HEALTHYHABITS PAYING AT TENTION TO POSITIVE BEH AVIOR CATCH YOUR CHILD BEING GOOD When adults put forth effort to do something good and it is met with silence or goes unnoticed they are disappointed What about little people Children thrive on gaining recognition from their caregivers When parents consistently practice giving their children recognition for desired behaviors they help their children grow into confident and responsible adults One way to enhance the parent child relationship is to pay attention to behaviors you want to increase An easy way to give positive attention is by praising your child when you see them behaving in neutral or acceptable ways catching them being good This will make them more likely to repeat that positive behavior in the future For example Thank you for walking by me in the store or I really enjoyed our talk today about what went on at school The fancy term for this is labeled praise Here are a few strategies to make labeled praise more effective Make sure that you are near them rather than yelling across the room your child is more likely to pay attention if you are close by Give your attention immediately after the desired behavior Be enthusiastic and genuine Be specific Praise the desired behavior Thank you for walking instead of Thank you for not running In addition to improving your relationship and increasing desired behaviors positive attention offers other benefits like reducing misbehavior and bolstering your child s self esteem Praise is an essential component of effective parenting and if used correctly is almost never too much After all have you ever felt like you get too much genuine praise Brian Olsen PhD Paying attention can also come in nonverbal forms like a brief and gentle pat on the back joining in on their play activity or a smile Nonverbal forms of praise may be helpful for older children who might be annoyed by or find labeled praise patronizing Some parents fear that they might interrupt whatever their child is doing by giving them praise However it is important to keep in mind that if you miss an opportunity at praising your child you miss the opportunity to teach him her how you would like them to behave 8 www southernidahokids com Paula Griffith MD Kelsie Hendrickson PhD Sponsored by

SPONSORED BY SPOTLIGHT Sprained Ankles I love this time of year It s basketball and ski season But this time of year can bring slippery conditions and intense basketball play This can create conditions for increased injuries particularly sprained ankles as hot showers hot packs or heat rubs Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can help reduce pain and swelling and may also speed recovery The injury occurs when one or more of the ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn causing pain swelling and difficulty walking Many people try to tough out ankle injuries and don t seek medical attention but if an ankle sprain causes more than slight pain and swelling it s important to see a clinician Without proper treatment and rehabilitation a severely injured ankle may not heal well and could lose its range of motion and stability resulting in recurrent sprains and more downtime in the future Unless your symptoms are mild or improving soon after the injury contact your clinician He or she may want to see you immediately if your pain and swelling are severe or if the ankle feels numb or won t bear weight He or she will examine the ankle and foot and may manipulate them in various ways to determine the type of sprain and the extent of injury This examination may be delayed for a few days until swelling and pain improve in the meantime continue with the RICE regimen Ankle sprain medical evaluation Immediate ankle sprain treatment The first goal is to decrease pain and swelling and protect the ligaments from further injury This usually means adopting the classic RICE regimen rest ice compression and elevation If you have severe pain and swelling rest your ankle as much as possible for the first 24 48 hours During that time immerse your foot and ankle in cold water or apply an ice pack be sure to cover the ankle with a towel to protect the skin for 15 20 minutes three to five times a day or until the swelling starts to subside If pain persists you may consider seeking medical attention for an x ray to rule out any type of fracture Source www health harvard edu pain recovering_from_an_ ankle_sprain April 19 2019 Jonathan Pittard PA C has been providing care for Twin Falls and the surrounding areas since 2009 To reduce swelling compress the ankle with an elasticized wrap such as an ACE bandage or elastic ankle sleeve When seated elevate your ankle as high as you comfortably can to the height of your hip if possible In the first 24 hours avoid anything that might increase swelling such OPEN 8AM TO 7PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK 208 736 7422 www picctf com We ve moved across from Walmart in Twin Falls Southern Idaho Kids January 2021 17
