January 26, 2024ד״פשת טבש ז”ט חלשב תשרפ TO THE FULLEST 4:32 PMDear Parents,The parsha begins: םעה תא הערפ חלשב יהיו – and it was when Pharoh sent out the peopleThe Gemara in Megillah explains that the word יהיו is a composition of two words: היה יוו, woe it was. Thus, the word יהיו connotes that there was some sort of difficulty at that time. The Medrash Rabbah states that הערפ expressed his woe over sending out לארשי ינב from םירצמ. The Medrash explains with a לשמ:A traveler found a small satchel but was unaware of its contents. Unwilling to carry it around, he asked a stranger on the same journey to take the bag, and after much pressure, the stranger acquiesced. When they arrived, the new owner opened the satchel and saw that it was packed with precious gems worth a fabulous sum. The traveler who had so easily given up the bag began to cry and tear his clothes, bemoaning: “I had so much wealth in my hands, and I gave it away so easily without getting anything in return.”Pharoh felt like that traveler, explains the medrash. He let Bnei Yisrael leave without gaining anything for himself. The obvious question on this Medrash arises: How can the two be compared? The man who gave up the satchel to the stranger did so willingly. It was a bad choice, but a choice he made. Pharaoh, however, was struck with ten Makkos and was afflicted by Hashem until he was forced to let Bnei Yisrael go from the immense pressure. The Meforshim explain that הערפ wasn’t decrying the fact that he was forced to let Bnei Yisrael go. Rather, he was bemoaning that he hadn’t recognized the extent of the greatness of the Jewish people. Imagine someone hires an individual for a menial position, and after the individual leaves discovers that the worker was extremely talented, highly skilled, and competent to raise the level of the entire business. This is how Pharoh felt: He had Klal Yisrael as his subjects, and he just let them build pyramids. What a lost opportunity! This is the message of the Medrash and the לשמ. We don’t realize the potential we have as Yidden, how much we can accomplish, and how great we can become. Let us chap-arein every minute. Let us use our talents to their fullest.תבש טוג! The boys learned about MyPlate and what should be included in a meal. The boys had a lot to say to add to the lesson, and gave great examples of fruits and vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy. Nurse Miri then worked with the boys to put together their own healthy snack: a delicious fruit and yogurt parfait topped with granola! ● As part of the Shiluv Program (disabilities awareness) in 4th and 5th grade boys, both groups were treated to speakers on Tuesday this week. Mrs. Carol Steinberg came into 4th grade to discuss what life is like in a wheelchair. Students were able to ask questions and try out some of the wheelchair's most exciting functions. Mr. Ari Levitt came to speak to the 5th graders about living with autism. The 5th graders asked insightful questions and enjoyed hearing the uplifting, honest, and at times surprising answers of this remarkable young man. Thank you to Mrs. Reena Slovin, Mrs. Sharon Goldstein, and Gateways for developing and running the program.● At the G.O. Tu B’Shvat activity, 1-8G were treated to smoothie bowls at the “Fruit Bowl” Cafe, established and run by the 8th grade G.O. girls. They also decorated frisbees with fruit-themed designs, and then used their frisbees to play frisbee golf. Thank you to Nurse Miri for all her help with the smoothies.● The Midwinter Learning Program was a smashing success, with over 70% of the boys participating. Their learning should be a zchus for Acheinu Bais Yisroel. On Tuesday, the boys that learned every day of vacation enjoyed a delicious lunch of pizza and fries. Mazel tov to the winners of the raffle: Nochum Dessler (6B) won the Artscroll pocket size Mikraos Gedolos and Aron Dovid Luria (8B) won the engraved Zstander table- top shtender. ● 6G, as part of their curriculum, study Shiras Chana. To support this perek, they created individual laminated Hafrashas Challah cards with Shiras Chana inserted.● The winners of this week’s Shabbos Malkisa program raffle were Tziporah Krochmal, Simmy Shepard, and Esther Herbstman! The girls are working on next week’s missions.● The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new UPK playground structure created much excitement! The children- who watched the step-by-step construction- are thrilled to finally enjoy it! ● Thank you TA for providing our staff with tasty Tu B’shvat treats!● K1 had so much fun making their edible fruit trees for Tu B’shvat!● K2 went on a fun nature walk to feed the birds in honor of Shabbos Shira!● In honor of Tu B’Shvat, 4G created edible fruit trees out of grapes, pomegranates, kiwis, and chocolate chips.Uniform Gemach AnnouncementThe make-up (and final) girls' Aerobics & Movement afterschool class will take place this Monday, April 24th Mazel Tov!
