BulletinJanuary 2022 • 5BulletinJuly 2020• 5Dear ReadersTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. These have to be submitted prior to the meeting, so make sure you do that. The Home Offi ce launched ‘Bridging ways of Working’ a change programme in July, which brings an auditing inspection process and different ways of communicating and interacting with the Home Offi ce – see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/research-and-testing-using-animals, so you might have questions about that. I think we can all expect to be discussing these changes for some time and I know the IAT have some very valid concerns regarding the new ways of interacting with the Home Offi ce and the Bulletin will be reporting on that when we hear more. I cannot believe that Dolly the Sheep was created 25 years ago, but I do remember the news around this at the time and on pages 11 – 12 you can read a report by Alanah Mudie, who spoke to Grahame Bulfi eld, the Director of the Roslin Institute at the time of this research programme. I found this is a very interesting read. It is Tech Month again in March – see page 4, I hope everyone is planning to participate. I also see that Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex Branch are hoping to run their AGM in person this year and I hope that happens (see page 21 for more details). Of course, Congress 2022 will also be in person and there is still time to register! The fi rst-time presenters’ session is to be renamed the ‘Steve Barnett First Time Presenters Session’ honouring Steve – who has devoted a large part of his career to training and teaching hundreds of Animal Technicians. Steve is also a Life Member of the IAT and recently retired as an AS-ET trustee where he raised thousands of pounds to support Animal Technicians who need funding for education and can request bursaries from the AS-ET Website. Corporate contacts will be sent a pro forma for all staff on their corporate membership. If anyone has any queries relating to their membership renewal, please contact the administrator (admin@iat.org.uk)Andrew Blake Tribute Award (ABTA)There had been discussion amongst the judging panel for the ABTA regarding how applications should be submitted. In the previous couple of years, the application had been a more informal process, but this did make it hard to judge on a like for like basis. It was agreed that a submission form with specifi c headings may lead applicants along the right lines. A new format will be put to Council for approval before the application reopens in 2022 for the 2023 award.Animal Technology and WelfareThe Chair of the Editorial Board was pleased to announce that the IAT have an agreement with EBSCO which allows them to include ATW on their listings. EBSCO are the leading provider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, e-books and discovery service to libraries of all kinds. The IAT also have a publishers’ portal with the Web of Science and the Editor will shortly be submitting a proposal for ATW to be included on the index. It is hoped that inclusion on these two indexes will raise the profi le of ATW, leading to more author submissions and thus securing the future of the journal. Bulletin8 • January 2022 Animal Welfare GroupIt was reported that John Waters has stepped down as Chair of the Animal Welfare Group (AWG) and Nicky Gent will take over this role. If anyone has any ideas for future topics for the group to look at, please let them know.Communications GroupThe group reports for the 70th Anniversary have now been completed and were featured in the December Bulletin.Planning is underway for Tech Month 2022. This year it is more important than ever to celebrate the role of Animal Technicians. It is hoped that it will be possible to return to the original format of asking establishments to hold events for their technicians. Branch Reps and BINGIt was reported that these two groups will merge to form one group. Further details on the group’s new name and remit will be published in due course.Equality, Diversity and Inclusion GroupThe membership survey has been sent out and data will be analysed once the survey is closed. The original closing date was the end of November, but responses are still being received. It was agreed that it would be promoted in a further e-newsletter and the Bulletin, with a new closing date of the third week in January. It is particularly important that younger, junior technicians respond and not just unit managers, as this will give a much more realistic overview. The next IAT Council meeting will take place in February 2022. This will be a virtual meeting.BOOK via www.iat.org.uk FINAL BOOKING DATE MONDAY 21st MARCH 2022 Range of conference attendance options available - full conference (three day)* - individual days* *lunch included - evening meals and entertainment (individually bookable) Once you have registered book your own accommodation - and download the Congress 2022 App for all up to date information Scientific Programme NEWS – We are delighted to announce that - The Kevin Dolan Memorial Lecture will be given by TULLIS MATSON, Chair and Trustee at Nature’s SAFE- The Andrew Blake Tribute Award winner is Rosie Payne, University of Surrey A provisional running order appears on the website (subject to change) INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE We’ve missed you – come and see us in 2022 ONLINE REGISTRATION Venue: HARROGATE North Yorkshire All enquiries to congress@iat.org.uk REMEMBER – THE DEADLINE FOR POSTER DISPLAYS IS FRIDAY 4TH FEBRUARY DON’T DELAY! Bulletin20 • January 2022 Aggressive behaviour is a problem in many laboratory animal species and can cause stress and painful injuries. It can also lead to single housing, which has a negative welfare impact on social species and animals accustomed to group living. In addition, aggression is undesirable from a scientific perspective, for example where it leads to animals being culled or removed from studies, or where pain and distress introduce variability into experimental results. It is therefore crucial to be able to detect aggressive behaviour early on, understand the causes, and take steps to minimise its occurrence. The NC3Rs is holding a workshop at IAT Congress 2022 that will cover the reasonswhy aggression may occur how this can affect animal wellbeing and science andstrategies and tips for preventing and managing aggression in mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs and macaques. Participants will be able to share their experiences of managing aggression and will receive practical recommendations and handouts with sources of further advice. If you have already registered for IAT Congress 2022, all you need to do is wait for an email from the organisers closer to the time of the event, inviting you to register for workshops. Bulletin22 • January 2022 This month, the EDI Group is focussing its “Let’s Talk” article on another protected characteristic, AgeLet’s talk about … Age and how we can be more inclusive in the workplace An employee is protected against discrimination because of age. This includes protection against unfair treatment because a job applicant or employee may be: a different age, or in a different age group to another job applicant or employee. Age discrimination is not always about a ‘young person’ being preferred over an ‘old person’ because of their age, which is a common misconception. There are many ways in which age can be discriminated against. It is important to note that there are exceptions when age is not classed as being discriminatory e.g. an under 18 year old being paid less or not being allowed to serve alcohol, etc.Age discrimination, also commonly called ageism, is one of the most common forms of unfair treatment at work, as the age gap between co-workers can be 50 years or more. According to Age UK (https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/work-learning/discrimination-rights/ageism/ageism-at-work/) age discrimination in the workplace can take the form ofl direct discriminationl indirect discrimination l harassmentl victimisation When it is not a legal requirement, age discrimination should be removed from the workplace, and it is a necessity to ensure all workplaces are inclusive resulting in a more positive working environment. It is the responsibility of employers and employees to eliminate age discrimination from the workplace, here are a few examples of discrimination in the workplace.- Training opportunities are offered to younger employees — not older ones. This can include professional training, access to continuing education and conference attendance, etc.- Being given fewer challenging assignments. This may also look like an unfair share of unpleasant or tedious assignments given to older employees.- A spoken or unspoken assumption that you are not entitled to take time off for family commitments, as your family are deemed to be ‘older’.- Derogatory remarks about age. This could be framed as ‘banter’, with others joking about your age, or retirement plans, etc. Or, it could be downright aggressive (e.g. pointed and/or cornering comments that pressure you to retire and free up the position for another professional).- Being passed over for wage increases and promotions.- Being excluded from workplace social events i.e. under 18s not being allowed to go to ‘over 18’ venues, or less mobile elders not being able to part take in vigorous activities. What can I do if I experience age discrimination? If you experience any form of discrimination due to age, consult your company’s Equality and Diversity policy. This will outline what plan of action you can take within your company to address the issue. Directly address any remarks that you may find are discriminatory against you based on age. If after addressing the issue and the situation does not improve, there will be procedures in place within your organisation to escalate the grievance.Let’s talk about ... Agewww.iat.org.ukWhat can an organisation and managers do to prevent age discrimination?- Encourage career development at all ages.- Create an age-positive culture.- Keep all policies up to date and ensure all employees are aware of these.- Ensure there is no segregation based on age.- Reduce age bias at recruitment.- Highlighting discrimination and resolving issues.- Consider flexible working patterns. - Ensure management receive EDI training. How co-workers can be more inclusiveChallenge: if you experience any ageism behaviour, please challenge this, either directly or indirectly to your manager.Educate: each one of us has a commitment to keep up with current information surrounding age discrimination and we should always strive to have the knowledge to enable us to be inclusive. Read what the current equality and diversity policies are.Inclusiveness: always think of ways of including everyone in activities that are held both in and out of the workplace.Awareness: try and spot co-workers who may become withdrawn or unusually quiet and offer a friendly ear.Support:www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/work-learning/discrimination-rights/ageism/ageism-at-workwww.acas.org.uk/acas-guide-on-age-discriminationInstitute of Animal TechnologyCOUNCILEquality and Diversity GroupIAT BULLETIN JAN22.indd 22 19/01/2022 06:11

If after addressing the issue and the situation does not improve, there will be procedures in place within your organisation to escalate the grievance.Let’s talk about ...
