sponsored by HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS Filling Your Child s Emotional Piggy Bank As adults we understand the concept of a bank account we deposit money to save it for a time when we need to withdraw it such as to pay a bill Kids do the same with their piggy bank They put money in the piggy bank from birthdays and allowance and they take money out when they want to buy something We also have an emotional piggy bank Throughout your day there are deposits and withdrawals Someone tells you that you are doing a good job on a difficult task deposit Someone cuts you off in traffic withdrawal Think about your child s emotions like an emotional piggy bank The amount that is in their emotional piggy bank reflects the amount of trust and security that is built up in their relationship with you How to make deposits into your child s emotional piggy bank 1 Spend one on one time with your child Notice what they are doing during that time and comment on it For example if you and your child are building with blocks say Wow You built a very tall tower 2 Keep your commitments Make sure that you keep the promises that you make to your child so they can count on you 3 Attend to the small things Small actions like putting a note in their lunch box shows that you are thinking about them 4 Apologize when you make a withdrawal Parents are human we make mistakes too When you make a withdrawal from your child s emotional piggy bank a simple apology can be powerful In addition to making deposits avoid these common withdrawals 1 Screen time Avoid using screens when your child is trying to get your attention or talk with you 2 Giving too many commands There are times that we need to give children instructions However give instructions only when necessary 3 Asking too many questions Too many questions can restrict conversation Instead of asking How was your spelling test try saying I was thinking about you during your spelling test to encourage conversation Kelsie Hendrickson PhD ABPP Licensed Psychologist St Luke s Sponsored by 11 J a n u a r y 2 0 2 5
