President’s CornerBY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENTLH ROUNDUP 7Happy New Year! There is much to be excited about in the coming year for our Region. For starters, our club has expanded to over 540 primary members. This does not count our co-members… and by the way, be sure and register a co-member for your PCA membership. It is free and a way to get more people involved in our club. The activity plans for the year are coming together fast with drives every month, monthly membership meetings and some special events. In spite of the scarcity of available track time, we have procured two track day dates for the year at Harris Hill Raceway, one in May and one in October. Look for those on club registration as they will fill up fast. In addition, our neighboring regions have invited us to join in a track DE program at Circuit of the Americas Track in Austin in February. Details are at clubregistration, Austin. We are working on two different venues for autocross sites and we should have some solid information soon.We also have a new and exciting plan for Fiesta Challenge, our biggest event of the year. We will have a concours, rally, silent auction at the Porsche Center and also a new event the following day…our first annual Fiesta Challenge Golf Tournament. We have procured one of the most beautiful courses in San Antonio, The Quarry, for this event. It will be a scramble format so you can bring your favorite golfers with you to compete in this fun event which along with the other Fiesta Challenge events will benefit local charities. More information will be forthcoming on all of these programs soon.In February, our club will celebrate a milestone for one of our members, R. J. Wilmoth, who will complete 50 years of PCA membership and action. R.J. is one of our most celebrated members, having served not only as a regional officer and chair, but as PCA Club Historian for the past 10 years. R.J. and partner Linda received special recognition from PCA at last year’s Parade for their outstanding work in organizing and creating a functioning exhibit of PCA history. R.J. was also recognized by our region at our Christmas Party with a special award for Outstanding Service for 50 years of PCA support. As you can see from this impressive list of activities, there is no reason for you not to be involved in our club. Driving or social events abound, just check our schedule on the website or right here in the Roundup. I look forward to seeing you there! Watch for information on the 1st Annual LHR Golf Tournament on April 10 at the Quarry Golf Club.

ZONE 5 NOTESZONE 5 NOTESCHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP Happy New Year! Hope you are able to get out and enjoy your Porsche this winter! We are very fortunate in Zone 5 that we don’t have to bundle up our cars and store them over the winter until spring arrives and the roads are cleared of ice and snow.Consequently, we have many activities going on this time of year - tours, autocrosses, track days, and socials. In addition to the many regional events, PCA National has a lot going on as well. Treffen at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs will be the closest Treffen to Zone 5 for awhile. Registration opens on Feb 16, and more details can be found at treffen.pca.org. Parade in the Poconos is also coming up quickly with registration opening 2 Feb. The Kalahari hotel in the Poconos is a family friendly hotel and it looks to be a very fun parade. As I mentioned in a previous note, I am amazed at how much content is available on the PCA website. Book reviews, tech tips, an updated mart, and much more. Bi-weekly video spotlights and tons of content on the PCA You-tube channel. Take some time to check it out- you will be impressed with what has been happening online! All these events and content have translated to PCA growth, with 7% annual growth, breaking another record for PCA with 15,000 new members in 2021. You probably see some of that in your regions with lots of new faces. Take the time to welcome them and make them feel at home.I hope you have a great 2022, and I look forward to seeing your out in your region!Chuck Bush Zone 5 Rep10 LH ROUNDUP
SOCIALLY SPEAKINGSOCIALLY SPEAKING BY DONNA CLEMENTAutocross – Austin We are happy to announce our first Autocross event of 2022. This event will take place at the same location, H.E.B. Center in Cedar Park, on Saturday, March 12, 2022. Since the Fall event, we have acquired brand new, state of the art timing equipment. This new equipment is wireless, which allows us much more flexibility with placement of timing, start and finish lines. The “eyes” are easy to align and not temperamental like our old equipment was, which means that we should be able to have more runs for everyone. (We are shooting for 8 runs per driver.) It also has a big, beautiful display which will be placed at the end of the stop box so you will be able to see your finish time immediately after finishing your run.Although we really enjoyed the crossovers at the last event, many people got confused (yes, that includes your event chair), so the course is more straightforward for this event. That does not mean we have not thrown in a few challenging turns but it does mean that we are putting in a lot of effort to improve the visibility of the course with better and more intuitive cone placement.Registration is now open at https://clubregistration.net/events/signUp.cfm/event/12088 and the registration fee is $40 for PCA members, $50 for non-PCA individuals. From: Alan NeimanLH ROUNDUP 11Hey, everyone! If we haven’t met, my name is Donna Clement. Shelley Matthews and I have formed a Longhorn social committee and we will be working together as co-chairs. The Longhorn Club is not just about the cars, it’s also about the people. Although we all love the cars and the drives, it doesn’t always give us the best opportunity to get to know each other, especially the co-members. We have some fun events planned and need your input and your help. We are recruiting volunteers for the committee events. We hope you will join us in making the committee and the activities a huge success. Currently the list of events we are planning are the following with dates and location to be determined:Wine Tasting - Spring Ladies Luncheon – Summer Annual Club Picnic – Fall Christmas Party – December 10 – The Club at Sonterra If you want to volunteer, have suggestions or any ideas, please send an email to dclement@gvtc.com. We are excited and ready to get planning. We will have our first meeting in February.
MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELLNote: This article is re-run from January 2015January is a dull month as we have just passed the holidays, the weather is normally cold and sometimes wet and there are no driving events. So don’t just sit there, use the time to get your car ready for spring and the upcoming autocross and track event season.Things you can be doing for your Porsche to make it better this year. First a good cleaning is always nice, inside and out. See what goodies have found new homes under the seats. It is also a great time to jack the car, remove the wheels and clean and inspect shocks, brake lines and brakes themselves. If it is been several years since you last checked the brake pads, now is the time rather than wait for the sound of worn pads. Take a good look at the rotors for signs of any cracks or excessive wear. You can also examine the back side of your tires for cracks etc., easier while they are off the car. With the front passenger side tire off, you can look in the forward part of the wheel well on air cooled cars and clean the crud from around the oil cooler, your engine will appreciate that on warmer days to come. While you have the rear tires off check the exhaust system and, for older air cooled cars, take a good look at the oil tank and its hoses. I would guess you will find mud build up around them that should be cleaned off. It will make it easier to check for leaky hoses and fittings. Newer cars are not out of the woods as there is plenty to look at and clean. Coolant lines should be examined for leaks and cracks which will lead to leaks. Likewise while you are at it cleaning debris that has built up around the radiators is a great idea and will also allow you to check the radiators themselves for any damage. Now, when was the last time you had your brakes flushed and new fluid put in? Porsche recommends this be done every two years and if you track your car, more frequently than that. Likewise, if you have one of the earlier water cooled cars flushing the coolant system never hurts. Your beloved Porsche is now clean, fluids have been serviced, brakes are good and all service requirements are up to date. GREAT. Now how are your tires (and I don’t mean round and with some tread)? How old are they and how is the tread wear, even? While experts say tire safe service life is five years, tires age and after about three years they lose grip and get noisy, so you might think about new ones if you want to get serious about autox etc this year. While I’m helping you spend your money on your treasure, it probably is time for a good alignment. Our roads are bumpy and have their share, or more, of potholes and each one gently “adjusts” your alignment. A good alignment with maybe a little more negative camber up front will make the car handle better all the time and track truer in windy conditions on the highway. Wow, lots to do and only a month and a half until our first autocross ...... better get busy. Drive safe and with a smile.12 LH ROUNDUP
Meet the Longhorn - Mike & Donna ClementTell us a bit about yourself/family/background? We are both native Texans and transplants from North Texas. We have a 41-year son, John that is as passionate about Porsches as his father and we are looking forward to someday become doting grandparents. We miss our sweet Golden Retriever, Leo and have since been adopted by Mojo, the cat diva. Mike grew up in Dallas and attended North Texas State University. I grew up in the small Northeast Texas town of Honey Grove and moved to Dallas soon after HS. I went to work in the accounting field where I worked until we moved to San Antonio in the early 90s. The move was precipitated by Mike’s business in the consumer electronics industry, but we fell in love with South Texas and the Hill Country. We decided to make it our permanent home after Mike retired in 2011. Once in San Antonio, I studied real estate at Trinity University and built a long successful career in the industry that kept me very busy. Mike joined me as a partner after retiring from the electronics business and we both retired from real estate in 2021. What year did you join PCA? 2013 What other regions have you belonged to? None What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? 1978 924 Turbo 2002 Boxster S 2007 Cayman S Currently a 2007 Carrera S What’s your favorite Porsche memory? I guess it would be when we attended our first Boxstoberfest in Fredericksburg. We decided to do the drive with the fast drive group through Leakey that included a lot of sharp curves and beautiful views of the Hill Country. It was about a 6-hour drive including stopping for lunch. It was a very fast, intense drive with lots of gripping arm rests and steering wheel thru some of the sharpest curves resulting in a few sore muscles the next day. But we loved it! It was a lot of fun, and we met a lot of nice people from other regions. We have continued to go to the event each year and have already booked the hotel for 2022. If you haven’t been, you are missing out on a very fun weekend. What LHR events do you enjoy most? Mike loves just driving the Porsche and enjoys discussing cars with the other members. I like getting to explore the Hill Country, making new friends, and discovering new places to eat and visit. Our favorite event is the Annual Boxstoberfest in Fredericksburg each year. It is always a fun weekend getaway. What’s your favorite Porsche? The current Carrera S What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/participate in? Mike loves golf, although that activity has been limited the last couple of years due to back issues. He loves anything to do with cars and is an avid History Channel buff. We are both “foodies” and enjoy going out to restaurants. We also love going to the beach and we look forward to traveling and are planning a river cruise as soon as possible, considering today’s world. I am discovering that I enjoy just relaxing, reading, gardening and the freedom retirement brings. I recently joined the Longhorn Social Committee to meet more ladies in the Club and help plan fun social events!LH ROUNDUP 13

Our sponsors!!Drive to Leakey Article by Bill DorseyWhen the KSAT weather guy said there was a chance of freez-ing in the Hill Country the night before our Twisted Sisters Drive, we thought another route change might be needed. We had changed the route two weeks prior already due to the proposed I-10/46 construction and closure (which of course did not actu-ally happen). Canceling a drive was not how we wanted to start the 2022 Longhorn PCA Drive season. But as always, you can’t put all your trust in the San Antonio weather team or TXDOT construction.Saturday morning, 33 gleamingly clean cars gathered in the CVS parking lot and it was apparent the roads would be clear of ice and excess motorcycles. I’d like to personally thank Brian Lichy for helping me set up the drive and leading the second group, Michael Sorbera for his help, and Chuck Bush for his willingness to be the caboose in a beautiful GT3. Thank you Michael for suggesting The Inn of the Hills for lunch. It did not disappoint. Another drive in the books and friendships bonded with every mile. What goes into planning a drive?Article by Michael SorberaI’ve been with the Longhorn PCA club for over 20 years and THE MOST FUN thing for me is planning a good tour and leading it! I love seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces! It takes a LOT of planning for everyone to be able to enjoy themselves and have a safe experience. What actually goes into planning a tour? First step is for someone to come up with a proposed drive. Then they contact the tour chair and pitch their idea. Then they work with the club leadership to get an approval and date for the tour. Once approved, the tour master submits the general information about the event to the insurance chair. Not much information is needed, just the event start address and end address, date, and a short description of the tour. The insurance chair then submits that information to PCA and receives an insurance certificate in a few days. An event can’t happen without an insurance certificate from PCA.Next the tour master sends information to the tour chair so the event can be added to the clubregistration.net website. There is quite a bit of information needed to post the event. A few items that are needed:• Will there be a cost for the drive?• Will there be a limit to the number of occupants in a car?• Will there be a limit on the total number of cars?• Will they need to pre-pay for a meal? After making the event on clubregistration.net, general information about the event needs to be sent to the Webmaster and News Editor. An event needs to be created in the Longhorn Region Facebook group. The link to the clubregistration.net site needs to be included in the event. Now the fun part, detailed planning! Working with Google Maps/paper maps plan a detailed turn-by-turn route. Be sure to include well-timed restroom breaks and consider whether they have enough facilities for a group of 40 people to be in/out in 15 mins.Once you have it all planned you, need to pre-drive the route. It’s best to drive it 2 weeks prior to the actual tour date. There are always last- minute changes to construction zones, bridges get washed out, etc.If your route includes a restaurant stop:• Go there and sample the food if you’ve never been there before.• Talk to the manager about a large group.• Is there a room big enough?• We prefer to not have to pay extra for the room.• We prefer to have each person pay their own way on separate tickets.• Will we need to have the members pre-pay?Once you’ve done the pre-drive and have the 24 LH ROUNDUP
route finalized you need to prepare a turn by turn, very detailed map with distances. Whatever program you use to build it, it has to be saved as a PDF. Post/send the PDF to the:• Webmaster – to go on the website• Newsletter Editor – to email blast it to the entire club• Facebook EventWeather is a big factor! We don't want to be out there in unsafe conditions. Light rain, or some scattered showers are fine, but if it's going to be a gully washer all day, then time to cancel. Keep in mind that even if the day of the drive is clear, if it's been raining heavily in the Hill Country the evening before, good chance some low water crossings may be impassable. It’s easy to send a cancellation email to all the participants, if needed.About two days prior to the event, check the weather outlook and close the event for registration in clubregistration.net.Ensure the radios will be delivered to the event. Day of event:• Get there early• Bring plenty of the release forms and some minor forms also• Bring print outs of the route for everyone - phones may be unreliable in the Hill Country• Designate an Observer• Pass out the radiosThree radios per run group - lead car/middle/last• Usual times are: 0800 - 0830 arrive and greet 0845 drivers meeting 0900 group leavesIf multiple groups, keep them about 15 minutes apart• At drivers meeting have each group leader introduced• Determine who the middle and last cars are for each group. Last car should be a well-trained tour master.• Middle car primary duties are to relay messages from last car to leader• Last car big responsibility! Ready to stop and assist cars.• Ensure that everyone has their group leader’s cell number• Ensure that the leader/middle/last car knows each other’s cell numbers• Ensure all leaders have the address/phone # of the restaurant • Ensure an accurate count of cars and bodies for each groupSign up and waiver sheets:• All participants, drivers, passengers, 18 and over must sign the PCA adult waiver form. Make sure they print legibly and sign next to it• Anyone that is under 18 MUST have BOTH parents/guardians sign the “FOR MINORS IN RESTRICTED AREAS, DRIVING OR RIDING” LH ROUNDUP 25
form. This may be completed so that it is good for the entire season. Fill in the “location” blank with “ALL PCA EVENTS” and the “dates” blank with “ALL DATES.” The original should be handed in at the first event, and a copy of the document handed in at each subsequent event.• Keep all signed forms, and make sure the tour chair gets them at the end• Tour chair will get all the signed forms to the club secretary where they will be kept for at least 94 monthsAt the end of the event:• Ensure that an accurate count of people/cars each group• Keep in mind that members are free to leave the tour at any time• Gather all the radiosAfter the event, the next day is preferred:• Tour master enters the Post Event Report at the PCA.ORG website• Someone that was the designated observer enters the Observer Report at the PCA.ORG website• Radios need to be handed back to the clubIf you think you’d like to become a tour master, give Michael Sorbera a call!PCA hosts over 3,500 events, activities, and programs every yearAs a member of PCA, you're invited to show off your prized possession to people who can appreciate it while attending a widearray of PCA-sponsored events. Choose Carefully, Part 1Article by Rob Turner, Maverick memberOne of my favorite things to do on the web is to go into a car company’s web site, head straight to their configurator and build something. Sometimes it will be a stripper, just the basic car to see how cheap I can build it. And more times than not, I go all in adding every option to see how far I can take it to the other extreme. I try different colors, different interiors, different wheels and I spare no expense on the performance options. If you are going to build something, you may as well go big. Right?I love me some Porsches! Owned twelve of ‘em (and counting). But you know what? I’ve never bought a new one. The Turner master plan says I get to do that at some point in my short life on this revolving globe. Thinking back to the Brand Loyalty series I wrote a couple of month back, you know I’ve got to get my boys out of college, propped up and on their own. Could take years. It’s funny, I even remind them from time to time (like weekly), that they’re holding me back. I am joking here, but just barely. Point is, I love the Porsche configurator. I build cars on it all the time, like maybe 2-3 times per month. OK, maybe 3-4 times per month. But that’s all I’m admitting here. I build Carreras (mostly Turbos and GT3s), Boxsters, Caymans (especially Caymans; love ‘em), Cayennes (just in case we end up needing a new one), Macans (because they are awesome), Panameras (have you read my action-adventure novels? They factor somewhat in the story line), and 918s (cause they are stupid crazy and it’s fun to see if you can configure one to $1,000,000—yes with reversed pinky held to mouth, Dr. Evil style). I will build one, giggle and say to my wife, “Hey I built a new Porsche, wanna see it?” She’ll glance over at me, with a sideways look, glasses lowered to her nose, and ask if I went all in this time or not. No I will proudly exclaim that I built an inexpensive Cayenne - for her. Does she want to see it? Then she’ll ask if it is like the other dozen I have “built” for her lately and not getting her sarcasm, I’ll say this one is different. (Yeah, it’s red.) Sometimes she looks, sometimes she doesn’t and she reminds me (for like the thousandth time) that we’re not doing anything before the aforementioned boys are out of school, cars paid off, bills paid off, ETC. Oh yeah—heard that one before. So then, what the heck, I’ll reconfigure the car as a Cayenne Turbo S with every option under the sun. $180K! Yeah, that’ll show her!The mouse hovers over the “get a quote from your dealer” button and as usual, I do not press it. But man, I wish I could. I know that day will come, that perfect moment when I will be able to press that button and talk to the dealer, to build my dream Porsche. I can feel it coming in a three-to-four-year-off kinda way. See, I have infinite patience when it comes to waiting for my ultimate car. I’ve got to, I only get one shot. And on that exhaust note, see you all next time. RL Turner is the author of The Driver, a series of action adventure novels, available in both print and ebook on Amazon (more info at www.thedriver-series.com). Having owned a dozen Porsches and driven hundreds of laps on racetracks throughout the southwest, author Turner knows a few things about going fast in a Porsche and then fixing them when he breaks something. PCA Escape and Treffen North AmericaPCA EscapeIt started in February 2004 when PCA President Tom Bobbitt met with the zone representatives. A survey of PCA members had shown an interest in having a national event to counterbalance the annual Porsche Parade. It had to be shorter, some distance from Parade and with little emphasis on competition. Over the six months following, the guidelines for the event were dened. It should be held in an area that would be attractive to visit and would not conict with Parade. The PCA Zone Representatives would oversee the event. It would be called a “PCA Escape.”The concept was simple, Two or three days of tours, a non-judged car show, and a nal banquet. The local region would provide the tour routes, tour leaders and volunteers. In 2012 Doug Pierce, former Zone 10 representative, took on the new position of PCA Escape Coordi-nator to assist the regions in Escape planning.Escape was held in the fall over eleven years taking place in nine states and one Canadian province. The locations and event local chairpersons are listed below.A HistoryRJ Wilmoth, PCA National HistorianStory contributor, David O’NealPhotos, PCA archives or notedPCA - Doug PierceEditor’s Note: This article highlights the history of Treffens. Treffen North AmericaIn 2014 the Executive Council (EC) decided to upgrade the PCA Escape events that had been overseen and organized by the PCA Zone Reps since 2005.The plan was to have the National PCA staff take over the event from the Zone Reps and Regions. This would add the ability to hold events in de-sirable areas of the country where there wasn’t a PCA region that was capable of staging such a large event or wanted to take on the nancial risk. A few of the previous PCA Escapes had lost money. It had also been noted that there was a lot of “re-inventing the wheel” with different regions hosting the event each year. Consisten-cy was also a goal. The National ofce staff had taken control of the PCA Parade in 2010 for the same reasons. The National staff had the exper-tise in dealing with resorts, contracts, insurance, and the many things, large and small, required to plan and stage large events. At the 2014 Zone 12 meeting two members of the EC, Tom Gorsuch, and Manny Alban, dis-cussed the possibility of upgrading PCA Escape with David O’Neal. Dave was the Zone 12 repre-sentative at the time, and the EC was aware that both he and his wife Ginny were in the Conven-tion and event planning business. Dave turned over his Zone 12 duties to Dave Herndon and began working on the “New PCA Escape”. He re-imagined the event and even the name. His plan was to make the event more like the European Treffens and make it a “Four-star” experience. The plan was presented to the EC at the Febru-ary 2015 Winter Board meeting. Dave wanted to rebrand the event to clearly establish it as a new product. The name Treffen North America was chosen. The Treffen name goes back to 1958 for PCA.LH ROUNDUP 31
Another big change was holding two Treffens a year. Dave designed the logo, media plan and website. Richard Baron Design did the nal graphics work. The site selection process, and responsibilities for both the National Treffen staff and the local regions were dened. The Zone Representatives still had a role to play by recommending destina-tions, validating region qualications, and ap-pointing a local coordinator. Part of the plan was to divide the country into nine geographical areas and hold Treffens and Parades in different parts of the country. This would make at least one of the events each year within a reasonable driving distance for most members.Dave and Ginny worked with Kristy Heath at Con-ference Direct for help with site selections and DMC’s (destination management companies) in the local areas for places to visit and things to do that aren’t necessarily car related. Local PCA regions provide the driving tours and the many volunteers needed to make it all hap-pen.The rst event was held at the Resort at Squaw Creek near Lake Tahoe in the fall of 2016. The local PCA region, Sierra Nevada, provided the driving tours and volunteers. Craig Kugler was the region president and was so helpful to the O’Neal’s that he was asked to help as the Treffen Regional Liaison for the next few events. The O’Neal’s stepped down and Harry Season became the Treffen North America Chair in the spring of 2018. Harry has been the Director of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta since 1988. Future events can be found on the Treffen North America web page. https://treffen.pca.org/ The spring 2020 event in Colorado Springs was can-celed due to COVID-19 and rescheduled for spring 2022..32 LH ROUNDUP
