BulletinJuly 2020• 5DDeeaarr RReeaaddeerrssTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. See page 16 to see if you areeligible – even if you are not, please pass the information on to thosewho are.Make sure you take care and …KKeeeepp RReeaaddiinngg!!CCaarroolleePoverty IAT LAUNCHES EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY GenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAME BUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 10/7/20 10:01 Page 5January 2023• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole Happy New Year to everyone. I hope itbrings you everything you wish for; I think this is going to be a very eventful year for me – but more of that in later editions. One of the things I am hoping to do this year is to increase my artistic endeavours, for those of you who do not know, I went to art college at sixteen – which was either the making or breaking of me, depending on who you speak to. I mention this only because I have been trans xed by our front cover. I love the composition of this image and the black background makes it both powerful and reminds me of the dark winter nights. There are plenty of other images in this edition, the North East Branch report on their Christmas Do, see pages 22 – 26. I am not sure I think there are any prize winners among the photographs, but it certainly conveys the message of everyone having a great time and I was very jealous when I saw them! I was also asked if they were to advertise their events more widely, would I go to Barnsley? I certainly would if I had the chance to revisit the 80s!We also have a report – about an event I did attend – the European ZHA meeting at The Crick Institute in London, see pages 14 – 17. Although it was true to say we had some technical issues, it was a hybrid meeting after all, I still found it a very informative get together and it was great to catch up with colleagues who I had not seen in person for a while. Lastly, I had an interesting email from Stefanie at Babraham Institute. She wanted me to point out that in the answers to John Bland’s Animal Quiz on page 36 of the November Bulletin, the ‘animal’ referred to as an Inari Fox is not an animal at all but a soft toy, probably a Furby. Inari Foxes are not animals either – but mythical creatures, who acted as messengers for the goddess Inari, in her female form! Welcome to 2023!

Bulletin14 • January 2023 ZHA EURO Having joined the world of Animal Technology at the height of the pandemic, the Zebrafish Husbandry Association European Meeting was my first chance to attend a laboratory animal event like this in person. The meeting attracted an impressive turn out, both in person and online, with attendees from around the world. Among these were a diverse range of people from across the Zebrafish community, including animal care technicians, researchers and facility managers. The opportunity to exchange ideas with other ‘fish nerds’ was, for me, just as important as the talks. On the first afternoon, we also split into discussion groups covering different topics, from training and staffing to feeding and the 3Rs. Following this came Happy Hour which was a chance to continue conversations from throughout the day, catch up with good friends and take some embarrassing pictures in the aquatic-themed photo booth!

Page 15

BulletinJanuary 2023 • 15 The programme really had something for everyone – from those new to the industry or with decades of experience under their belt. There was plenty of food for thought and an emphasis on the 3Rs throughout. Highlights for me included Becca Frank’s keynote address exploring naturalistic housing for Zebrafish, as well as JP Mocho’s presentation on severity levels. We also heard updates on the ARRIVE/PREPARE guidelines and caught up with the global Zebrafish community, from Ghana to Australia. Christian Lawrence’s husbandry Q & A session sparked lively discussions about colony management, with many attendees contributing their real-life experiences and ideas.

Page 16

Bulletin16 • January 2023 Speakers attended both in person and virtually – whilst there was the occasional technical difficulty during the online talks, the programme went relatively smoothly for a hybrid event. I particularly enjoyed being able to submit questions via the Whova app during the talks. This was a good way of making sure everyone could be heard and less daunting than raising your hand in front of a room full of people. The speakers also followed up on everyone’s questions on the app afterwards, so nothing was left unanswered. The online platform was available until the end of 2022, meaning that attendees could continue conversations for some time.ZHA Euro 2022 was certainly a great success, thanks the incredible efforts of the organisers and the generous support from sponsors. This is the second zebrafish event The Crick Networking Fund has supported, the previous one was in October 2019 which was open to technicians based in the United Kingdom. Both meetings were co-hosted by UCL and KCL, with Sheffield University and A Fundação Champalimaud joining us in 2022.Fun in the photo booth!

Page 17

BulletinJanuary 2023 • 17Overall, I found the meeting very enjoyable, informative and I really felt part of a community. After all, that’s what the ZHA is all about – connecting Zebrafi sh users, from technicians to veterinarians to researchers to vendors, with the common goal of improving Zebrafi sh husbandry on a global level.Reporter: Hannah DaviesSITUATIONS VACANTVisit the Careers pages on the IAT Website for the latest vacancieshttps://www.iat.org.uk/vacanciesRecruitment advertising details from mail@prcassoc.co.uk

BulletinJanuary 2023 • 19 Being the last IAT Council meeting of 2022, the BoT thought it appropriate to provide a brief update to Council as to AS-ET activities during 2022. Following Steve Barnett’s decision to step down as a Trustee in 2021, Allan Thornhill was elected a Trustee in July 2022, primarily to keep the AS-ET website up to date and develop our online profile.Wendy Steel took over the fundraising from 2021 and has proven herself extremely adept in successfully attracting corporate sponsorship in these difficult financial times.AS-ET continues to thank and are indebted to, all our corporate sponsors and our individual supporters. As of beginning November 2022, AS-ET had approximately £50K funding available for educational bursaries, etc. All previous years’ audited accounts are available to view via this link https://www.as-et.org.uk/financials Applications for bursaries have been primarily for studying the IAT Levels 4, 5 and 6. Reassuringly, most applications are looking to match 50% funding with their employer, something that the Trustees have encouraged for a number of years.Excluding 2022, since AS-ET’s formation in 2010, AS-ET has distributed £173,153 on bursaries and support. To become an AS-ET supporter, please go to DONATE | aset (as-et.org.uk) there are several ways in which to contribute to further our aims.Emma Mustapha receiving her level 5 prize from Sir Richard Gardner.Sir Richard does the honours in presenting Michelle with her Level 6 prize.

Bulletin22 • January 2023 HEY YOU GUYS!!! The North East Branch Christmas PartyFor our end of year get together, the IAT North East England Branch went back to the 1980s for food and fancy dress in Barnsley – and although some were more committed to the theme than others, a great night was had by all and there were some fab costumes. The Branch subsidised ticket prices and our lovely trade sponsors covered the drinks – big thanks go to Agenda, Castium, Clinipath, IPS, LBS, NKP Isotec, Plexx and Tecniplast. We also took the opportunity to thank Judith who stepped down as Treasurer at the start of the year and will be leaving the Branch Committee in January as she beings a wind down to retirement. Judith has been involved in all things IAT NEE for 10+ years and will be really missed. As always, we would love to get more members out to events, so if you have any suggestions for future branch activities, please get in touch by emailing iatnortheastbranch@hotmail.co.uk and we look forward to seeing you in 2023!Reporter: Zoe SmithDinnerMaking a real effort!

Bulletin28 • January 2023 Dispatches...Animals in Science Regulated Unit Annual Reports 2019 – 2021Failure to Provide Food and WaterAs you may be aware, the ASRU Report for 2019 – 2021 has now been published. Once again it’s disappointing to see that failure to provide food and water resulting in an adverse welfare outcome for the animal, remains one of the most common reasons for non-compliance under the 1986 Act. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1112529/14.148_HO_Scientific_Procedures_ARA__web_.pdf Whilst it was more common that these issues occurred when the activity was conducted by a PIL holder rather than a member of technical staff, failing to provide sufficient food and/or water to animals, as part of basic husbandry and care is, I’m sure you will all agree, unacceptable. Establishments must always have robust procedures in place to ensure adequate provision of food and water to animals kept under the provisions of ASPA.Back in 2018 the IAT Animal Welfare Group (AWG) produced an advice note The Provision of Water and Food for Laboratory Animals. https://www.iat.org.uk/_files/ugd/a30180_26888d0872a04a3abb80f7c81f23de81.pdfThis was widely distributed and is available from the IAT website or the link above. This advice notice is for those working more generally within a husbandry setting, however, they can be printed off, popped up onto notice boards and distributed more widely, with the aim of highlighting this issue within your research community.Linda HoranFirst Published IAT Newsletter December 2022

BulletinJanuary 2023 • 29Policy Unit / ASRU updateAdvice on the use of non-human primates bred for use in scientifi c proceduresIn June, the Home Offi ce asked the Animals in Science Committee to provide advice on the use of non-human primates bred for use in scientifi c procedures. This is in line with Home Offi ce’s forward-look commission of advice to inform the Government’s policy on the regulation of the use of animals in scientifi c procedures. For the full report – https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nonhuman-primates-bred-for-use-in-scientifi c-purposesFor a ministerial response –https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nonhuman-primates-bred-for-use-in-scientifi c-purposes-ministers-responseFirst Published IAT Newsletter December 2022IAT Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group –Introduction to the MI Talent Research Culture survey reportResearch culture is defi ned by the Royal Society as encompassing the values, behaviours, expectations, attitudes and norms of our research communities. It infl uences researcher’s career pathways and determines the way that research is conducted and communicated. The IAT is the professional body for Animal Technicians across the UK and Ireland and the role of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group (EDI) group is to support Animal Technicians in their role and promote equity and equality and inclusion for all. The IAT survey (2022) identifi ed issues such as challenges around communication, engagement and support for Animal Technicians and the national survey conducted by MI Talent (information below) further reports on similar fi ndings and issues for all technical roles throughout the UK.Read more about MI TALENT – https://www.mitalent.ac.uk/

Bulletin30 • January 2023 Research Culture: A Technical LensThe UK higher education (HE) and research technical community is a highly skilled workforce with a diverse range of expertise. Technicians underpin the primary activities of universities and research institutes (RIs) providing technical excellence essential for research, teaching and knowledge transfer.A national online survey of UK technical staff was launched by TALENT (which is a Research England funded programme) in 2021.Key themes identified from the findings include:– Lack of recognition of technical staff for the expert contributions made to research.– A lack of understanding of technical roles.– Technical staff challenges with progression in the role.– Lack of technical staff support, encouragement and opportunity. The report findings offer insight into perceptions and experiences of research culture across the UK technical workforce and offer recommendations to improve and sustain a healthy research culture at institutions, inclusive of technical roles. The report is critical of employers’ research culture, as how people feel can have a huge impact on employee motivation and morale, productivity and ultimately care for the role and technician responsibilities. This is crucial for Animal Technicians and Animal Welfare standards. You can read the full report here – https://www.iat.org.uk/_files/ugd/a30180_38efa8364d974a4db7965fb3caa18756.pdfThe IAT EDI group has been working with a number of Animal Technicians across the UK in order to address these challenges and offers support when people need it most. Research has also been conducted specifically looking at the role of the Animal Technician across the UK focussing on the employee/employer relationship and what challenges face Animal Technicians on a day-to-day basis.
