January 6, 2023ג״פשת תבט ג’’ייחיו תשרפ INTERNAL4:08 PMDear Parents, Prior to his death, Yaakov gathered his 12 sons together. He bentched each of them with a bracha uniquely suited to the future role that son’s shevet would play in Klal Yisrael. In the bracha he gave his son Yissachar, Yaakov noted: דבוע סמל יהיו לובסל ומכש טיו המענ יכ ץראהו בוט יכ החונמ אריו. Yissachar saw that peaceful serenity is good and that the land was pleasant, and he bent his shoulder to bear a heavy load.Rav Yeruchem Levovitz zt”l points out that there is an apparent contradiction between the beginning of the Possuk and the end. The Possuk begins by referring to the pleasant and tranquil existence in a beautiful land that Yissachar will enjoy. Just as we begin to imagine this idyllic reality, the possuk describes this life of Menucha as one where the person enjoying this life has shoulders bent under the weight of a heavy burden he is carrying. This hardly matches the previous picture! The Mashgiach answers that Yaakov Avinu is teaching us the true definition of peace and tranquility. It is diametrically the opposite of what we believe it to be. We think that true serenity can only be achieved on a deserted beach, with the backdrop of gentle waves breaking at the shore and bright sunshine; free of any worries and responsibilities. While indeed this is pleasant, it actually restricts our inner state and makes it dependent on external factors that are often beyond our control. The Torah teaches us that our mission is to rise above whichever situation we encounter and to focus inwards. We must carry within ourselves a reserve of inner serenity and joy that we can access despite external factors and influences. The end of the possuk is thus the secret to the source of joy described at the beginning of the bracha. When we commit to a life of Torah and Mitzvos we achieve true simchas hachaim – a life of בוט יכ החונמ אריו.תבש טוג!Rabbi Ochs● The Middle school boys had a very special Toameha today to give shevach v'hodaa to Hashem for Rabbi Benmergui's tremendous nes.
