Inside her home where she lived withher parents, and nine siblings, a new clock radiograced every room. But at one of those talent shows a producerapproached Angel with an opportunity to auditionfor a new girl group he was putting together, andthough joining a group wasn’t something she wasentirely interested in, something about the debutsong they’d chosen for the group had grabbed herattention. Done with her shift where she worked as aTherapist Aid at a Bronx Developmental Center,Angel sprinted across town, breathless anddetermined to make the audition. Standing in the doorway overlooking the roomfilled with Tall glamorous women, each dressed insexy skirts and dresses, with towering heels andhuge hair doused in Aqua Net, Angel showed up infaded jeans and a baggy sweatshirt that hung pasther shoulder. They asked for her music, but Angel had nothingprepared. The room buzzed with laughter and snidewhispers, the weight of the situation attempting to pressdown even harder, when in that moment, every ounce ofdoubt and insecurity that threatened to crush her, waspushed aside as she launched into an imprompturendition of Whitney Houston’s Saving All My Love forYou. The room fell silent, and all heads turned towardAngel, as her voice draped the room with her raw andundeniable talent. The producers looked on, impressedno doubt, but despite her stunning performance, it justwasn’t what they were looking for. The producers complimented and thanked her for hertime, telling her to leave her name and number in casesomething else comes up. They turned their attentionback to the other girls, and the room resumed its originalenergy. Traces of laughter and dismissive glancescontinued to linger.T The producers, shaking their heads exchangedhesitant glances before one of them finally replied,“Something lighter, and fun.” And without wastinganother second, Angel dove immediately into anotherrendition, this time of the song Sweetheart by RainyDavis. The sultry, upbeat track filled the room, and thetransformation was amazing. This time, the room didn’tjust quiet down, it froze in awe. Angel’s voice capturedthe song with perfection, and her versatility and abilityto shift effortlessly from power ballad to light, playfulpop, was nothing short of mesmerizing. The audition ended right there and then, and theproducers didn’t need to hear any more, as it becamecrystal clear that Angel wasn’t just the lead singer theysought for The Cover Girl, but also the sound! 10THE RIPPLE EFFECT: WHY LOVE AND KINDNESS MATTERove and kindness are not just fleeting emotions; they are powerful forces that shape ourworld. They are the threads that weave together the fabric of our communities, fosteringempathy, compassion, and a sense of belonging. The Science of Kindness: Research consistently demonstrates the profound impact of kindness on our well-being. Acts ofkindness, whether large or small, trigger the release of endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones thatpromote happiness and reduce stress. These acts not only benefit the recipient but also have asignificant positive impact on the giver. Furthermore, kindness is contagious. When we witness acts of kindness, it inspires us to be kinderourselves. This creates a ripple effect, spreading positivity throughout our social circles and beyond.Love in Action: Love, in its purest form, is an unconditional acceptance and appreciation for ourselves and others.6 Itis about fostering deep connections, showing compassion, and offering support during both joyful andchallenging times.Love manifests in countless ways:Acts of service: Helping a neighbor with groceries, volunteering at a local shelter, orsimply lending an ear to a friend in need.Words of affirmation: Offering encouragement, expressing gratitude, and sharingwords of love and appreciation.Quality time: Spending meaningful time with loved ones, engaging in sharedexperiences, and creating lasting memories.Gifts: Giving thoughtful gifts that show you care and understand the recipient'sinterests and needs.Physical touch: A warm hug, a gentle pat on the back, or holding hands can conveydeep affection and support.Cultivating a Culture of Kindness:Building a kinder world starts with ourselves. We can cultivate a culture of kindness by:Practicing self-compassion: Treating ourselves with the same kindness andunderstanding that we offer to others.Mindful awareness: Paying attention to our thoughts and actions, and choosingkindness in our interactions.Expressing gratitude: Acknowledging and appreciating the good in our lives and thekindness of others.Forgiving ourselves and others: Letting go of resentment and anger, and choosingto move forward with compassion.Leading by example: Demonstrating kindness in our daily lives and inspiring othersto do the same. Love and kindness are not luxuries; they are essential for our individual and collectivewell-being. By embracing these values and spreading them throughout ourcommunities, we can create a more compassionate, just, and fulfilling world for all.Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice.J A N - F E B 2 0 2 5 | N Ú M E R O 3Written by Alida Hernandez

SPANGLISH ENTERTAINMENT MAGAZINE One such story includes Eliot Annable, a 20-year-old radio operator serving with the Army’s 106thInfantry Division. Just days after arriving at thewestern front, Annable found himself under Germanartillery barrages on. Dec. 16, 1944. He recalled theassault in his oral history, describing the intensity as“almost enough to knock you on the floor.” The following five days became the most harrowingdays of Annable’s military service. While on acommunications mission, he became stranded behindenemy lines and spent nearly a week evading theenemy in the Ardennes Forest without food, shelter orappropriate winter clothing. After traveling more than30 miles, he eventually safely rejoined the remnantsof his unit. Back home, Annable’s parents were gripped byuncertainty. On Dec. 31, 1944, his father wrote a letterexpressing the family’s anguish and love for theirson, regardless of what happened. The moving letter, coupled with Annable’s oral history, provides anintimate view into one soldier’s Battle of the Bulgeexperience. Another featured veteran in the exhibit, Guy MartinStephens, also served with the 106th InfantryDivision. Unlike Annable, Stephens was captured bythe Germans during battle. In his oral history, herecounted the surreal feeling of combat, therelentless hunger he endured as a prisoner of warand the lingering effects of his time in captivity. “It’s hard,” Stephens said. “It’s something you can’tever … your mind is just like a video, or camcorder, Iguess. You put it in there. You get busy and getmarried. You get home, and you get an education, andget a job, and raise your family and everything likethat. You can kind of gloss it over or try to push itback, but it’s always there, you know?” Veterans who served during the 20th or 21stcenturies are invited to establish a collection, including interviews (video or audio), letters andoriginal photographs, even if they did not seecombat. Families can also submit collectionsposthumously to honor their loved ones.
