Golf School District 67 9401 Waukegan Rd Morton Grove IL 60053 Ph 847 966 8200 Timeless teaching in a changing world Chalkboard Golf School District 67 Newsletter In this issue Welcome Back Kindergarten Registration Pre K State Report Card PARCC Results 5essentials Survey PTA Strategic Plan School Board Subscribe Kindergarten Registration is scheduled for January 26 and 28 from 4 to 7PM Parents should come to Hynes Elementary to enroll children who plan to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2016 Information will be provided about the importance of the kindergarten experience what to expect and other details for the coming year We look forward to meeting with each of the families that will join our kindergarten in the fall Vol 1 I hope that you and your family had a Pre K Program Focus Areas restful and enjoyable winter break The mid point of the school year is already upon us and we continue to share district news and activities and teaching and learning The monthly electronic Chalkboard provides an opportunity to highlight the wonderful programs and activities that our students experience January is the start of a new year and what better time to showcase our preschool program the beginning of our children s educational journey Preschool education provides numerous opportunities for three and four year olds to gain basic knowledge through exploration and play under the guidance of helpful and caring teachers Acquiring social skills is one important benefit for children They learn how to wait for turns how to follow instructions and how to cooperate with others The activities in preschool are designed so that children learn the basics while having fun with their peers Creativity and motor skills are encouraged through art activities designed by the teacher Golf School District 67 offers a tuitionbased blended half day program for 3 and 4 year old children who reside in District 67 Information about our program is included in this edition of the Chalkboard Language and Literacy Social and Interpersonal Skills Self Help Skills Character Education Approaches to Learning Music and the Arts Learning to Learn Wellness and Healthy Living Mathematics and Science Independence January 4 School Resumes Welcome Back 12 PTA Meeting 18 No school Martin Luther King Birthday 21 School Board Meeting 26 Kindergarten Registration 4 7pm 28 Kindergarten Registration 4 7pm 29 International Celebration of Cultures Night February 23 Pre kindergarten Registration I wish all of our families and staff members a very Happy 2016 Dr Beth Flores Superintendent A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education

2 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1 Golf School District 67 s Pre K program is an important part of our district s learning sequence Our Pre K program is modeled on the Creative Curriculum for Preschool and our classrooms provide opportunities for children to participate in activities and explore materials at their own developmental levels The curriculum offers daily opportunities to individualize instruction to meet the needs of every learner with a particular focus on English language development Pre K classrooms are organized with learning centers that encourage different types of play dramatic play toy art easel discovery and science kitchen storybook and a noodle table Weekly and bimonthly themes are a springboard for many of the activities in our Pre K classrooms I feel the preschool students benefit greatly from being in our program By being part of a class they work on socialization taking turns and communicating each day I truly believe our program gives the students a taste of what is expected as they transition to kindergarten Our curriculum focuses on activities that foster small motor development and pre Noel Sucherman Teacher Assistant writing skills using building blocks manipulating play dough cutting and coloring We have a daily plan that gives students a sense of routine and confidence in knowing what comes next during each day Group time engages the students through stories songs and discussions Children learn to verbalize their ideas use self control and enhance their ability to focus Our classroom is filled with printed words that allow children to recognize and write their names Math concepts are a natural part of each day as we count the number of children the days of the week cups at Our students learn how to develop their curiosity share snack time and cars on the carpet toys work cooperatively and Children develop personal competency consider the feelings of others and self help skills by taking off putting Preschool provides a strong educational and social on coats mastering using the toilet foundation that helps to pushing in chairs throwing scraps into support our students success in their future education the recycling bin and putting toys Aviva Sadkin Teacher away Pre K students using classroom technology A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 2

3 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1 School Report Cards The Illinois State Department of Education completed the release of the annual School Report Cards for districts from across the state The full report card can be viewed here School Report Card On the new PARCC exam Golf School District 67 students exceeded the performance of students from across the state and in the nearby school districts Congratulations to our students and teachers for their achievements on this rigorous exam Golf School District 67 will participate in the Illinois 5essentials Survey beginning in January 2016 This is the fourth statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions The survey provides a unique opportunity for teachers students and parents to have a voice in improving their schools The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five essentials critical for school success Effective Leaders Collaborative Teachers Involved Families Supportive Environment Ambitious Instruction Golf School District 67 has previously participated in the statewide 5Essentials Survey and is opting to From January 11 through March 11 teachers administer the survey to teachers students and students and parents will be asked to complete a parents again this year to continue tracking and 20 minute research based survey to help identify informing progress The information from the strengths and weaknesses in their school s learning survey will be used as part of our ongoing environment The results from this survey serve as improvement planning an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide survey A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 3

4 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1 PTA Events 1 12 Regular meeting at Golf MS 7PM On Friday January 29 Golf School District 67 families will come together at Golf Middle School to celebrate the rich diversity reflected in our school community 1 29 International Celebration of Cultures 6 9PM Golf 67 student families reflect many different cultures and speak more than 30 different languages in their homes So come join us at this festive event for food fun and wonderful performances by our students and community Got Talent The Golf 67 Has Talent show will hold auditions this month Check the district website in the next 1 2 weeks for details The show will be at Golf Middle School on Friday March 4 Parents and Community groups are needed to sponsor a table or booth Please contact Kristina Otte at kristinaotte1 gmail com for more A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 4
