUNDUP 13

Starting the New Year on the Right Wheel Article Mike VriesengaOn January 2, 2021 Porsche owners started the New Year off on the right wheel with a “Time, Speed, and Social Distancing” rally. Following the mandatory briefings in the Lowes parking lot, 13 cars with their drivers and passengers headed north on I-10 with directions to parts unknown. Led by Chuck and Susie Bush in their luxurious Panamera, the goal was to arrive at two “checkpoints” precisely on time. Deviations from the ideal time at these two check points were totaled, and the driver/navigator with the smallest deviation (measured in seconds) “won.” Each team had printed directions with leg distances, leg times, total dis-tances, and detailed descriptions of turn points to guide them. GPS and phone usage was discouraged. Stop watches and slide rules were encouraged.Following the “boring” part going north on I-10, teams headed north on Welfare-Waring and Old San Antonio roads through the party town of Bankersmith to the first check point in the Luckenbach parking lot. Those who stopped checked in with Stephen Grigory, and confirm-ing that they were still somebody (Because everybody’s somebody in Luckenbach), headed out after a break. Those who didn’t stop (you know who you are), left us to wonder if they were somebody or not.Leaving Luckenbach, teams followed the scenic and winding roads towards Flugrath, Albert, and Sandy, ending up on some tiny backroads between Willow City and Fredericksburg. Do you remember the good angel and devil on Donald Duck’s shoulders? How about Homer Simpson? On Saturday the competitive spirit on the right shoulder was saying go slow and stay on time, while the devil on the left shoulder was saying, “Look at these roads! Hammer down, dude!” Of course, there were also politically incorrect spirits on some shoul-ders, from the old F-troop TV series, saying, “We’re the Hekawi?”In the end Bill & Irene Dorsey’s competitive spirit led them to victory with a 100 second overall deviation, and Kris and Betty Campbell came in second with a 134 second deviation. Stephen Wright’s devil brought him in 11 minutes early with a big grin on his face. Ignacio Fortuna “coulda been a contenda” arriving at the last point within 2 seconds of ideal, but we didn’t have a Luckenbach time for him. As for the “Hekawi? You’ll have to ask.Driver’s meeting - learning the ins and outs of a rally.Welcome to the rst rally of 2021!Did somebody say lunch?Chris Packham, Maggie Bennett, Betty Campbell, Chuck and Susie Bush.Photos by Susie Bush and Kris CampbellLH ROUNDUP 17
Getting a Porsche Dirty Article by Rob Turner Maverick RegionNo doubt there are Porsche owners who will not drive their cars in anything approximating rain. Hell, even if the threat of rain is a week away, their pristine rides stay safely conned in their garages. And a spec of dust, heaven forbid! Hey, I get it, guilty as charged. My Racing Yellow Porsche Cayman 981 S a/k/a Lemonhead (or as my PCA plates say LMNHED) does not like rain. Or more accurately, LMNHED’s owner does not like rain and residue splashing LH. So what, you say, “take it to a carwash.” Surely you jest. Nobody but me washes LMNHED. I wash it regularly anyway. Dirt, no dirt, I love washing it. My neighbors must think I am crazy, obsessive or most likely both. But washing can also be helpful. Every wash, I clean the barrels of the wheels, and that allows me to carefully examine the tires and brakes. Recently I noticed a sharp screw embedded in the rear tire. I carefully put the car up on jack stands and removed the offending tire. No offence but I do not like to take the car to Discount Tire, I worry they will break something, but I did take the tire there. (Note: I am a 30-year loyal customer!) Of course, they immediately took care of the screw. Crisis averted. Point is, washing the car frequently has its advantages.Okay, we have set the scene so to speak. I do not like to get LH dirty. But I also need to get out of the house during COVID. Some weeks, I will take a long drive up to the Red River which marks the border between Texas and Oklahoma. I have a route that is a blast, culminating in a long, lonely bridge that crosses over into OK. This bridge has sight lines for over two miles and most of the time, there is zero trafc – just saying. Over the recent holiday break, I had the chance to take my older son from N. Texas (where we live) back to the Austin area (where he lives). He stuffed all 6’8” of his tall frame into LH and we trekked South. Weather forecast said a slight chance of rain – 20%. Of course, we hit the 20%. With all the road spray and grime on IH-35, LH was pretty dirty by the time we got to Austin. I spent the night and had dinner with an old friend, so I was up and ready to go the next AM. My plan was to take back roads home. Forecast called for a very slight chance of rain, what could go wrong?I took FM 1431 from Cedar Park to Marble Falls. It is a great twisty-turny road, but you do have to anticipate trafc since it is the most direct route between the two towns. And in that one perfect moment when you have a clear road and yellow signs that say: “Turns next 2 miles”, you hit it. Hard. I turned off before Marble Falls and took FM 1174 to Bertram and that is where my luck ran out. It rained hard, but it fell the hardest as I was driving through a road-work zone. Oh yes, there was mud covering the road where they were working on wash outs and low road crossings. I could just hear the slop of mud as it ung its sticky ooze all over the underside of LH. Oh yeah, the Cayman LMNHED was now getting good and dirty.US Highway 281 is a great Porsche cruising road. I have written about it in the past, great sight lines and plenty of passing zones, plus it is a drop-dead gorgeous part of Texas. Picking it up in Burnet I took it until FM 1189 up to Lipan. Finally, I reached the reason for all these backroads - FM 4. A narrow ribbon of tarmac that reveals its greatness slowly. Long straight stretches then tight 90° bends followed by looooonnnng constant radius turns, but it all leads you to about ve glorious miles from just north of Santo to just south to Palo Pinto that is the best stretch of bendy road in N. Texas. The road dips and turns back on itself descending into an ancient riverbed then climbs back out. It is usually my luck that I get either the run down or up unimpeded, this time I got lucky – zero trafc. But as luck would have, there had been a recent shower, so the road was slick. I gauged the traction limits and dialed the Cayman in just below. Sport Plus mode? Check. Sport Exhaust mode? Check. Manual PDK shifting? Check, check and check. Then I hit it. The 3.4 Lt at six singing as I snapped down a gear to take a tight corner, the sound of the exhaust back pressure crackling again and again as I down shifted from fth to second to take one tight corner. Then the roar of acceleration as the rear tires bit into the pavement, FM 4’s abrasive chipseal provided plenty of grip off center. But just as fast as this glorious stretch started, it was over. The afternoon was stretching towards evening and I still had more than 100 miles to run before home. Back in my own garage, twisting the key, I stopped the great heart of the motor. It was silent, I mean so quiet, as I sat there absorbing the greatness of the Cayman. Then I got out and took a look at LH and I just had to laugh, it was dirty. No, not just dirty, lthy. I have owned a lot of Porsches and I have never gotten one this dirty. But I also smiled to myself as it meant that I would get to wash and detail it. A beautiful weekend forecast called for hose, wash bucket, special paint shampoo, soft plush purple wash towels, orbital polisher and high end carnauba wax. Perfect.LMHHED was glad to be home and I think it wore the badge of dirt proudly for a few days. It meant it had been driven and enjoyed, it had played in the rain and had a good time. But on Saturday, I think it was ready to get clean again. Sometimes it is OK to get your Porsche dirty. It means you get to wash it and make it perfect. And on that exhaust note, see you all next time. 18 LH ROUNDUP
