Greeting Message from the President CEO George J S Choe Year 2022 is a special year for our organization having received a transformative grant of 5 25 million from the Montgomery County Recovery Office towards the Jaisohn Community Wellness Plaza proposal Once this 7 million dollar project is realized we will create a onestop shop wellness space for the Asian American AA community where it will become the central hub of information and services connecting the county and service providers with the AA community members We are truly grateful and thrilled about the positive impact this project will bring to our future Aside from this exciting investment news we are pleased to share that we continue to support our underserved communities with COVID 19 vaccine clinics particularly those who have difficulties with the vaccine access due to language cultural religious and or transportation barriers To continue to combat the mental health crisis we hosted a mental health workshop series for youth and parents based on their requested topics In addition we launched the New American Majority PA NAM PA initiative with Senator Art Haywood and Rev Luis Cortes of Esperanza to identify and develop future BIPOC community leaders which will also play an important role in improving racial relations in our community Overall this has been the year of transformation for the Philip Jaisohn organization for playing a leadership role in the Asian American community in healthcare preventive care advocacy and leadership development To support this changemaker role we continue to make transitions and develop our staff board memberships and partnerships I want to thank all our supporters and partners in 2022 as I look forward to what lies ahead in the near future Sincerely George J S Choe President CEO 2 Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation
Letter from the Chairman of the Board Brian Lee This was a great year for PJMF highlighted by the award of a 5 25 million grant by the MontCo ARPA Grant in August 2022 This was a recognition of the persistent and tireless effort of CEO George Choe and his team who had provided critically needed health services to various local communities during the COVID 19 pandemic period Our team demonstrated leadership by providing many vaccine programs to diverse communities of the greater Philadelphia area in collaboration with volunteers from multiple organizations We also delivered masks to Philadelphia sanitary workers when the mask supply was extremely restricted With this grant we will be able to expand our health service and serve larger communities I would like to congratulate our leadership team for achieving this great milestone We will continue on our mission to promote the ideals and passion of Dr Jaisohn a true hero of all Korean Americans as well as all other immigrants of this country We thank you for your dedication volunteer work financial support and encouragement during this exciting time Together we will make a giant leap to become an exemplary community services organization and produce community leaders of the next generation the initiatives our founding board members of PJMF have dreamed of and sacrificed for Annual Report 2022 3

Medical Center At Jaisohn Medical Center our commitment extends beyond providing medical relief services in 2022 we took strides to enhance community health through preventative screenings and medical literacy initiatives In July we partnered with the Jefferson Health Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and Independence Blue Cross Foundation to conduct mammogram screenings for both insured and uninsured individuals and later in the month organized group retina eye exams for patients and local residents with language support In August we hosted the Prevention of Heart Disease seminar with Jefferson Community Health tailored for senior citizens This lecture was presented by Jean Paik RN and sought to educate vulnerable elders on the maintenance of their health Through these group preventative care workshops we successfully assisted the limited English proficient LEP community in gaining valuable insights into various health related topics Annual Report 2022 5
Home Health Care In addition to providing continuing care for at home patients Jaisohn Home Health Care engaged in professional internships by welcoming several students to our facility Executive Director Yisun Cho hosted Eugene Hong as Jaisohn s new occupational therapist intern and CRNP Koungim Joung guided Gwynedd Mercy University nursing student Aumbreen Khokhar through real world medical experiences including supervised home visits Throughout the year the Foundation actively sought to introduce new individuals to the organization providing them with valuable insights into healthcare and fostering a deeper appreciation for the field in order to build a pipeline of bilingual and bicultural healthcare workforce Mental Health In 2022 Jaisohn Center launched the Happy Call Program after observing the adverse impact of the pandemic on seniors mental health with continued social isolation and health related anxieties contributing to heightened levels of loneliness and depression The goal of the Happy Call Program was to establish consistent communication with seniors offering a direct line for emotional support and assistance with prac tical needs With more than 3 500 conversations we helped seniors in navigating the complexities of the ongoing health crisis Building on this foundation Jaisohn Center further aided seniors facing language and technology barriers in accessing vaccination clinics The program seamlessly evolved into a text message communication system to sustain these essential services 6 Philip Jaisohn Memorial FoundationAnnual Report 2021 2022
Wellness Center Following the grand opening of the Jaisohn Wellness Center at the Advanced Living Communities in Lansdale PA the center has been bustling with a variety of activities Currently Jaisohn Wellness Center offers singing English as a Second Language ESL mindfulness and line dance classes alongside Jaisohn WELLNESS Walk for physical and mental health field trips and special lectures related to health and well being In August 2022 Jaisohn Center initiated small group classes to provide seniors with essential training on basic cell phone usage aiming to enhance their understanding of current technology On December 7 2022 we marked the first anniversary of Jaisohn Wellness Center commemorated with performances by Jaisohn LIFE Academy members Staff Changes In November 2022 we celebrated the retirement of Donna Chun RN We thank her for all of the work she has put into Jaisohn Center during the past 23 years and wish her all the best Annual Report 2022 7
ADVOCACY AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ARPA Grant In 2022 Montgomery County solicited proposals for the American Rescue Plan Act ARPA Grant funding a federal COVID 19 relief initiative Jaisohn Center and the Asian American Coalition AAC organized a Community Town Hall Meeting to educate local organizations on the submission process partnering with the Montgomery County Recovery Office the Korean American Association of Greater Philadelphia KAAGP and the ARPA Technical Assistance Consortium to present this information to the AAPI community Throughout the application period the Jaisohn Center consistently supported other AAPI organiza tions in order to energize involve and embrace the greater Asian American community Jaisohn Center ranked in the top five of accepted proposals securing a 5 25 million grant to develop the Jaisohn Community Wellness Plaza This initiative aims to enhance the well being of Asian Americans and immigrant families in Montgomery County by offering diverse social health and civic services while serving as a center for connecting with major service providers 8 Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation
Continuation of COVID Vaccination In 2022 Jaisohn Medical Center remained steadfast in its vaccination clinics and COVID 19 relief initiatives Reaching a milestone of over 6 000 shots administered and 80 clinics since becoming a vaccine provider in 2021 the Jaisohn Center continues to provide vaccines booster shots education and safety information to all ages and ethnic communities In a collaborative effort we partnered with the Montgomery County Office of Public Health and the Independence Blue Cross Foundation to extend our outreach Together we distributed rapid test kits and N95 masks to underserved communities in Philadelphia ensuring accessibility to essential resources in the ongoing battle against the pandemic Philip Jaisohn National Creative Art Contest In 2022 we held the 3rd annual Philip Jaisohn National Creative Art Contest for 3rd 12th grade students The project criteria encouraged students to creatively reflect on aspects of Dr Philip Jaisohn s life and work alongside their cultural history and heritage The award ceremony was held at the Philip Jaisohn Memorial House with recipients attending both in person and virtually The submissions from the contest highlighted the interconnectedness of AAPI youth with their culture and predecessors Twenty six winners were recognized and 5 500 was awarded altogether throughout the elementary middle school and high school divisions Annual Report 2022 9
Youth and Parents Mental Health Workshops Following the COVID 19 outbreak the Jaisohn Center continued our commitment to addressing the under acknowledged issue of mental health in the AAPI community From May to August 2022 the Jaisohn Center and the Asian American Coalition AAC held a Mental Health Workshop Series for Youth and Parents This series was co sponsored by Stephanie Sun Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Governor s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific Affairs GACAPAA This three part series hosted by licensed Pediatric Behavioral Specialist Cliff Akiyama included a virtual workshop for youth titled Towards a Better Understanding of Mindfulness aimed at debunking mental health myths and exploring emotional well being The second session Understanding and Communication with Your Kids targeted both students and parents to educate on healthy communication The program concluded with the final workshop Stress Management equipping parents and students with tools for managing mental health and relationships New American Majority PA NAM PA We held the first New American Majority NAM PA Youth Racial Equity and Justice Internship in 2022 The Jaisohn Center collaborated with Esperanza a faithbased non profit serving Philadelphia s Latin American community and the office of Senator Art Haywood to recruit six African American Latino and Asian high school students for the four week program Through this internship the students had the opportunity to re ceive leadership training and civic education from community leaders as well as to build a network with the underserved communities of Philadelphia The closing ceremony was held on July 29 2022 at Jaisohn Medical Center s Philadelphia office where students presented their Capstone Project on voter participation and its effects on the community 10 Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation
Community Dialogue and Awareness Education With the rise of violence and hate crimes towards the AAPI community in recent years the Jaisohn Center is dedicated to spreading awareness and promoting education on AAPI and BIPOC struggles In 2022 we worked with several Asian American individuals to foster a community dialogue surrounding these issues In September the Jaisohn Center collaborated with lawyer turned filmmaker and director Joseph Juhn to host a screening of his film Chosen This film follows five Korean Americans who are running for political positions in the Congress These individuals have vastly different views which is meant to portray the diversity and diaspora found within the AAPI community Following the screening Juhn participated in a public dialogue further discussing these themes explored in the film Later in the month Korean American actor and director Daniel Dae Kim was featured in our Jaisohn Lecture Series Conversation with Daniel Dae Kim Kim is well known for his role in hit TV shows Hawaii Five 0 and Lost and has been recognized by the Korean American Coalition with his reception of the Vanguard Award In his dialogue Kim publicly spoke about the Asian American legacy and the struggles faced by the community in light of recent nationwide discrimination He highlighted the importance of leadership and self advocacy in such dire and uncertain times The Jaisohn Center partnered with these notable figures in the AAPI community to bring awareness and education to the community as well as to facilitate open and candid talks about the common issues we face Annual Report 2022 11
Jaisohn Fundraising Banquet On December 3 we hosted the 2022 Jaisohn Fundraising Banquet at Presidential Caterers located in Norristown PA The program included a keynote by Dr Val Arkoosh Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services congratulatory remarks by Amb Byung Hwa Chung New York Consul General of the Republic of Korea Pennsylvania Senator Art Haywood and Philadelphia Councilman David Oh and special performances by Alice Chung Ting Ting Wong and the Jaisohn Youth Academy Drum Team With the help of our supportive sponsors and nearly 300 participants at the banquet we raised a total of approximately 114 000 including a donation of 18 000 from Sunny Lee Park and Jin H Park Additionally we awarded Dr Wooyoung Lee former Jaisohn Board Chairman with the Philip Jaisohn Lifetime Service Award His family and friends generously donated 175 000 in his name which were utilized to establish the Wooyoung Lee Scholarship and Leadership fund Other News Philip Jaisohn Monument Upgrade Project In September 2022 the Philip Jaisohn Monument Upgrade Project began Situated in Rose Tree Park the Philip Jaisohn Monument serves as a tribute to Dr Philip Jaisohn who lived in Media PA for many years The monument stands as a testament to Dr Jaisohn s significant contributions to the Korean American community and his enduring impact on AAPI and American history This monumental initiative not only entails the restoration of the central statue but also envisions the transformation of the surrounding area into a more community friendly and engaging space Sponsored by the Jaisohn Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea the project aspires to create a revitalized and inspiring focal point that honors Dr Jaisohn s legacy and fosters a sense of community connections 12 Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation
Seeds from the East The Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation presented Seeds from the East The Korean Adoptee Portrait Project an art exhibition and healing project by artist A D Herzel also known as the Korean Adoptee Art Exhibition Displayed at the Philip Jaisohn Memorial House from April 30th to June 5th this exhibition shed light on the cultural and identity challenges faced by overseas Korean American adoptees PJMF sponsored the Philadelphia launch of the exhibition program hosting the opening reception and an artist talk on May 14th Community Development Throughout 2022 the Jaisohn Center collaborated with the Asian American Coalition AAC the Governor s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs GACAPAA and the Pennsylvania Health Access Network PHAN to champion voter participation and community development Together we kickstarted the My Community Votes campaign aiming to enhance civic awareness education and voter registration In October activities included a Voter Education and Registration Drive a booth at the Generations Senior Center Health Fair and a Voter Registration Workshop for seniors at the Jaisohn Wellness Center Beyond civic advocacy our efforts extended to informing the community about available services through the Community Services Conversation with Asian American Coalition This event educated individuals on resources in the community and provided a platform to share experiences covering topics such as senior services housing education mental health youth services drug and alcohol support public safety and victim s services Significant People Passing We regret to observe the passing of Dr John Hong on September 4 2022 at the age of 91 Dr Hong received his M D from the Severance Medical School at Yonsei University and his Masters of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh He served as the President of the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation from 2000 2002 Annual Report 2022 13
