January 19, 2024ד״פשת טבש ’ט אב תשרפ Distinctiveness of a Yid 4:23 PMDear Parents,Hashem commanded: רקב דע ותיב חתפמ שיא ואצת אל םתאו: and you, each man should not leave the entrance of his home until morning. Bnai Yisrael in Mitzrayim were sorely deficient in mitzva-observance. Chazal inform us that Bnei Yisrael worshiped הרז הדובע and abandoned the mitzva of Milah. However, there were a few areas where they distinguished themselves and in which merit they were redeemed: They didn’t change their names, language and dress, and did not slander each other. These safeguards enabled them to survive םירצמ תולג as a distinct entity and be redeemed as a nation. The Meshech Chochma notes that that during לבב תולג, the situation was reversed. Bnei Yisrael entered the exile mitzvah-observant but were lax in maintaining the םירדג to preserve their distinct identity. The pesukim in הימחנ describe how Bnei Yisrael adopted the names and language of לבב and assimilated. The Gemara in ׳ד תוכרב explains that double terminology in the possuk in םיה תריש that reads תינק וז םע רובעי דע ׳ה ךמע רובעי דע is referring to the הלואג from םירצמ and the הלואג from לבב. The juxtaposition of the two is meant to inform that Klal Yisrael should have experienced the same level of Nissim by both. However, because of Klal Yisrael’s sins, they did not merit an equally miraculous הלואג from לבב תולג. While the Gemara doesn’t specify which sins led to this, the Meshech Chochma affirms that the אטח of failing to set up םירדג to maintain their distinctiveness was the source for this less miraculous redemption.Although performing mitzvos is certainly of utmost importance, it is critical in Golus to maintain and preserve our distinctiveness as the רחבנה םע while residing among our host nation. Without this, we will lose our identity. The Gemara in Shabbos informs us that 18 decrees were enacted by Hillel and Shamai that were formulated in a manner that even Eliyahu HaNavi would not be able to nullify them. Expounds the Meshech Chochmah: even if Eliyahu HaNavi, immediately before heralding the arrival of Moshiach, would attempt to nullify these decrees, we would not listen to him, so vital are these protective measures. This he explains, can be understood by the possuk we opened with: “Do not leave the entrance of your homes until morning”: Your home represents the domain which separates a Yid from the םלועה תומוא – the distinctiveness of a Yid. This remains absolute until morning, the daybreak of the final redemption.תבש טוג!
