To hit driver, or not to hit driver? That is always the question. Weall experience that moment of dread when we stand on the teewith a narrow fairway or a hole that just doesn’t seem to fit oureye. Our rational side tells us to play it smart and hit less thandriver because we don’t hit driver that straight. But deep down,we want to take out the big dog and let him eat! I have good newsand bad news. The bad news is you do not hit 3 wood nearly asstraight as you would think. The good news is that you probablydo not hit driver nearly as crooked as you think either. When we choose 3 wood over driver, we like to pat ourselves onthe back and think that we’ve finally got a hold on proper coursestrategy. That is until we knock our 3 wood into the trees andcurse ourselves for being a chicken by hitting the 3 wood insteadof the driver. When comparing our accuracy between driver and 3wood, most golfers with handicaps ranging from 0 to 20 are only2.5 yards straighter with their 3 woods. For example, a 10handicap’s offline standard deviation was 22.7 yards with driverand 20.2 yards with 3 wood. That same group of 10 handicappersgave up 30 yards of distance to gain that extra 2.5 yards ofaccuracy, which is a terrible trade-off. This ratio of giving up 30yards of distance for 2.5 yards of accuracy is consistent across allhandicaps from 0 to 20. Only 22% of golfers were noticeably moreaccurate with 3 wood by having an offline standard deviationgreater than 5 yards with driver as compared to 3 wood. 13% ofplayers were more accurate with driver, and 20% had an offlinestandard deviation within one yard between driver and 3 wood. Therefore, the only real reason to hit 3 wood instead of driverwould be if driver would go too far or brings a hazard crossing thefairway into play.THE DIVOT | GOLF PROformance January 2024DRIVE DRIVE TO SURVIVETO SURVIVEFROM TRAVIS BREGMAN, PGAFIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL

The average fairway is between 30 and 50 yards wide, and mostgolf holes do not have penalty areas on both sides. As a result, most golf holes will have more than 60 yards between penaltyareas on either side of the hole. This is critical informationbecause at least 87% of golfers with handicaps from 0 to 20 keepat least 70% of their drives within 30 yards of the center of thefairway. The issue is that the one to three statistically poor drivesthat we hit each round are the ones that we remember mostvividly. The truth is that most golfers are not nearly as inaccuratewith their driver as they think. Proper course management is based on understanding how faryou hit each club, so you can choose the proper club based on theplayable landing area that you will be hitting your shot. Avoidingpenalty shots is our number one priority, but a close second ishitting driver as often as possible, which will give us the bestopportunity to hit the green in regulation. If you plan to play itsafe off the tee then hit something less than 3 wood, so your shotdispersion will be significantly smaller, such as a 5 wood or hybrid. There is an old saying that sums this article up perfectly. “If you’regoing to lay up, then lay up.” THE DIVOT | GOLF PROformance January 2024HOLE IN ONE ALERTHOLE IN ONE ALERTC A L L A W A Y G O L FC A L L A W A Y G O L F PERFORMANCE FITTING EVENTPERFORMANCE FITTING EVENTGOLF PROformance January 2024Congratulations are in order for H. WAYNE’S WORDWAYNE’S WORDWell, Happy New Year! I thought I would touch base on some areas that pertain toseasonal change and what will be happening until February orso. December 21st is the shortest day of the year. Every dayafter this is one day closer to spring playing conditions andour annual Wildflower Bloom.A timely topic - Rain Policy and Play. Let’s just start with, inthis part of the world, if we have days of no play because ofrain, that's a good thing! Droughts affect our local golf waymore than rain days. With water restrictions and publicscrutiny of our water use, as a club, we need to welcome therain and accept that a few days of resting the course orrestricting carts is good for our long-term success. We dohave reclaimed water, but we rely on potable water to blendwith the reclaimed water, which accounts for about 30% ofour usage. Lastly, the rain keeps the lake desirable all year. If we have standing water on the greens or our professionalassessment is that traffic will damage the turf, we close thecourse to preserve the condition of the course. If the radarshows more rain is coming, we stay closed. Early in the wet season, December and January, we tend tobe more restrictive with cart usage as nothing is growingdue to low light levels and cooler soil temperatures. InFebruary and March, we become more forgiving as soilwarm days lengthen and turf grows. Our team is alwaysreviewing conditions and updating the pro shop on thestatus of the course. Coots are just about done consuming pond weed, so they willget bolder in moving out on to turf areas to feed. We have 3feeding stations: 13 Island, Wayne’s Island, and the irrigationisland. They are responding to each with expected success. Wewill up the feeding and pressure with dogs to make them feelmore comfortable when they stay in desired areas. We tried touse the back of the 13th tee as a station, but the local Coopers’hawks and Peregrine falcon wanted to use it as a feedingstation too given the perfect perch in the trees above. This wasnot to the coots liking, so they stopped using the area. Asalways, a challenge when we have water in the lake. But wehave a good start. During the month of January, we will beworking on the 6th Hole and issues that have been ongoing inthis area of the course. Adam and I have been visiting with ValleVerde Senior Living facility that borders this area. They havebeen receiving an increase of golf ball damage, and there havebeen several close misses with their residents. Todd Eckenrode, our course architect, looked at this area and hisrecommendation is to make the hole play more left to right onthe second shot by creating more space left. By shifting therough to the left and expanding the fairway, the player will havea larger bailout, encouraging play further left, and relievingpressure on the right side along Valle Verde. The GreenCommittee and Board reviewed Todd’s plan to remove someidentified cedars in this area in order to create the fairwayexpansion. At a later date, sometime during the course projector after, Oaks will be planted and a native area will beestablished in the whole triangle area. We needed to get startednow so the fairway area would be well established by spring. Ona last note, the Club and I have been chosen for the GCSAAPresident’s Award for Environmental Stewardship. Theassociation reviews work facilities do in this area and haschosen us for this award. So a small seed that we planted yearsago in trying to reduce water usage has bloomed into nationalrecognition. I Want to say thank you for supporting and trustingme in this endeavor. I never thought it would go here orbecome this acknowledged. Cheers!Wayne MillsTHE DIVOT | GOLF

With the golf course restoration scheduled to begin in March of 2025,we encourage everyone to sign up for and enjoy our playingopportunities this coming year. So please join us in signing up for ourfirst Kouples’ Kapers of the year scheduled for Sunday, February 18.We promise a fun format and wonderful dinner to follow. We canalways help single players find a partner, as well. The ladies will square off in March for their Club Championship andwe are hoping for a full field and lively gallery to follow us around. Onthe heels of this will be the men’s first major of the year, the Men’sSenior Club Championship. We’ll alert you well in advance to thecompetitions happening later in the year. Of course, we’ll continue tohold ladies’ guest days on the first Thursday of each month and men’sstag days on the third Wednesday of each month. We’d like to seegreat participation in both. Gross and net competitions for both makeit fun and competitive for everyone. We would be remiss if we didn’t offer a reminder regarding golf attire. All members and their guests are expected to wear appropriateapparel. A final word about the treatment of our beautiful course. Most LaCumbre golfers do their best to rake bunkers appropriately, but weencourage everyone to step up their game here! None of us likes toplay a ball from a shoe print, so please rake carefully after your shotand encourage your playing partners to do so, as well. Similarly, it’smaddening to see a player take a huge divot, then play on withouttaking the five seconds necessary to fill it with sand. Finally, fix yourball marks on the greens–along with one of two more for goodmeasure. Play well and have fun on the course in 2024!CHRIS PORTNEY AND HENNING THORSEN, GOLF COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRSTHE DIVOT | GOLF

Engage in afluid swinging motion, directing the ball with purpose andaggression. Serena Williams, renowned for her prowess inthis area, exemplifies how mastering swinging volleys canturn defensive situations into offensive victories. It is the new year, and with it comes plenty of new goals andaspirations. I said it last year, but I will say it again: we need toset goals and give ourselves challenges so that we continue togrow. When it comes to your goals and your actions, I want toencourage you that the real benefit comes from the progresswithin them rather than the perfection of them. We will neverbe perfect no matter how hard we try, and when we beatourselves up for not being perfect, it discourages usfrom setting new goals in the future. When perfection is ouronly thought, we don’t tend to even start because not acting iseasier than failing. Switch that mindset and realize that eachstep in the right direction is the real victory. Don’t let the fear offailure or the thought of not being perfect keep you frommaking progress. "Shoot for the Moon. Even if youmiss, you'll land among the stars" is a famous quote first saidby Norman Vincent Peale and is the perfect example of what Iam trying to get across. You may have missed your goal of themoon, but when you look back, you will realize how far youhave come and how much you have grown.
